Was looking at my current inventory of planes and I realized I don't have a single plane that flies less 50mph. I fly a holly smoke, diamond dust, and a sig king Kobra. I want to slow down. I Know I want to bulid a cub I remeber flying in one when I was about 8. Just don't know which one, looking at Great Planes 60-90 size or Balsa USA 1/4 cub. Which is a better kit. This would be my first scale kit.

I have built and flown the Great Planes 40 Cub, Goldberg Cub and I am now flying a Sig 1/4 Clipped Wing Cub(see my Avatar).
The Sig is by far more scale than the Great Planes Cubs, the BUSA Cub is supposed to be a nice Cub also. Both the Sig and the BUSA are builder kits. You can do a search here and find my Cub thread, it covers the complete build with alot of pics. The Sig Cub is an excellent flying plane.

I built the clipped wing version of the Great Planes .60 cub. The instructions give you information on adding scale details. The wing span is 83 inches. I am powering the plane with a Saito .91 4 stroke. Sounds great on a slow fly by. See attached pictures.

I have a .65 Saito on mine; it will fly fine with a .56, but the bigger engine allows you to use a scale prop (14 inch at 1/5 scale = 70 inches at full scale, and the full scale uses a 72 inch prop). I think the new .62 Saito would be perfect. It's the same physical size as the .56, which means it would fit entirely within the cowl if mounted inverted. The .65 is bigger, and the valve covers just barely stick out. I also have a Hangar 9 80 inch Cub (essentailly the same scale), and I have a .72 Saito on it. The other advantage of the slightly larger (overpowered) engine is that you can fly at lower rpms and the sound is great. Either way, with any 4-stroke o this plane, you might have to recess the firewall a bit, to maintain the correct prop hub location. It's an easy mod.
Mine is full span, since I wanted to make it a military version. The neat thing about the 1/5 Sig kit is that the plans include layouts for full span or clipped wings, you can build it either way. I'd recommend the .72 if you clip the wings, just so you can take advantage of the greater aerobatic performance.

Nothing against Cubs. I've had a couple of Cubs myself. But I'm trying to promote diversity. Imagine an A&A Champ, or a Tripacer. I think Ikon make a big one. Just a thought.

WOW Ikon has some great kits! Have you ever put one of their kits together? They kit two of my favorite planes a Pilatus Porter and a Maule

Tim--Nice looking Cub--I have the same one, clipped, and use an OS 70 for power which flies it just fine. Had an OS 91 on for a while, but needed it for a different plane. I am currently building a Sig 1/4 scale and will use a Saito 1.80. That's a lot more than needed, but I have the engine and it fits inside the cowl. Cub Nut has a great build thread for the Sig cub if any one is interested.

Greg,
Thanks, I am fortunate to have an airplane museum close by that has a Cub in its inventory.
I was able to take lots of pictures of it. This was my second build, my first was a Kadet Senior. I am currently building a Top Flite Cessna 182. I have been taking pictures of the build progress, but have not posted any of them yet. I am thinking of building another Cub and covering it with fabric when I'm finished with the Cessna.[8D]
