Default Sig Rascal Plans?

I'm interested in the .40 size Sig Rascal that used to be offered in kit form (now is only offered as an overpriced ARF). I believe it had a 72" wingspan. Does anyone have the plans from the kit that they no longer need and would sell me? I'll try to scratch build it from those.

You could buy the ARF and reverse engineer it?

For those that don't remember, the Rascal started out as an all balsa wood free flight. In 1959 it was my first free flight kit I built when I moved to Calif. to fly at the Supulveda Dam. I built a couple of them back then.

I built a couple of them back in the late 50's also. I liked them then also

I was born in '57 so I don't quite remember that far back!! The Rascal has such a classic and appealing look to it I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a kit earlier. Thought it would be in production longer. Or perhaps it is because my current collection of kits waiting to be built rivals some hobby shops. As my younger brother says, "this working for a living is overrated!!"

In terms of reverse engineering the ARF, the $220 price tag for the ARF squelches my willingness to try that.

The $220 factor has squelched the Rascal idea altogether for me

8, remember how it was such a nice plane we would clear dope and sand them then give them a smooth dope finish. The grade of wood we got back then was art in itself and I couldn't bring myself to ever paint one.

I must have lost them as free flights?

But I enjoyed building them.

I have been searching for those plans but no luck. An expensive alternative would be to buy the small Rascal kit (49" wingspan) and scale up the plans. Who knows, it might be fun to play around with such a small plane again.

I do a lot of kit building but I do have some ARFs and the 40 size Rascal is one of them. The price is a little steep but it is the best ARF I have come across. The narrow nose presented some problems fitting my OS 52 but, with a little creativity, it worked out.

Since the kits no longer exist I'll be sure to keep the pieces should my shiny new beast come to an untimely end (:-).

Regards

I wonder if the wing on the rascal 110 is the same as the little ones. Years back I severely damaged my R110 wing and stumbled onto another wing used. Been thinking lately about reverse engineering the one side thats not too damaged. The fuse is easy, pretty standard. I'd like to have a 144" ws rascal. Of all the planes in my stable, I hate to admit my favorite for the last 8 years is an arf, Rascal 110. I have thermaled that plane at our field.

These Rascal plans are $8.50 but are the smaller 49" Rascal that could be scaled up 147% to 72"?

You should call SIG at 641-623-5154 to see if the plans for the 72" kit are available.

One thing to note:
Many kit plans do not have all of the rib templates. The often have only the root rib. For a Rascal, with the elliptical wing, that might be a problem.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!! I also had thought of getting the 49" ws kit and seeing if I could scale the parts and plans up. That kit doesn't have ailerons but it shouldn't be difficult to retrofit them. I had bumbled around on the Sig website, but I didn't see anything indicating aftermarket plans offered, so the link by w8ye above may provide a cheaper alternative. Thanks for all the help!! CC

Well, I e-mailed SIG about the Rascal plans and they responded they never kitted the .40 size. The only kit was the 49" ws one. Seems I'm getting old and forgetful!!

I have a friend that Borrowed some World Engines Robinhood 99 plans back 10 yrs ago.

He has since built a Robinhood 99", I have a 80", he has a 70" and a 50" off those same plans by reducing them.

Yeah, my next move is to buy the 49"ws plans and take'm to Office Max and blow them up. Thanks again for pointing out where to find those plans. I did bumble around the SIG website and didn't find them earlier. CC
