Lost interest in a build

I have a Flyline Great Lakes Trainer that I partially built back in 1977. Got bored with it and finally got back to work on it in 2005 and finished it up. The interest should come back eventually unless the particular style/type of aircraft looses it's appeal to you.

Thanks for all the replies and great ideas. I'm going to set it back for now and when my grandson gets a little older,he and grandpa well finish it for his first plane . Now I'm actually looking forward to building this kit with him. Thanks again gang. Happy Holidays

When I am building I usually build three or four planes at a time and do similar assemblies on each one at the same time. Keeps me from being bored with one plane, and if i catch fire and have a vision on a particular one I move it up and work it faster than the others, but I keep the others moving. Some steps like installing linkages are tedious for me and so I will set aside a particular day and do nothing but cut pushrods, solder, and do basic servo adjustments. I build my planes to about 95% complete and then hang 'em up so that if I crash something or sell it or just retire a plane, I am never more than an overnight away from having something else in the air. I have also found that the best thing to help me want to build is to fly, and fly and fly. A good weather day where I am forced to build or repair, is a bummer. I choose bad weather and cold days here in Denver for building.

Well, guys, no one, so far has beatin' me for procrastination!!LOL!!
In 1986 I built a Miles Reed designed Weeks Special, flew it until about '96 when it went in because of wing flutter. Because the tail feathers survived, and it was such a great flier, I promised myself I'd build another one. So about '97 I started another one, bought new wheel pants, cowl and canopy, built the fuselage and it sat for 10 years, while I played around with one plane after another. 3 yrs. ago I got around and built the bottom wing, but lost my entusiasm again. A year ago I built the top wing, and because of other projects it sat until this summer and I finally got around and finished it. Before I left for the winter in AZ, I got 5 flights on it and it still one of the prettiest, sweetest flying planes in the barn. I've posted some of the pictures before, but here she is. When I look at her I wonder why I waited so long.

I've hit the wall before, and one thing that helps is to stop when I feel not into it and get some chores done around the house that have been put off. Sometimes I'll make a list and say when that list is done, I'll consider restarting the plane and very often when the list is done, I'm emotionally ready to get back at the plane.
Another think that makes a difference for me when I hit the wall is to stop construction and clean up and put tools away so that they don't have to be hunted.
I've never allowed myself multiple build projects. What I do allow is getting a plane when it is available and laying it back until it can find its way to the focal point.

I was building an UpRoar 60 with great intrest until I started trading Penny Stocks.
I did well enough to get an AreoWorks 75cc Extra 260 and a BME 102 , smoke
system and the works. I have been using wood from the uproar kit to complete
other projects. It would have been a great airplane but I have gone way past
it now. All peices are still there to complete it, I just used the punch out ply for
other planes,, maybe some day?

If you want to start another thread about a build, you might try building the plane, taking pictures as you go and Then start the thread about the build. That way there is no dead line or guilt trip about keeping the thread going that you started and the plane is done.

I haven't necessaraly lost interest in a build but with work and all the othere distractions going on in life, its easy to let a project sit and collect dust for a time.
I am at this point in a couple of projects myself, I just got some retracts for the plane I am working on, for some motovation to get going on this project, its been sitting for way to long in a nearly finished state.
I find if I buy a little part or accesory for a project it helps get the drive back to at least get a section of the project done, small steps lead to larger ones etc...since I primaraly build wwII fighters there's alot of little steps to get done

I've done a couple of build threads and found that I lost interest in them when I felt that I had to provide something for the thread readers to read.
I still have an Aeronca that hasn't had it's maiden and I have another that I just don't feel like covering, and I have another that needs a radio dropped into it and linkages set up.
Also have a Lancair on the board. It's hard to get interested in working on it because I prefer the stick type planes like cubs, citabrias, and the like.
My age takes me back to the days in the 40's and 50's when I bought Comet kits. They were all built up with sticks.
That's enough from me. I say finish it and go forward or it's like mowing half the yard and knowing you will have to finish it tomorrow....should have done it all at one time.

