Which engine should I use in my Sig 1/6 scale full span Cub?
Here are my candidates: Magnum .30, O.S. .30, Saito .40 (used),
Magnum .52 four srokes.

I Have a scratch built super cub at 1/6 scale and it has always had an OS 40 two stroke. Now 18 years old with over 500 flights...Have just repowered with an OS 46 [as I could not buy a new 40] and put on floats..the 46 makes it take off just as the full size super does ,even on half throttle. cheers

I would go for the Magnum .52 4 stroke. I have the G.P. cub and it's powered with the O.S. 52 which IMO is about right. Also, consider scale cubs beg for the 4 stroke engine.

I built this kit (clipped wing version) many years ago and powered it with a K&B 40, 10X6 prop. It was too much power. Went to a 10X4 prop and it was good. A friend of mine built the full span version, however he had no engine or radio, asked me to fly it for him. It flew well on a well used OS 30 2 stroke. The kit builds light and does not need much power. A Magnum 52 4 stroke would be over kill, but if that's all you have, prop it down and avoid full power. It is, after all, a Cub!

My LHS has a magnum .30 in stock, one of my club mates wants to sell me his
Saito .40 for a fair price. Looks like a toss-up between those two. It's hard for
me to grasp a 71" model flying on such small engines, but these two are in the
recomended range. I went to my back issues and re-read the review on the
1/5 scale Sig cub. They powered it with an O.S. .52 and it flew perfectly. 85"
model flying on a .52!

Skyraider,
If I had the same two engines to choose from. I'd pick the Saito 40 EVERY time. I'm probably going to get blasted for saying this, but IMHO even a used Saito is better than a new Magnum!![>:].
Good luck with your Cub. Keep us posted on your maiden flight!!
