RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
Dan , I should of had this done , lol Had a few video projects , that's was promised to have done and a Honey-do list . Really like your covering scheme . I was going to do something very close to that myself but it keeps changing We`ll see in the next few days
I was dragging my feet about the Magnum. Really bothered me with the way it was running . Now that has been repaired , the build can move on .
Installed the throttle servo and flex cable. Generally, I use a nylon connector at the carb, but I`m running DX7 and not concerned about it. The flex cables work great, the action is really smooth . reinforced the stringer where the cable comes thru.
Assembled the tank and realized I need to build some kind of tank floor. Duh![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
Also forgot to add a piece of 1/8 in. ply in the tail , for the Sullivan tail wheel blind bolts , but was able to glue it in place , would of been a lot easier when I had better access
Headed to the shop to fire the wood stove up now . Hope to finish up the odds and ends, and final sanding today.

RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
Thanks for the reminder about putting the throttle linkage in, I like to get all that squared away before covering and I completely forgot about that. I did remember to get my fuel tank installation done though- I did all that before sheeting the upper fuselage so that I could get at it from the top. I ended up cutting away the bottoms of the stringers so that my tank could be as high as possible. The Sullivan tailwheel is a good idea too, I have been planing to use the kit setup but maybe I'll put a piece of ply back there to take the Sullivan unit down the road if the need arises.

Dan , my .4* .40 had the same stock tail-wheel set up . I flew the plane alot, many many touch n gos and landings and it finally failed. I perfer to have the tailwheel mount atached to the fuse .

RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
That's funny, I flew a 4 Star 40 for about 5 years with a Sullivan tailwheel on it and by the time it died that was the only piece worth salvaging. Might as well dig it out and put it on the Slowpoke.

Cut out the tank floor by using the bottom of the fuze as a pattern. . Little shaping and sanding and it fit pretty good. Used 1/2 tri-stock at the fuse sides and CA+. Also allowed for 1/4 in. dense foam , for the tank to set on .

Looking good! I spent the entire afternoon covering my wing, got it done except for the ailerons but they'll be easy. Tell me honestly what you think, I haven't decided if I'm crazy about it or not.

Started covering, This is my weakest point when it comes to building. Right now I`m winging it , and putting the scheme together as I go. I cut all the checker squares by hand, Whew ! Give me an air brush any day .
Is there anybody out there ?

RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
That looks great! Did you do the purple on the turtledeck with one piece of covering or two? Your checkers look great too, I did a flowing checkerboard pattern on a Mustang racer once where I cut each piece by hand, it's a lot of work!

Awsome! It really looks great!
I wish others would send in photos of their covering schemes but it would interfere with the build thread. You have done a superb job with the building, covering and this thread in general.
I have truely been enjoying it. Ron

Thanks Ron , it really helps to know others are enjoying the build. .
Lets face it, The SlowPoke is an old school build , many have already , been there , done that , But I would`nt trade a minute of it ,for an ARF.
And the maiden will be on video , with , yours truly on the sticks , but thats a few months away.

RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
Mr. Moondoggie, I too am happy you didn't drop your build thread, I'm not "building" anything but "assembling" a Thunder Tiger Lazy Tiger Cub. I asked some questions on 1 or 2 of these forums about any experiance anyone could give about this model and got squat for response. Point being, you've done an excellent job of explaining the "building" concept which most rc'ers today know nothing about. I've been flying rc or full scale in some form or capacity since about 1958, and I'm glad someone actually builds and advertises it (your friends in the discussion certainly added value as well). Looking forward to your maiden flight!!! CAVU

You can't go wrong with checkerboard and the scallops are very appropriate for the plane. Looks good to me.

Dan , I used checkers on my LT40 . Looked cool , but they were so small ,they just faded to grey in a few feet. So , when I built my 4* .60 I used 8 inch, dark blue and white squares, Big improvement over the 1 inch. I`ll post a pic as soon as I get back out to the shop.
D.L.R. , thanks so much for the compliments . The nice thing about doing a build thread , is meeting others and sharing ideas . And the feed back helps me to remember to take pics, lol . I get so wrapped up in the build I forget some times.
ChuckW , you have an excellent eye for color . lol! The purple metallic is kind of spendy , but sure looks cool. I`m leaning towards some old school flames, heck , if I can take the time to cut a 100 one inch squares , flames should be a cinch.
Flytolow , Retracts ! cool ! Thanks for taking the time to post the pics . Your tail feathers came out nice.
Well I need a few things , like pin striping tape , so a trip to the cities, is on my to do list today . Not to long ago , you could walk into any auto parts store and buy all kinds of striping tape , you could even buy it at Walmart . Wife wants to go to Joanne Fabrics , may I can find some goodies there .

RE: SlowPoke Build , Again!
Hey everyone, I've just been enjoying reading this thread. Brings back some memories. Not too long ago I was part of a thread like this here. I still have & love to fly my slowpoke. I ought to snap a current photo of it and post it here. Mine has an evolution 46 out of an alpha trainer in it with a Tower muffler. Runs perfect all the time. Pilot is Capt'n Dan. I tied a scarf around his neck and looks so cool when taxiing out or low flyby. Flies great, needed a little nose weight even though I tried to build it light in the back.
I found my old post with a photo if it will work.

I'm currently building another vintage plane...a Sig Kavalier
anyway....enjoying the thread.
Ken
PS I think the 4 stroke is way cooler for this plane than a 2stroke

KenVW , I read that thread before I started mine. Good read, Lot of others were building thm at the same time .
I been steadyly working on the covering. Takes me forever , Mounted the tailfeathers like you would an ARFs , covered them first , then cut the covering back for epoxy. The instructions call for mounting the stab before covering, but I prefer tocover everything, then mount.
Started on the wing , couple more hours and it should be done.
