I just bought me a in nearly excellent shape Ultra Sport 1000 complete with Magnum 1.20 four stroke and all the servos for $300 and it flies really nice. The engine seems tired but that is ok ill get my hands on a Saito 1.25 and ill be set.

That's a great deal. Looks real nice too. That Magnum might just need a new piston ring, but I like the Saito engines the most.

Wore out an old OS 120 FS (non surpass) in my US1000, swapping to a Saito 150 now.

Your looks great!

Twin flyer, I have an old OS 120 fs. How did it fly the US1000?

It flew it but had very little vertical. However, mine was already old and well used when it went into my 1000 20 years ago so if your has less time on it, it might do the job a lot better.

i expect the low time Saito 150 to be a different story though! Im sure i will pay for that added power in glow fuel unfortunately. if i could fit a DLE30 in the nose I would but as i don't feel like cutting it up for a facelift I'm not inclined to try. prop clearance might be an issue as well but if i were building a new one, that would be my engine of choice.

How about a NGH 26cc or Evolution 20cc gas enginesfor the Ultrasport 1000? These have front carbs and would not require a bit tear up of the cowl except for the bulky gas carb.

The Evolution 20 has the same power as a .91 two stroke glow. The 26 might get you about the same performance as the 1.20 four stroke that you have in it now.

Here's the OS FS-120 I have. Just needs a good cleaning. I had to have it because I like the dual rocker covers. The muffler seems tiny for it though. From the sounds of it, it doesn't have enough power for the US 1000.

I have a friends US1000 in my basement for several months now. He's talking about getting out of the hobby so I may have work out a deal with him on it. Anybody ever put two 60 size 2-strokes on a US1000?

Exact engine i have. It depends on what kind of performance your looking to get out of the plane. Its not a 3D type plane. If you want a "Sunday flyer" type that engine will get the job done. Don't forget there is a reason OS went to the Surpass line, as they put out at least 20% more power.

Did you have the same size muffler? From my research, there is a smaller and larger muffler used on this engine.

My engine has no muffler, just the header pipe.

Sounded fine that way too so i never bothered to check to see if it was even supposed to have one!

Going to make a base and stand for it and use as paperweight at my office as there are no parts available for it not too mention it not worth rebuilding...

All this talk about engines on the 1000, I have a 60 size kit I want to build and if I do it will be getting a YS 1.15. We race .40 size warbirds with the 1.15 so I would think it would be the perfect match for the 60 size. I had an old YS 1.20 on my 1000 about 20 years ago and it was good, but not knock your socks good. I think a 1.20 would be the smallest size I would run on the 1000.

That's right. There's the header pipe as well.

The newer surpass engines have larger valves for more power.

You should be be able to get new bearings and piston rings for it.

I could get bearings but doubt a ring. With its age its probably due for a piston and cylinder too,.

However the bolt deep in the head by the glow plug has part of a hex key snapped off inside it and I have yet to find a way to remove it so its sits on the bench collecting dust...

Frank Bowman use to make piston rings but I heard he retired. Now there someone out of the U.K. that makes them. For a ringed engine a new ring is all you would need to bring it back.

That's too bad about the cylinder head bolt. I use heat to loosen stubborn bolts now. Perhaps mounting the engine in a block and using a drill press to drill the bolt just enough to pop the head off will do the trick.

If it is an OS engine, Tower Hobbies sells all the OS engine spares.

i know Frank Bowman retired but was not aware of someone else making replacement rings. Wish i had ordered a few for the current engines i have as i have heard very good things about them!

Also thought about using a drill press with the bolt but i wonder if the allen key is a harder steel and will i be able to drill it. Also if i remove the head of the bolt will i be able to find a replacement?

In the end its an old engine. Will look nice on my desk cleaned up! lol

You might want to call Tower Hobbies and ask them if their piston ring for the 120 Surpass III is backwards compatible with your pre-Surpass engine: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCT33&P=7. Same for the screw set they sell for the 120 Surpass: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCV57&P=SM. I know a lot of the OS parts are back-wards compatible.

Really the only challenging issue for me is removing the broken bolt.

That is, if you really want to restore that engine in the first place.

Well I just received a Ultra Sport 1000 NIB unopened kit yesterday, I've been looking for one for quite some time...can't wait to start it, but first I have to finish a Sig Morrisey Bravo that's on my build table. Requesting a number in the brotherhood.

I haven't seen any of you guys post something so I very much like to do this for all of us, Well if Great Planes gave us a 60 size Kaos ARF well I think its definitely time to say that Great Planes has now given us wait for it.... Introducing the Great Planes Ultra Sport 40 ARF with retracts for $199.99, I'm so getting one of these I have a Saito 82 GK that needs a home and this plane could very well be the home for this motor I think. Tower Hobbies is showing arriving mid January. Now the wait is on and I'm really digging the color scheme too.

I saw that. It is excellent news and I would get one if I didn't already have a US40 kit. Should be orders of magnitude better than the old US 40 ARF.

Great Planes UltraSport 40 ARF with free shipping and discount coupon: $140

Airborne Model Aeropet 50 with shipping: $134

My experience with Great Planes with several models has been good to excellent, but my one and only experience with Airborne/World Models has been very bad. To me, the extra $6 is well worth it.

Agreed, my few bad experiences with Great Planes models all ended well. My one bad experience with Airborne/World Models ended in the trash can.
