Default First time builder with a question or three

I have the kadet Sr. wing halves frames and pined to a wall so they don’t warp.

I laid the fuselage prints out and ironed the creases out. Is this proper?

I started studying (sorry) the plans and noticed that some of the longerons are marked ¼ x1/4 spruce, some are labeled ¼ x ¼ balsa and others are not labeled. Do I assume that the ones not labeled are balsa?

My last question for tonight is, when forming the bottom longeron front do I let the balsa dry before I glue it

pinned is good.....to the WALL??? or to a piece of wall board?

yes, then clear cover them so's you don't glue stuff to them

I started studding the plans and noticed that some of the longerons are marked ¼ x1/4 spruce, some are labeled ¼ x ¼ balsa and others are not labeled. Do I assume that the ones not labeled are balsa?

studding=? framing?
front to back pieces are probably spruce, vertical and cross-wise pieces are probably balsa. the not labled ones are probably assumed to be the same as similar ones that are marked on the plans. make sure you're making a left and a right side....don't ask why I say that.

Without having the plans.....just squinting at yours...

the bottom, top [and under wing] , and middle [the short one under the windows] longerons are probably spruce, and all of the verticals and diagonals are balsa.

Usually, the plans will use a different fill patteren to distinguish between woods. Kind of represents the grain of the wood. Usually. Compare the fill pattern on the one labled balsa and also on the one labled spruce. Then look at the fill on the unknowns. It should match one or the othrer. Look at the fill on the ruddre area. The balsa has wavy lines and dots, the spruce longer wavy lines. Ply is usually loops, like the cabin sides. Different shading is also used to identify the wood.

Good work so far.

like I said, I don't have the plans......LiveWire might be right,

but I would think the left pictured ones [same one , actually] would be spruce, while
on the right: the long one towards the wing may be spruce, the other, balsa.

yes, check the plans for a pattern , good job, campgems.

If I was at home right now, I could easily answer your questions, but I'm at work and won't be home until Wednesday. I've built two of these, and have a third kit at home now. I think if you read the directions/manual closely while looking at the plans, the pieces you're asking about should be identified. If memory serves me right though, everything in the area of the cabin uses spruce vertical and horizontal parts, and everything aft of the cabin is balsa (the lower longeron has a splice just aft of the cabin where the balsa and spruce meet).

Guys thanks for the help. I again am guilty of trying to over complicate the problem. I was under the same assumption that the fill on the plan should be different (note photo at the scarf joint) this is part of what started the panic.

This morning I had the brilliant but simple idea to inventory the ¼ x1/4 spruce stock and compare it to the kit parts list. Low and behold there in black and white under spruce sticks.

2-1/4”x1/4”x 22”; fuselage frame top
3-1/4”x1/4”x36”: cabin top stringers, fuselage frame bottom
4-1/4”x1/4”x7”; cabin doublers
