Where Have All The Kits Gone ?

Kit cutters are out there and if you can put together the drawings for the parts to cut, they will cut them for you, you just have to supply the sticks and sheets and hardware that you normally would get in a normal kit. On the plus side, you get the hardware you want instead of what comes in the box, which some of it is useless.

In a way I agree. The old tried and true method of a modellers knife and hand cutting out parts works just as well. It is old school, but after completing the model, there is no difference in its appearance except for the convenience of laser cutting at greater expense. It is not that I don't appreciate laser cutting. By the time I went through all that trouble, could already have a kit made up by hand and onto assembly.

I am of the same mind and the money I didn't spend helps pay for more balsa, laser cutting ain't cheap! but I am!

True, I have $900 invested in the B-25 and P-61 kits. That is just the wood and cutting. The hard part is knowing how much and of what you need to buy in wood, so to make it easy I just bought the ready made kits. I also am not much of a hand cutter, don't have the patience to make it perfect. Once I have these two out of the way though I plan to try my hand at a complete scratch of something, maybe a giant scale Corsair.

I did cut my own wing ribs on two projects both had tapered wings so you can only cut two at a time and then sand to get matched pairs. When you do that with 19 pair of wing ribs it gets a little time consuming. If you look at my avatar that airplane for a 1/5th scale model has a 84.5" wingspan, root rib is 17.75" long and the tip rib is 4.75" long the wing has 3/8" washout at the tip. The leading edge is tapered in height and length to severe angle as well. I guess if I wanted easy I wouldn't build! The first (vertical picture) is the main spar leaning against and 6'8" interior door frame as reference, you can see a R-1 and R-15 comparison in the third photo.

Scratch building kits,
Guy's i agree & i have been a scratch builder for a long time . I am 87 and still building.
Currently building a dynaflite super decathlon.
Worst kit /plans/construction book i have ever seen. I had to scratch redesign and make new parts. I am at the fusealage now.
Wish i just pulled out one of my many plans & scrath built it.
Sig still has some good balsa & they have allways sent me the wood i asked for. Keep em flying' trainermaster 80 frankie

I"m sure some of you built Comet or Guillow kits that used print wood. I used double edged razor blades from my dad, broken in half to cut them out. When I went for my security clearance fingerprints many years later, they asked me how I got all the scars on my fingers

I have to give a HUGE shout out to National Balsa. Great customer service. I bought a 101" Ziroli B-25 kit from them at the Toledo show and just got around to opening it to build on Sunday and discovered that 4 of the 6 12 X 48 laser cut plywood sheets were badly warped, so I emailed them Sunday night with pictures of the warped sheets and pieces, many of which are critical components to the build and must be straight. They replied early on Monday, and said they will replace the parts, I asked if they could cut the W5 & W7 out of 6 ply and I would pay the difference, but they replied back and said they will go ahead and cut thme for me at no extra charge.
Well, that was great to start, however, what I did not expect, and this is where I really need to give them a big shout out, I got them TODAY! I am shocked to say the least, not only did they replace the bad sheets, they did it in 3 days!!!!! Just like SIG, Great customer service, and highly recommend them, the cuts are great, the wood exceptional and the customer service tops!

Flyerin oac from reading all of your previous post i think you are smart enough to figure out a fix.hang in thar!
Where did you buy those little snap ring clips you show in your previous post attachment? I have need for some but have no success in locating them. Would be ideal to hold my wing struts on. Frankie trainermaster80

Now you know where I found them. I checked and these guys ( https://www.fastenal.com/home ) have them starting at 0.042 diameter they call them Hitch Pin Clips. You may have to buy a hat full to make a mininum order but they have them. The size I am using fit in about a No. 56 or 57 hole.
