Thanks for the help guys.
JCB,
In case you haven't heard this before, I have a tip for you for covering your wing. After you cut your template for your pattern, lay two pieces of covering on top of each other, one facing up and one facing down. Then put your template on top of them and cut them both at the same time. Instant mirror image!. Be sure to use a new #11 blade to do this.
Good luck with finishing up your plane. Can't wait to see the final results!!

Well here it is in "ARF" condition. All that is left to do it hinge all the control surfaces, install radio gear, and do the cockpit...next post will hopefully be a flight report!
Mike, you up for another maiden?
hrrcflyer - thanks for the covering tips, they worked like a charm!!

I've tapped many wingbolts into wood. As long as you are using nylon bolts its fine. the bold will sheer before the wood gives out. just Tap, then soak with thin CA, then run the tap though again.

Of course, if you want me to fly it I'll do that too - who wouldn't?!

Big Ugly - you ask, you get!
Mike, i plan of having it ready to fly for the toys-for-tots fun fly on 12/9. I am now just waiting on some radio gear that i ordered so it should be done by then. I'll let you fly it if you want...
Also, I just looked at the first date i took a picture of this build and it was 9/18/2007 (which means i probably started building a few days before that). Not too bad, about 2.5 months start to almost-finish. For some reason i thought i have been building this thing for four months!!

JCB,
Awesome looking airplane!![sm=thumbup.gif] I know it will fly as good as it looks, but I'm patiently waiting for a flight report.

My brother didn't like the Orange/ White scheme, I love it. I'm planning on splitting the fuse, bottom white, top orange, with a black tracer between the two. The wongs will be about the same, with about 2 inches of the LE orange, and have it extend toward the back as the wing gets near the fuse. The tail will be the same as the wing, but I haven't decided on the vertical stabilizer, but it will be similar.

I haven't flown the maiden yet - the weather was pretty bad this past sunday. The winds were howlin'!! Hopefully the weather will hold out for this weekend and i'll be able to get it in the air.

FLIGHT REPORT!!!
Well...reluctantly (due to nerves) I did the maiden flight of my US 40 this morning. I got to the field rechecked everything and had the motor tuned up. Fired it up again and taxied out. Got it on the runway and rolled into the throttle. Let me just say those nerves went away as soon as the plane lifted off of the runway!! I surprised myself with this one in that it needed hardly any trim at all.
This plane flew like a dream! I was very pleased with it and am REALLY looking forward to getting it back to the field next weekend.
The only lame thing was that I only got one flight on it, reason being, I LEFT MY FUEL AT HOME [sm=bananahead.gif]!!! I was lucky enough to bum a tank off of one of my flying buddies. He told me to fly again, but I felt bad using his fuel - oh well. I only flew it for a short period of time, but was able to do a few rolls and a bit of inverted flight. THIS PLANE FLIES LIKE IT'S ON RAILS!! I am very happy I chose to build this plane!
I highly recommend this plane and it more than lives up to hype that MinnFlyer and RCKEN have been dishing out. (Thanks for talking me into this one guys!!)
Thanks for the help Mike (Submikester) and for being the official nerve-soother!
Setup:
US40
All Ultracoat covering
YS 63 (highly recommended for this plane!!!)
12oz Dubro Fuel Tank
Hitec 475's all around
Hitec 75 on the retracts
5 cell 1400mah battery
3DX Hobbies retracts (good job on the design MinnFlyer, these things are GREAT!!)
CG exactly at 4" (won't be changing this)

JCB,
Wooo Hooo!!
Outstanding flight report! You've got me thinking about something. I have a slightly used YS53 currently in my Tower Kaos that I use Powermaster 20/20 in. Do you think it would fly a US40 if I follow some of Minnflyers' "lite"ning tricks? If so, I may have to visit my LHS after the holidays and pick up the kit that's sitting on the shelf.. What do you think?
Happy Holidays
PS
Don't feel too bad about leaving your fuel at home. I'm not going to tell you how many times I've left my transmitter at home..[:@]

RE: Ultra Sport 60 Anyone up for a build thread. Chime in
let's just say my YS63 has "plenty of power" - i made most of the maiden flight at less than half throttle and the thing was scootin'! I'm sure that a slightly less powerful motor will be more than sufficient for this plane. I built the plane according to the plans w/o any lightening tricks and the weight came about to about 4lbs 13oz dry (which is less than what GP says, what a miracle!!)
When i was breaking in the motor, i tied the plane to the trailer hitch receiver for my truck (not attached to my truck) and this plane would drag it through the grass at 3/4 throttle. My 91 four stroke hasn't ever done that!!

Thanks JCB,
You gotta love those YS's. This is why I have a YS91 sitting on a shelf waiting for me to get the time to build one of my US60 kits.[&:]
