With all the fantastic Sig 4*'s out there, standard or modified. Thought I would start a thread on Ideas, modifications and potential to bash the humble Sig into something truly different.

One "idea" I had was to build a foam core or framed high aspect ratio wing under a streamlined 4* fuse & tailfeathers, fitted with your favourite fast engine.
A cheap fun pylon racer!!

Anyone else has any crazy ideas, please post them.

How about one made completley out of coroplast?

I remember a post somewhere on RCU about someone bashing a 4* into an ME109. That was cool.

The best bash I have is cutting that goofy canopy down to an open cockpit.

My all time favorite 4star mod has to be the one done by Damifino. It was actually a Venture 60 but it's really the same plane. Here's a couple of pics.

What is coroplast?

Plastic cardboard. Same stuff election signs and the signs at the local kwikee mart are made of. Light, durable, fuel proof, and available in a rainbow of colors.

Can buy coroplast at local plastic supply places as well. I just bought a 4x8 sheet of 2mil and 4 mil to build this Dogfighter...



Damifino's 4* build and covering job inspired me to rotate my engine and put on a cowling like this when I built my SSE:



Sheet the turtle deck as well. Really cleans up the lines IMO.

All right, you've got my attention. Any Plans? Did you build from the 4* plans??? What did it weigh in at? Lots of questions.

I had a "hard landing" with my 4*60 a few weeks back and am getting ready to build the replacement.

Here's my last one. The wing is clipped by one bay and has LE sheeting and cap strips. This made the wing much more rigid. The ailerons are slightly wider than stock. The turtle deck angle is modified and sheeted. This allowed the use of tail fairings. The engine is rotated on it's side and enclosed by a balsa cowl. The tail feathers are built from stick, slightly larger than stock, with a different shape. The canopy is also cut down for a better look. It's a great, stable flyer.

I'm in the process of my 4 * 40 mod build. I sheeted and glassed the wings. Clipped the wings one bay and added rounded tips. Added air retracts. Modified the rudder to be more like the one on the Venture. Built a glass cowl and am planning on an inverted 50SX. I'm covering the fuse in flite Skin. I'm also adding nav lights.

Your glass on the fuselage should fix one of the two weak areas of the 4*, Your retracts elimanate the other.

Hopefully, the modified vertical stab and rudder (I'll have to take a photo of the rudder) will help with the pitch coupling.

It'll be interesting to see how the effect of higher weight and lower drag will affect performance. I still have to refine the shape of the wheel well openings and decide on whether or not to add inner gear doors.

I just love the way these 4*'s have been modified into such different aircraft!

I did my 4*60 as an open-cockpit sportster with rounded lines to replace the square look of the original. The wingtips are built-up but could be done in foam more easily. I re-built the fin and made a completely new rudder out of 3/8 thick balsa plywood (i.e. 3 layers of 1/8 glued crossgrain). The nose was flared out with balsa beginning at the wing trailing edge. The cowl is fibreglass and I did it as a lay-up on foam.

One of these days I'll make some wheel pants for it too...

Power is a SuperTigre G-75 with a Bisson Pitts-style muffler.

I'm putting together a 4* 60 Arf right now and am doing the same thing with the windshield. How did you secure it?
Did you glue it on ? If so what kind of glue?

If you want to see a cool 4* bash look up gputt33's 4*120 AirTractor. Too cool.

I am building a 4*40 for electric. I have replaced all the plywood except the firewall with balsa. Stick built the tail using a blown up P40 3-view, am adding round wingtips and wider ailerons to get an eliptical-ish trailing edge profile. Not sure about the covering scheme yet, some combination of four star decal - cap 10 - early army something-or-other. I willl post pics as she comes together.
