Motor for 60 size GP 300S?
I am about to start building a Great Planes 300S 60-size kit. So far all the planes I have built have been 40-size with OS FX46's. I want to put a four stroke on this one and am leaning toward a Saito 100. But I have been very happy with my OS motors so I haven't ruled out one of the Surpass series. Cost is not a major factor in this decision. So what is the best motor for this plane- that will give it good vertical capability but also keep it light and relatively easy to manage?

Saito 100... It's lighter than the OS and perfect for the Extra 300.
Here is a build along I did when I built mine although I seem to have lost some of the pictures:

I have mine 99% done and was going to put my Saito 100 in it but the new muffler style won't fit in my cowl, .
Has anyone else installed a Saito 100 in theirs ??

My muffler on my 91 fits perfect inside the cowl. I added an extension out the bottom and is working fine, although I haven't flown it like this yet though.

Here is the picture of the new style muffler bwindrum sent me. I'd say try to find a 90 degree elbow and use that... I can't believe they went to a straight pipe off the engine. Looks heavy in that picture...
At least I know what to look for when I order my next Saito.

You guys are killing me. Now I have more questions than I started with!
The 91FX would have been my first choice for a 2-stroke motor on this plane (especially since it is lactually ighter than the 60FX!). But I really want a four-stroker, mainly because I have never tried one and there's got to be a first time!
My poll results clearly show the Saito 100 as the prefered of the 4-stroke options, but the muffler doesn't fit in the cowl? Does it extend outside of the cowl or does it interfere with it entirely? Can the motor be rotated 45 or 90 degrees to make it fit better? Are there any options for modifying the muffler or sourcing one that would fit better? Does the Saito 91 share this muffler problem? WreckRman2, how did you make the muffler fit?
bwindrum- there are lots of ways to post pictures to this forum. The trick is to resize them to get the number of pixels down so that they will fit OK, and then keep the resolution down when saving the resized copies that you plan to upload. I use ACDSEE to do this before uploading. Most photo viewing/editing software includes a resize option.

Build-n-flyer, the older Saito 91's have a different style muffler, the header has a bend to it which makes it a bit easier to fit in a cowl. I have one that I'm going to see how it fits in the GP Extra. I have one in my Goldberg Extra and it fits fine, but the cowl might be a touch bigger.
BTW, you'll love the Saito four strokes

I just finished mine and flew it this weekend. I have known people who have used .60 2 strokes and they flew sluggishly. I used a Super Tigre 90 on mine. I flies great and the balance was perfect. it defenetly goes verticle with authority. For the money this is a great engine.

I wouldn't let this muffler thing decide whether or not you get a 4 stroke. About 90% of all models require some cutting of the cowl for the muffler so don't let this be your focus.
On mine I started with a GMS76 w/ pitts muffler so it easily went out the bottom. I later swapped that for an OS91FS and the muffler easily went out that same hole. I don't think you'll have any problems routing the Saito 100 muffler out either.

I would like to speak for the non-3D pilots of this plane. I have an OS91fs in mine and the power is fine. It can do huge loops and vertical rolls. It just can't hover.
The stock OS 91 muffler does fit entirely inside the cowl. I'm using just a short length of aluminum tubing over the header pipe and it sounds great.
I really enjoy the GP Extra. The mailman delivered the 1/3 scale Extra 330 to my door yesterday.
