Dave Platt sells a video Back to Basics that covers silk, silkspan, etc. His videos a great a tremendous learning opportunity from a master.

Just in the process of doing my Cub and I,ve found the best method is to applying Koverall is this , I use elmers glue (wood glue )apply a thin coat over area to be done apply koverall and work it in to the material with your finger as I put it on stretch it round wing tips get a paint brush with some watered down glue and work that in ,it helps get the koverall over the leading and trailing edges ,then I leave it for 12 hrs or until throughly dry then put covering iron over it ,it shrinks up perfect every time and leaves a perfect job ,,, once thats done I then apply a very thin coat of watered down glue over it all that seals the koverall ready for the under coat then final top coats of the colour and hey presto you are done try this way you wont be dissappointed i bet

Go to www.stits.com and order the video. Plus take a look at all the FAQs and instructions on the website. Check out the "crewmembers" section to see some models covered in Stits lite.

I would never cover this plane in silkspan. it's to easy to tear during the handling and other things that go on with a model. There are a lot of coverings out that are much better. It would work, but you have to be careful and take good care of it. I just like silk a lot better and it's much stronger. Coverite is great stuff, but a little on the heavy side. I have covered 60 size planes with it before and really like it. Using something like stits, you can paint a couple of coats of Balsarite on it first and then put the covering on with an iron. It's a heat activated glue like MonoKote and the other have on the back side of their covering. You can also use glue like some other do. It works great. There are probably 100 different ways to cover that plane.

So I guess it will be koverall and Balsarite, I'll never really know until I try.

I've never used Koverall, but I have used Super Coverite and it's great stuff, just a little on the heavy side. Not enough to make the plane fly bad, just a few oz more then some of the other coverings. You also have to fill it and paint it, but then we were mostly doing that back then anyway. MonoKote was kind of new and not everyone was using it. We still did the old silk and dope trick quite a bit back then and I had more then one done up like that. If you are interested in using Koverall, go for it. If you have to use the Balrite to put it on, litely and the first coat down a little just to get the fuzz off the balsa and then put another coat on. Works for me using another covering and it sticks great.

By the way, if you use Balsarite, you may want to take that outside. It kind of stinks up the house and wash your hands good after you paint it on. It's good stuff, just has some chemicals in it that stink up your house good. Kind of like Dope if you have ever used that, only Ithink it is a little worse.

If you want a great looking fabric, use SOLARTEX (from Balsa USA). It's an iron-on, it's already fuel proof, it goes on easily, shrinks up nicely and it LOOKS GREAT! No glue, no balsarite, no dope or adhesive of any kind. It takes any kind of paint or dope for a final finish. As they used to say in commercials years ago, no muss, no fuss, looks great.