Thanks for the support , I have done 2 other build threads and finished them with no problems. Right now I'm laying up the fuse on a CG Clipped wing Cub, but did,nt bother doing a build thread on it. I have a LT40 thats next and a BTE Venture after that and then I may finish the Kadet Sr. Right now I'm trying to replenish my fleet. Swore off ARF's last year and got rid of every one but a GP SkyBolt which has been heavily modded to improve it's airframe

I don't care for doing build threads. I enjoy building but I build at my own pace. Sometimes very fast, sometimes things will sit for months. But doing a build thread makes me feel obligated in some way and this is supposed to be fun. So here's what I've done on my current project.
I'm building another Dirty Birdy, just about my all time favorite plane. The last one I built took me two months from kit to take off, but this one has really been draging. I got all the way to having it shaped and ready for installation of the controls, then it just sat for several months. Yep, there's the wall. But with a little time off for Christmas I finally started working on it and in just a few days I've done what I hadn't done in months. Now it's very nearly ready for filling and final sanding. It was always there when I wanted to build and I never felt like I HAD to build. So it's always been enjoyable to work on. But I've been keeping notes.
The Dirty Birdy instructions can be a little confusing so I've been updating the instructions as I go along. When I get the plane in the air I'll be able to post a fully updated set of instructions to help others through the confusing parts, but it hasn't felt like the obligation that I would lay on myself if I were doing a build thread. And I think the format of instruction updates will be more useful than a series of posts saying "Here's what I did last night." We'll soon see how it works out.
I generally don't like having more than one project going at a time. For me, starting another project dooms the current one and ups the possibility that I'll have two unfinished planes instead of one. Plus if I insist that I finish this one before starting the next, maybe it'll provide the motivation to get me over the hump and get this one going again. It's what works for me. Getting excited about the next build is part of what made me get back in gear on the Dirty Birdy. And once I got going again I can't wait to finish it.

i think we'v all been there with pushing aside build at one time or another....i put a tf corsaire 60 together and its sitting on the wall waitting for me to finnsh the control surfaces[ailerons].
i have since built many other planes but really don't mind that the corsairs not done,
for me its partly because i don't have the pilotingskills yet to handle such a bird.here are a few of the bird i'v built ,

Me too Gary, it's fun to share ideas and for me makes the build go smoother. I'm going to restart mine as soon as I get my fleet built back up. The way kits are being discontinued, scratch building is in my near future.

My Feedback: (8)
All I have to say is I get burned out alot, I have two wall racks that are 8' tall, every peg is used to hold the planes and wings. Currently, there are maybe 3 flyable right now planes on that wall, the rest need something fixed, repaired or finished to be considered flyable. So everytime I come down into "MANLAND", I turn the corner and see all the waiting planes. It's just too easy to get burned out on a kit or rebuild and just put it aside and start a new bird. I made a little new years resolution, don't start till you finish, that is, don't start a new plane untill I finish some of the close projects. Yeah, I'm fighting my way through a compleet re sheeting of my topflite P-47 and glassing, but when it's usable again, I'll feel better. I really want to see every plane on those 2 racks ready to go, but it takes patience and dedication to keep yourself moving through the pile.

I don't have an answer for you, but this is the only rc plane that I haven't finished....It's a Dumas DH89a(Pat Tritle design).
The plane seemed to be design for display..no access to servos.. lousy reciever access..extremly light frame..Heavy abs cowlings..underpowered..I re designed the servo mounts and tested the twin ips power system on a GWS Slowstick... No way..(maybe indoors)..
I could have added a brushless outrunner setup but the thing ate up enough of my time...now it is where it belongs.

Sebo- It's just a 44" electric park flyer but it was supposed to come in at over 16 oz and only use about 24 watts for power.
Ya never know... it's somwhere I see it every day to remind me. One of these days I will forget how much time I already have in it and finish it. It's a cool lookin little plane I just don't think it would handle more power and a grass landing.
