The local hobby store had a sale on this Goldberg Protege while i hate nose wheel aircraft the price was right and i've been aching to try a build. While most would think im in over my head I'm actually pretty handy so, so far the build is going well. The problem is I would really like to make this a tail wheel bird if I can. I'm really more curious on the movement of the gear box and how difficult of a task this is.

Some photos would help. Just guessing from the type of plane this is, but I assume there is a block type structure in the fuse bottom with holes for the wire gear. They then are strapped to the bottom in groves. You would want to move this structure forward so that your axles are inline with or just in front of the wing LE. there is probably a former there at the wing LE inside the fuse. You could probably place the LG block Just in front of it and add a Sullivan tail wheel. You may need to beef up the rudder depending on how it is built, but the Sullivan is very easy on the rudder by design. This is all just a guess as I have not built this plane. Post some photos of the plans in these areas and I bet we can figure it out.
