I was looking for a winter project. I have built four kits. I was wondering if the Midwest Super Stearman would be a good first kit for a biplane. Any feedback would be appriciated. Thanks flyer-2

i bought on ready to fly.. i got plans book with it.. seems to be nice kit..
takes a 150 to fly it.. 90 is to small..

It's a fairly involved build - not crazy, but maybe more than u want to tackle on a 1st bipe.

I wud suggest a Sig Hog Bipe (mine attached) if you want a easy yet satisfying project, or the Goldberg Ultimate for an all-out aerobatic machine that's still not too hard to build. The hog flies great w/ anything between a 60 2-stroke to a 91 4-stroke.

I have a Midwest Stearman that I built from a kit. Whilst it's been a few years since I built it (and I still have it!) I don't recall that there was anything particularly complex about the build.

I have a Magnum 120 FS in mine which flys it OK.

If you have a little building experience under your belt you shouldn't have too many problems. The kit comes with a good plan and a comprehensive set of instructions.

I have admired this plane for a long time and had it in my Tower shopping cart more than once but I have always backed out before hitting the submit button.
There are a lot of threads about this plane, do an advanced search of all forums using Midwest and Super and Stearman as the search term, limit the search to topics only.

A lot of negative words have been written about this plane as well as some positive ones.
Opinions about the flying capabilities vary from it being a dog, to "very scale like", to great flying very aerobatic, so there is no way to know what the truth is.

Much has been written in complaint about the lead required on the nose to balance the plane, it is a scale plane that has a very short nose and it will require a significant chunk of lead up front to balance it, if this is going to bother you I would recommend against this kit.

And finally I agree with LuvBipes that the Sig Hog Bipe is a very good first bipe project that builds and flies wonderfully, but that is not what you asked about.

I have built the MW Stearman and it is a pleasure to fly-I powered mine with a Zenoah G-23 and have not real balance issues-it flies scale like and does nice slow, scale like aerobatics
