Default Sterling "Real Sporty" flies

It flies and pretty nicely too.

After seeing a couple posts here a few months back, I had a couple concerns about flying this one. It turns out that it's a great flying plane as long as you don't try to yank it off the runway too early. It will wake you up with a quick snap if you get slow, but it was not a difficult plane to fly at all. I'm running a Magnum XLS .15, and it's a pretty good combination.

I can remember back in the day, when Sterling kits were plentiful. Them and Goldberg were among the least difficult to build, while Sigs were considered more for craftsmen. Of course, none of them were easy and kit building was the only ticket into the hobby. Unless, of course, you were into the Cox, Testors, Gilbert, and Wen Mac plastic C/L models. These days, I am sure a kit like that would sell for some good money on EBay to a collector. It is nice to see this one built, and airworthy. And you did some very nice work.

Great looking plane you did a fine job. Is this from a kit or did you build from plans? I would not mind building one from plans, if there is enough information to do so.

This was from a kit, bps. Believe it or not, the cowling alone is 5 pieces, all ABS plastic. It has to be glued, fiberglassed for reinforcement, seems puttied, primed, and painted. The whole thing is sheeted. And the plane is small. Very small. It was originally designed for rubber-powered flight and the wingspan is only 21 inches!

Thanks for the compliments guys.

I got the kit on eBay a while ago, and had to build it. That's why it was made in the first place. The plans that come in the kit are nowhere near enough information to build one from scratch. My fuselage is pretty much scratch built though because the die cut parts don't fit, but I didn't actually make proper templates while I was building it.

Sterling actually made two different kits of this plane. This one was designed for R/C and is about a 40 inch wingspan, originally a quarter midget racer. There was also a small, rubber powered version.
