I wanted to take a look at several types of .60 size to 1/4 scale (or larger) tailwheel options and how to best set-up a pull-pull system correctly with different type tailwheels. I am building a 1/4 scale Cub now but want this thread to cover all types of larger tail gear options, the best way to set them up and how the rudder is rigged to work with a connected wheel or with a free-casting wheel. I think if we can post several pics with the discriptions, it will be of great help (at least to me who is used to very basic tail gear and single control rod rudder control). Attached is the latest project.... thanks for the help guys.

In tall paul's 3rd pic that looks like a dubro set up. If it is I have used two of them they work great. It comes with the wheel, bracket, springs, rudder control horn, wires, and all the connecting pieces. I have one on a 4star 120 and one on a great planes Extra 300s 60 size. I also have a pull pull on my 1/5 scale sig cub. I used the supplied parts for it, and it works great. I put it on my cub first and was worried but I prefer that now over the other. I deffinately do not like a tail wheel with out any control. I have seen them several times, and tried to taxi someone elses. They suck!

Look at how the fullscale Cub tailgear is made. It has a spring steel tailwheel 'strut' and the tailwheel has 'horns'. The horns are connected to springs. The other end of the springs attach to 'horns' on the rudder. You can duplicate the rudder horns with music wire, brass tubes flattened on one end and drilled to accept springs all 'fleshed out' with epoxolite or JB Weld. There are some commercial items available for the tailwheel itself. I have made them from music wire silver soldered to a modified wheel collar. I groove around the wheel collar so that the music wire will wrap around the collar for soldering. The wheel itself is mounted to music wire and the wheel fits over a brass tube. This brass tube has holes drilled to accept a 'cotter pin' for wheel retention. Slip another wheel collar over then solder a brass tiller to the end after inserting this assembly into strut. Once soldered you can adjust the free wheel collar to suit how much vertical 'play' you want. (Paint as needed before final assembly)

I've seen the dubro on a 1/4 scale super cub. It wasnt holding up too good. The plastic was bending to the point of almost dragging on the ground. Granted, it took awhile to get to that point. But I think metal would be the way for the larger. I am using sigs large tail gear setup on a busa 1/4 scale J3.
