Anyone ever try segmented balsa fillets? I'm thinking about trying it on a 40 size plane. I'll make the ''L'''s out of 1/4'' sheet. Lets see 10'' fillet divided by .25'' = 40 segments. X 2 = 80 segments on a .40 size plane. Sounds like all kinds of scroll saw fun. Can't be any worse than this!

Do you do that type of scroll sawing as a hobby? I spend just as much time scroll sawing things like what youve pictured for my hobby as I do building airplanes. Thats actually my most favorite part and I enjoy it the most.

LOL, yeah. I was just making a comment on how alot of us can enjoy sawing even if it's just some trinket that will just sit on the shelve collecting dust. Then there are others that look at doing simple cuts like kit cutting as some monotonous task better left to others.

Would it be nuts to put a 95AX on an US60?  I have been on the lookout for a 75AX, but the 95AX seems to come on the market more often.  I have had very good luck with acquiring good quality 2nd hand engines, enough so that even if I get burned on one I am ahead.  It seems like you can often find like new engines for 50-60% of street price for equivalent new engine.

I am thinking fuel consumption would be the biggest negating factor.  Remarkably they both weigh about the same.  I don't think I would be going full throttle that much with the 95AX, which may help it sip fuel.

Any thoughts?

I'd say it's overkill if nothing else. Why put a more powerful engine on it if you're never going to use it to it's potential?

There is a ground clearance problem, I'm running OS75 ax with 13x8 prop and it eats props.
I heard complaints about the 95AX that its dead sticking alot because of the carb.

I think anything larger than a 75 you will have problems in the nose area. I had to go to a larger mount for the 75 AX. Modifications were not difficult, but 75 pulls it straight up. I am using a 13X8 also and seems great

Thanks for the advice guys. Good reminder about the prop clearance. Ithough about that some in passing, as Ihave a Saito 56 on my Tower Trainer 40 and even with trike gear I am always eating up props. Iam building/acquiring/restoring planesfaster than I am learning to fly them.

Right now Ihave the TT 40, a 40 size Stik with an O.S. 61FX on it (likely that is the engine Iwill end up using on the US 60), a Sig Rascal 40 with a Saito 65 (plenty of prop clearance on that one), and Iambuilding a GP Aeromaster 60 size. I have started a build thread on the Aeromaster kit build here in this forum.

The US 60 is going to be my next kit build. Hopefully by the time it cools off down here this fall Iwill have both new kit planes ready to fly.

I will probably replace the 61FXon the Stik with aspare 46AX I have; the 46 will beplenty for it's intended purpose as my second plane.

If the 61FX is not enough for the US 60, the 75AX is pretty much a bolt in replacement.

Try an APC 12-10, will give you more clearance.

The 75 AX may have the same bolt pattern of a 61, but it was too big for the Great Planes engine mount that was up to a .60 size if I remember correctly.

Yep, but I think the 60 size one came with the kit.

You are correct, the 60 size mount does come with the kit. If you want to go with the 75 (or bigger) you will have to purchase a new motor mount for the plane.

The mount that comes with the US 60 kit fit my ST 90 and Mike said he used it for his OS 75 with no problems.. It works great for clearance, no problems getting it in or out..

I have a Tower Hobbies 0.75 in my US60 and fits perfect with the small mount that comes with the kit.

Thanks for squaring me away on that guys. I've never put anything bigger than an OS 61 FX in any US I've flown

When I mentioned the mount for the 75 earlier, I meant that OS makes a pre-drilled aluminum mount for it. I use them as much as possible because I hate drilling motor mounts.

Ken,

I hope Ihave not asked this before, but do you like the 61FX/US60 combo? That is the engine I have and Iam leaning towards for mine. It is so quiet!

The only reason Ihave been looking for a 75AX is the accolades given it on the US60 by Mike B.

Being US Brotherhood #1, I do consider you an authority...

Like I said, every US I've ever owned had an OS 61 FX on it. And it performed great!!!!! You won't be sorry going with the combo. There's nothing wrong with using a 75 AX on it, but it's not necessary to have a great flying plane. If you already have the 61 go with that and you'll be tickled with the plane. If you're buying an engine, then go ahead and get the 75.

Ken

I agree, if you have the .61, throw it in and go fly. If you want more, then you can always get more with the 75. I have a US .40, started with a TT .40 Pro, it flew it well, but would lose a lot of speed at the top of big loops and vertical was so-so. I flew it with that engine for 1.5 years, then about 4 months ago slapped in a OS .55. Love love love it with this engine!

But it flew fine with the .40 and at the time it was what I had so I went with it. If you don't have an engine, then I'd go for the .75, but if you already have the .61, fly it with that.

I have used a Super Tigre .90 on mine and that motor gives the plane unlimited vertical and i am using a 13-8 or slightly snipped down 13-10 i dont recall really.

I just threw a new Super Tigre 90 on mine. It really woke it up. I thought about the .57, I' am glad I bought the 90..

Good luck

I bought a 55AX/75AX engine combo last night for a little less than half of street price. The claim is they have both only had two tanks of run time, and by appearance that is accurate. So Iwill have a 75AX for my US 60 build!

My 46AX/61FX combo that these are replacing are now on the block to help offset the cost...

I vow to finish my Aeromaster build before Istart the US 60. You heard it here! Actually, I don't have room to perform multiple kit builds and would likely lose my place and/or parts, so it will be a few months yet before I start the Ultrasport, but I can't wait.

I soloed my TT40 again last Sat AM in about 8 mph wind. I landed it successfully several times but actually did best when I had to do a dead stick landing! Maybe Ineedto pull back on thethrottle a little more? Duh. I am getting more confident and cannot wait to fly some of my other planes because I think they will actually perform better in the wind!

I finally had my friend maiden my 40 size ultra sport arf the other day. I have a couple of questions. I was told cg should be 4" from the leading edge, stupid question, is that from next to the body or at the tips? We thought we had it balanced about right, but as he was flying it, it started getting a little snap rollish on him as the fuel was being burned up. I just now found the 4" measure afterwards []. What should the throws of the elevator be?

Thanks

My pictures are on page 34 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_96...34/key_/tm.htm

The starting point for the CG is 4" back at the fuse - but remember, this is only the starting point. If it's getting snappy, you can move it forward an 1/8 inch or so.

The correct CG is where the plane flies best for YOU

As for throws - Ditto

Thanks Mike, that is what I figured, but I wanted to make sure. It made him a little nervous and he is a very good sport pilot (you have meet him, Geoff knows Dave E.) so I did not fly it Monday. It has an Italian Supper Chicken on it and it moved ok, needs a little more power )))))
