I have also been a little delayed while I set up my new tool, a bandsaw. I got a gift card for Christmas that got me a good start on buying this tool. It should be a nice addition to the collection. I had to make the base and get it all dialed in.
You're gonna love your Jet Phil. I went from a Craftsman 12" "tilt-head" bandsaw to a 14" Jet a couple of years ago. Added a Rockler table and fence.

Congrats!

The process of covering the fuselage has begun... So far today I have covered up the bottom. I start at the bottom to make the seams a little less visible because the overlap will be in a downward direction.

Bye Bye joinery!

I'm betting I will use most of the 2.5 rolls I have. Ron will be the champion with the 1/3 Scale Cub Wings.

Despite it's cost Solartex is truely the only covering I "Enjoy" using. Sure Monokote will work, but... well.... it's Monokote.

I got the right side of the fuselage covered. First I went around the elevator stab with some small pieces then I went ahead with one sheet to cover the side. A slot was cut into the sheet to go around the stab.

I had to take a pause in the covering and add some bracing to the turtledeck. As I applied the covering to the fuselage I observed the upper side stringers on the turtledeck begin to pull away from the formers. The failure was not at the glue joint but was with the wood grain on the actual former. Fortunately I caught it before there was a complete separation of the parts... There was just some tiny caps opening up. So, I added some plywood triangles to each joint to eliminate the issue.

Now the covering can continue.

Looking good,
I covered my 1/3 J-3 with Solartex, it went down very well. I think I used a 10 meter and a 5 meter roll on the plane and not much to spare.
The fin fillet area was a bit harder to do with the Solartex than it was with fabric but it all worked out.
Later!!

Left Side of fuselage covered. Went a little faster than the right... However, I'm out of time for today.

Phil, I am thinking of using Magnets to latch my Cub door closed. The fuse sides are 3/8 thick Balsa. I wanted your opinion

Ron,

I'm really happy with how the magnets are holding my door on. With two opposing magnets the door really snaps into place.

I used 1/4"magnets so the width of your door should be fine.

Well......

I flew in the Arizona Electric Festival on Thursday and Friday but there was some really high winds today canceling flying. When I got home I was a little bummed I didn't get to fly so I decided to tackle the rudder - turtledeck - and rudder fillet covering.

The process began by cutting an oversized piece of covering. This covering was attached along the fuselage adjacent the elevator. The covering was then pressed down onto the rudder, pulling it tight, and was attached right in the area the rudder transitions into the spine of the turtledeck. After it was tacked on I worked the covering around the transition point until a good bit of covering was holding. After the transition was attached I pulled the covering tight at the top of the rudder and attached it. After the rudder was done I worked my way up the fuselage towards the front. With the oversized covering I was able to pull the covering tight as I worked my way forwards. Once the piece was attached I marked and cut the excess off, leaving an overlap of about 1/4 inch. Each side of the rudder / turtledeck was done with one piece each.

Because I am paranoid about the fillet I added a piece of covering, about 3/8" wide, over the area of the fillet to reinforce it. I did this on my 1/5th Cub and there has been no issue with the covering pulling apart at that location.

This morning I decided to finish up the covering. I got the elevator covered and cut out the windows. All went well......<o></o>

Next up, paint! I was not really happy with the color mix of the red, came out somewhat orange. So, I have the red on order and will re-spray the cowl and struts. I had ordered a custom color of Missile Red (Matches Monokote) and that is where the orange tint came from. The new red will be "Bright Red" which is a stock color for Klass Kote. I will give those parts good sanding before I put on another layer of paint.<o></o>

The fuselage, however, is ready for the cream color... Now I just need to find the time.<o></o>

Missle red: humm

i had an issue with that. !!! Remember my Sukoi that first had the radial. Its was monokote. I bought the "Missle Red" to touch up the cowl and it wound up orange

never did figure that one out ??

Maybe the orange tinge is accurate? Whatever the case I think I chose poorly. No matter what I am not happy with it so now is the time for change. I found a photo of a Jet painted in the Klass Kote "Bright Red" and that is the color red I wanted.. Hopefully the paint gets here by next weekend and I can start painting. The fuselage, short of a last once over with the covering iron, is ready for the cream color so I can start to paint that. I can also do a little sanding on the parts I already painted red to prep them for the new layer.

Plenty to do to keep myself busy!

The main portion of the painting has begun. I have not received my new red paint yet, expect it next week, but I did get a good start on the cream color. I mixed up the paint and was able to complete the fuselage and the lower door. I was running low on mixed paint and time so I did not attempt to paint the rudder. The rudder is the last piece that will be painted the cream color. The paint went on well with no issues. I am going to have lots of paint left as it covers so well.

I used a tack rag on the fuselage just prior to paint. There are a few flaws, which comes with painting outside, but I am very happy with the results.

The stabilizer for the elevators will be red in color so I didn't fully paint them.

I will most likely paint the rudder tomorrow so I can be done with one of the colors.

After doing some paint I went ahead with a little change in the motor. I still have the Hacker A60-14L, and it will be used on my next model, but this plane is getting a different motor. The new motor will be a Hacker A60-7S. The A60-7S is 10 oz lighter than the 14L and will provide about 200 more watts at 10S (2500 watts). The reason for the switch is two fold. First to get a lighter motor and second, and more importantly, to get a smaller prop. The 22" prop would clear the ground but not by much. So I changed motors to allow for a smaller prop. The new prop is a 20X10.

I just had visions of the prop hitting the ground with the slightest bounce.

It was tack free in about 30 minutes..... The data sheet said it will be "Print Free" in 4 hours but I will let it sit for several days before touching it. The data sheet also said it is reaches "SwardHardness" (AKA Full) in about a week.

Here is a link to the data sheet.

http://www.klasskote.com/data_sheets

The paint is really exceptional. It sprays really easy and provides a great color.

The true expert is Austin. He has sprayed the paint with both the gloss hardner and the flat hardner. Per Austin, the flat is a little easier to apply and avoid any flaws. For some reason the flat harner hides any flaws. Austin paints outside like I do.

Here is a little closer shot of the paint. It is a little hard to tell but it is really smooth. You can also see where I feathered out the cream color paint on the elevator stabs, which will be red in color when done.
