Default Bolt on wing ideas

I am trying to collect as many ideas for converting a high wing model to a bolt on wing as I can! Some models in question are:

1. Senior Telemaster (wing already built and use rubber bands)
2. SIG LT-25 or LT-40 wing built

However, if you have any ideas for generic setups, I would really appreciate it. Need to know how to handle this for other airplanes.

Thanks...

Add a ply "L" block onto the bottom of the wing. Simply cut a slot large enough to work through in the LE bottom of the wing and epoxy two pieces of L shaped ply to either side of the center rib, with an appropriate width (equal to rib) spacer between. Then either modify existing structure of fuse at forward wing mount to a female receiver of the L, or build one if no structure exists. Add wing bolts and blind nuts to the rear.

Rubber bands are much easier, and just as effective.

This bolt on mod will work for just about any high wing KIT build. I would not recommend it for an ARF without cutting into the wing bay for added reinforcements. In the photos you will see the Sig LT 25. Line up the wing with the tail I use a string with some tape looped around it so it slides on the string. Measure the outer wing tips to the stab tips with the string use the tape as a guide once centered make light marks on wing and fuse so you can realign with later. You will need to glue a piece of 1/8 ply behind the balsa bulkhead (the one with the hole in the PIC below). Make sure you have installed some balsa blocks into the leading edge wing bay to support the dowel. I just use the dowel that come with the kit for the rubber band mounts in the wing it works just great. Drill a 1/4" hole in the center of the wing at the LE. Sharpen the dowel install it in wing NO GLUE just yet sharp point out. Now that you have the wing marked out and centered as per the instructions above set the wing on the fuse aline it with the marks you made and push making a mark in the forward bulkhead, simply drill this mark out to accept the dowel NOT LOOSE. You may now glue the dowel into the wing dull the point down. With Elmers type wood glue push it way back into the wing around 2 inches and keep LE end short no more than a ½” is needed to enter the bulkhead. For the trailing edge mounting I like to use some good hardwood here or ½ in ply make some blocks 1 1/4"x1/2". Glue the blocks to the fuse sides with 30 min epoxy make sure the aileron torque rods don’t hit the blocks, I round the outer corners up a bit to prevent this. Glue some very thin sheet ply to the rear wing bolt attachment area on the top of the wing for added strength. You can see this in the pics just under the wing covering. Make a template showing the center of the blocks with some paper and a tape hinge (see pic). Realign the wing on the fuse with the marks and flip the tape hinged paper template back on top of the wing drill through the template, wing and into the center of the blocks with a small drill bit. Keep the drill at a 90 degree angel to the surface of the wing (see pic). Remove the wing and tap the blocks with a 1/4 tap for wing bolts or any size you wish, you are done enjoy.

StickTickler:

What a great series of photos! This really shows how it's put together.

How is the dowel secured into the leading edge? Does it go all the way back to the spar area and tie in, or is it boxed in somehow with the center ribs?

Great post!

Some scrap blocks of balsa are cut to fit about 2" back into the wing and glued to the center rib to stiffen the rib on both the right and left panel as you build the wing. Now when you drill the hole for the dowel in the center of the wing the dowel will not move around at all as the entire aera is solid balsa. Just remember to use Elmers type wood glue on the dowel as CA glues will harden to fast and the dowel will not make it all the way down inside the drilled hole.
