Default 1/4 servos or not ?

Hello to all, Im in the process of finishing up my Balsa Usa 1/4 scale cub , I was wondering if 1/4 scale servos should be used on the elevator/rudder... Any opinions are as always appreciated. Thanks Carl

That's a neat kit. It's on my short list to build after a few other projects.

A large percentage of the modestly higher end standard sized servos have more power than those old 1/4 scale servos do. Save the weight and not use them. There's a truck load of $35 dollar servos available now I would put in there first. Look for something comparable to the Hitec 645's or Futaba S3305's in speed and torque. Tower Hobbies has some Hobbico and Self Branded servo's that look promising also. I just ordered a set for my next project to try them out.

Someone will chime in and tell you to get hundred dollar digital servos. I'd rather use that money towards more kits or the mortgage than waste it there. I also use lots Futaba S3010's on my profile planes with 5 cell packs. They are cheap at $25 and work great and I have never stripped one. Only problem is after lots of flights, they start to get sloppy. But that is on a 60 size profile with the rudder and ailerons bouncing off the runway time after time. I'd imagine they'd hold up great on a gentle flying cub.

Certainly a good 80 to 90 oz-in torque servo for the rudder. Or at least I certainly would.

I just loaded up my 27% Ultimate with Futaba S3152 all around (69 oz-in), but that uses two for the rudder.

Doesn't BUSA give a recommendation in the plans/instructions? Give them a call or e-mail.

Hey Carl,

I am also just finishing up a BUSA 1/4 Cub. I second Seanucd's reccomendation for Futaba 3010's. I use them in several models. The 600 series Hitec's are also good options. I put these std size high torque servos as an added margin of safety and reliability. You don't need the extreme power of 1/4 scale servos in this cub, it is large, but it is not an acrobatic monster. You just don't need 120-150 oz/in of torque or the added $$$. The torque from the 3010 is 72 at 4.8 volts and 90 at 6.0. The elevator and rudder are quite large, and it will take a little bit more power, more than a standard servo can provide to move them under a load. So go with stronger servos than std.(40-44 oz/in).

Mine is an older kit. I bought it years ago and just never built it. So unless they changed it, the book reccomends at least 60-80 oz/in on all surfaces. I would believe the ailerons could go a bit lighter, but remember, the 20-30$ difference now will make a safer and better flying model later.

Good Flying, Will

P.S. They just dropped the price on the 3010's at tower, to 20 $. I saw that when looking up numbers for this post. Normally they run 26 bucks.

My Sig 1/4 scale clipped wing Cub has been flying around with 50oz servos on everything except rudder since 2001 - no problems.

On rudder I use a 70 oz servo and the darn thing with go over the top in knife edge like nobody's business.

That said, I've recently used the Futaba 3305 and 3010 to good effect and would probably use them if I were to do the Cub all over again.

I second the opinion that this plane doesn't need high-end servos.

The plane just doesn't require a lot of torque so a lot of the analog servos will work just fine. I do like digital but even then, something like the HT 5475 is a good choice for under $35.00. Go look at some of the places like Servo City and see if anything is on sale, sometimes you can really find some good deals and I really like cheap!!

No problem Carl, I am using 21st century fabric covering. It isn't as easy as monocote, but looks good. At the seams is is also harder to get it to stick to itself. I had to use hairspray to get it to stick well. It took a small roll to do the tail, and the large roll to do the wings and most of the fuselage. I don't think I have enough to finish the rest of the fuse, but I will try. I am setting in the windows now, and will be getting a small roll of black fabric covering to do the lightning bolt and the numbers on the plane. What pictures do you need?

Will
