Hammerd,

Iron Eagel put me on to your build... if you don't mind some plagerism, there are a lot of ideas here that I would not mind stealing for my 1/6 Scale Blackburn Monoplane. And your sequence for making the LG is another idea that I would like to borrow....

Regarding your cowl, have you seen any coffee pots that are about 1/6 scale for my Blackburn???

Sweet! [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] The Aerodrome models are clearly the best small scale kits available. If I were into electric I'd be all over these!

Hi Hammerd, I've been following along quietly. My guess is you've other hobbies, like military modelling? Figurine painting? Nice work. i'm waiting to see the covering and how you go about the weathering and detailing. I know its going to fly well

Hi hammerd

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat model. I am still following along. Just one question. On your previous model (Ugly stick) what was the thickness of the wood on the fuselarge sides. and what kinda wood was it. sorry but im a newbie at modeling.

Thx Ramon

Bob. Steal away. That's what I did.
deothoric. Never done any figure painting, just building models of all sorts since I was a small kid, and I've done quite a bit of graphic artwork for flight sims. The weathering is something I'm looking forward to tackling.
Ramon. The fuse sides were 1/4" balsa with, if I remember right, 1/16" ply doublers up front.
An update. I finally got to covering and am now working on the faux rib stitching.

Fuse covered:

Cable exits and area forward of stab built up to meet stab like full size. Plans didn't show this, but it looked unfinished otherwise.

Covering the wings with polyspan:

Rib stitching. I used a piece of bending MDF, 1/4" and laminated the outside so the dope wouldn't stick.

Taped down polyspan, then stretched the string across it using the grooves as a guide. Then I applied a few coats of dope. Cut strips with knife:

Stitching applied and tape over it.

Everything is covered now. Ribstitching and edge taping done also. I'll spray a couple of coats of clear nitrate dope and be ready for color.
I'm going to use latex for the colors.

Fellas, is it OK to hate this guy??? I'd never want to admit to being jealous or anything....

Like Paul said, it's Art. I'm just learning and admiring... Thanks for putting this up on the web for all of us to enjoy.

I too am in awe at how well this looks. I am stationed in Pensacola and at the Museum of Naval Aviation on base, there are actual planes that look like this.....Hammerd, Your work IS museum quality. About how many hours do you have at this point? Every one of them has been well worth the effort!!! Sweet job! Keep it up... Wish we could see some video of it's first (maybe not FIRST, but once it's all trimmed and flying as good as it looks) flights.

Thank you for the compliments.[sm=red_smile.gif]
Not quite museum quality, I'm only looking for stand-off scale with a reasonable flying weight. I want a nice flying plane.
I haven't tracked the hours I have in to it. Probably a good thing too.
Cutting and fitting the litho plate. First time for me, using this stuff, but it was pretty easy.
I'm going to leave the final detailing (weathering, flying wires, and other such non essential items) till after a few test flights. Hopefully I'll get the wings attached, radio gear in, and controls rigged for a maiden flight this weekend.

It's officially an airplane now. She's got wings.
Radio in and controls rigged. Should be good to go for a maiden flight this weekend.
I'll get some better shots then.

ESC should get plenty of air:

Elevator servo:

Anyone know why the motor would put out a little screech when it first spins up? Just for a split second. Normal? At first I thought it was rubbing the dummy motor, but it's not.
Also, it's an outrunner, and the housing moves forward just a bit when juice is applied. Is that normal?

As far as the case moving a bit that is normal. The noise however is not something I have encountered, it may be a bad bearing. I had a skill saw that used to do the same thing, it ran for ten years making a noise when it was first fired up. I killed it cutting oak one day, got hot enough to short out the motor (I should have changed the blade).
If the motor seems to run ok and does not seem to slow down after it is run a bit, I would not sweat it.

Your build is a work of art!
Good luck with the flight testing, I am willing to bet it will fly as good as it looks!

edit to add:

Amazing Build! [sm=thumbup.gif]

I watch the local electric guys and hear the same thing. (screeching on power up)

No first hand experience, but it seems like it does happen. (not saying that it's "good" however)

An article that talks about speed control sync, motor timing etc. that might be related is here - [link]http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=843745[/link]

Good luck on the maiden. Looking forward to the report and photo's

hammered,
Not much to worry about with the screeching, happens sometimes. If it realy bothers you when starting up you can change to a Phoenix speed controller with the Castle link and adjust it for low timing. I doubt the Thunderbird version has that adjustment.
I have a couple of planes with TB controllers and they do the same thing, I just advance the throttle past the screech and fly just fine.

cooper998

Oh yeah, great build. You have inspired me to build my fleet. I have the Aerodrome kit as well as all three BalsaUSA versions, 1/6, 1/4, and 1/3 scale version. Yes I do like Pups!
