Default Stearman Kit Wanted

Hello all. With the weather starting to turn cold here in Saskatchewan, I am getiing the notion to build a kit. I would realy like to build a PT-17 Stearman, in about the 70 to 80 inch wing size. I love the looks of the Great Planes Stearman ARF, but would like something in a kit. Does anyone know of anything out there?

Midwest has a 1/6 scale Stearman...I think it's a 60 to 65 inche span.

Sterling has a very scale like Stearman...they're on Ebay now and again. Sterling's is probably the nicest looking Stearman...and would be the most challenging build as well.

Lazerworks is currently working on re-fabricating the Sterling Stearman. It's nearly done.

It's not as large as your original post describes... but.. it's a Stearman...

Here's the thread that talks about it.

vmsguy, I was looking at that one, but its a 64 inch span. I might have to settle for that. It looks like I might be able to get a kit cut from Kit Cutters Inc. of a Nick Ziroli 77 inch span plane. I need to check into this. Anyone had dealings with Kit Cutters that they want to share? Looks like you can get 77 inch span or 87 inch span.

Ziroli has plans for a 77" steerman. You can get a kit cutter to cut the parts. I was going to start one next year when I ran across a built Z steerman at a swapmeet this year. So I bought it.

The midwest kit is a great kit.Easy to build and complete.
I am in the prosess of building the Ziroli 77 inch from a kit cutters box of sticks. This is not a kit for the new builder. I find that if you don't have a back ground in building you will have a tough time putting this together. You need to fabricate the landing gear, struts and all the parts needed to assemble.Flying my first one with a SPE 43 gas and it flies great. The one I am building now will have the OS 5-300 five cyl engine. It is heavy but I have heard the it flies just fine with the big five cyl.
This is my second Ziroli and even then it is hard. There is no instructions no pictures. All you have is a set of plans and a box of sticks.
It is a challenge but lots of fun.

Thanks klutz-1, I appretiate the info. I didnt realize that. While I am not new to building, I am not an expert by any means. I would not want something like that untill I retire from work someday. The Balsa USA 1/3 scale is beautiful kit, but I was wanting something 1/4 scale. I am keeping an eye on the lazer works one to see what they are worth, delivery date and such. It is a bit smaller than I wanted, but sounds like it could be a very nice and complete kit. Later

Flair Products in the UK do a superb 1/4 scale Stearman kit, There is a good build thread on RCU as well, by "cyberwolf", I think.

I have the Sterling one framed. The mods I did to it are free! Still a Sterman but a different airplane.

I thought I had another Sterling in my rafters, but I find a lot of other stuff. No Sterling Stearman:-(((((( I built one years ago, and still have it hanging in the garage. Robart made functional landing gear struts that are well worth the money and effort.

p,s, When in the heck is RCU going to get these "thumbnails" back to thumbnail size??????

Another thing I just noticed. An aluminum motor mount. The last time I did that, the first crash I had (and yes, if you fly you will crash, it is just a matter of time) the motor mount was stronger than the engine, and the crash tore the mounting bosses off of the engine, along with part of the engine case. Needless to say, no more aluminum motor mounts for me.
