Default TF- DC-3

Just got the kit yesterday, so far have not done anything with it, other than take a quick look at the box. Would like anyone's thoughts or tips on the build. I am interested in doing something different with the model, maybe CDN Coast Guard colors - or many go TransCanada Airlines (Air Canada).

Anyone done one of these up in something unusual, I would love to see it, as well would love to know anyone who does custom graphics, ext

Looking forward to getting the project on the go!

Put it on amphib floats with retractable gear in the floats. There was one full-scale DC-3 that was on a set of floats like this. Gotta be the most unique full scale DC-3 ever. Google it.

Here is a build thread that a good friend on mine did for our clubs project page. I got to see it fly on it's maiden flight and wow was I impressed. Good Luck, Dave

I am building 2 of the zirolli DC3's, and one will be on floats as per XC-47C. note that was not a true amphibian, as the wheels were strictly for crawling out of the water, not for landings or takeoffs. for different ideas of colour schemes etc go to Airliners.net

I have one that I bought already finished. It is done up as a Marine R4D. I have not been able to find any pics to support the paint scheme, but it is different and seems to hide some of the kit's funny lines. Not a bad flying plane. It wasn't really well done and at some point will be getting a full rebuild, possibly with a new wing. I am going to make the wing in 3 parts so it can ride around with the center section attached sitting on its wheels.

Vupilot, I am considering making straight floats for it, amphibs would be too heavy and complex. Would really make a unique model.

Wow, did he ever do a nice job on that plane, I will use some of his tricks, but as someone who has painted one plane already, I do not think I will go through that again!

Cheers!

I didn't look, but there must be a lot of strings on the TF DC3 in the multi-engine forum. Googling over there will help with lots of research.

The only fault with the plane is that there isn't enough room in the wing area for all the servos, retract equipt, fuel tanks and other stuff
So plan ahead .

That is what I hear as well. I am not sure I will be putting in retracts, they are a lot of extra work and cost and I am not sure of the benefit. Although it would be cool to have them. I am fighting the temptation as I write this, maybe I will put in the Robart Retracts.....

Oh, the choices.

Thankfully I have not even unpacked the box

Manks,

I'm the guy that built the C-47 that Dave sent you the link on. I had a great time building the kit and I'm sure you will too. Let me know if you would like any hints or if you have any specific questions. I would be happy to give you all of the knowledge that I have.

Just a few quick ones...
It will be tail heavy. Try to move as much as you can as far forward as possible.
The retracts don't fit and are a real pain to install. But it looks GREAT on a low fly-by with the legs up.

Thanks,

Ed

The retracts may be hard to set up, but they are well worth the effort. Seeing the DC-3 come across the field all cleaned up is just a vision that should not be cluttered with the gear down. Once again, Good Luck, Dave

I just decided i will build this kit this winter. I'm thinking Saito 40's for power. Any thought on three blade props? I've never fiberglassed before. But i think it will look a lot better with paint than Monokote. I'm willing to give it a try.

I'm really excited!!!

I have been wanting to replace the 2 Magnum .52fs on mine with the Saito .40. I have one in a 1/6th scale Super Cub and it is a great little engine. It hasn't quit in the air in the 6 years that I have had it and it is quite light and powerful. I would think an 8X6 3 blade would work well with it, although I havn't tried it.

WOW the 40 pulls the cub around just fine? I have a Saito 50 and an OS 52 surpass i want to put in the Hangar 9 40 Cub arf. Do you think it would be enough power? It's an 81" wing span. I also want to put floats on it. Do you think it would fly ok?

I have a Great Planes T-Craft 20 with an OS 30 Surpass and when i put floats on it, it would not even get off the water. It flys ok with out the floats though.

Now that i think about it i had the OS 52 Surpass on a Four Star 40 and it flew very well. We will see though.
