Nice Work Vincent. Everything looks fantastic, can't wait to see the final project. I like your paint rack, nice idea for holding the fuse for painting. Once again, I have really enjoyed this thread and seeing some different ideas on how to accomplish some of the tasks. I have the Cessna 182 that is supposed to be glassed and your posts have taken some of my fear away from tackling that project. But first, I have to finish up a few things and build a Mr. Mulligan, that is one project I have to do first as its been years in the making.

A "quick" sanding of the fuse turned into another four hour sanding marathon! After I thought I was through sanding I held a light down the sides of the fuse to help magnify any irregularities in the surface. I did find three or four small areas which I filled and repaired. The fuse is now ready to be taped for the panel lines, but first I will bring the fuse to work and blow it off thoroughly with compressed air to get off as much dust as possible.

I did also find the time and energy to finish the other wheel pant. I will not start on the spats until the fuse is completed.

LOL Sanding is the worst part. And if you really, really, really want a glass finish wipe it down with black chalk then sand and admire all the holes you could not see before. LOL
Can not wait to see the paint going on.

Very, very nice work VJ. Are you going to use chart tape to make your panel lines with? Ispent my wkend taking down and putting away Chrstmas http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../sad_smile.gifbut I did manage to work on my Mustang ironing out the wrinkles and looking over everything in the eveningwhile watching a couple of good videos on the Mustang and the B-17. Still some amazing aircraft, and even more amazing are the men who flew them. The Mustang went from drawing board to test model in only 120 days, and a B-17 cost $500,000 back then. The 8th airforcehad over 50,000 casualties alone and lost 40% of their bombers in 43. What did you name your Ryan, Imissed that somewhere here.

Thanks SDP. Glassing the fuse was agood decision for me, it gave the fuse thelook I was after and it will better withstand the roadrashfrom transportation. I'm sure when you glass yourwarbird you'll feel the same way.

Anthony, I keep telling myself the sanding will soon be over. My workshop is a mess coveredin very fine dust. I'm going to have to really give it a good cleaning before I start on the covering.

Raptureboy, I won't be using chart tape for the panel lines I'll be using just plain old blue painter's tape. The tape will give me the look and feel of overlaping sheetmetal seams that I won't get with the chart tape. You didn't miss anything on the name, I didn't reveal it as I have to leave a little something for the ending! What was the name of those videos they sound pretty interesting? B-17 is one of my all time favs.

Vince, that makes sense on the panel lines, there is a thread here on the Hellcat where they did the same thing using tape and spot putty. The videos were part of a box setI got one Christmas, and included the B-24, 17, P-47,51, andBritish and German fighters. Mostly b&amp;w footage but some color and lots of interviews with pilots and crew members. No night off for me. I did manage to mark off where the forward three panel lines needed to go and put down some tape. I won't be able to do all of the panel lines in one shot as it has to be done in stages. Since I do all of my spraying at work I will bespraying last nights panels lines today after work. Just remembered that I left my camera home so there won't be any photos tonight either http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...used_smile.gifas I am already here atwork. Wish I had a compressor at home. The weatherman has predicted snow for tomorrow so this may prove to take longer than it should....</p>

In light of the possible bad weather and the possibility of school cancellation for tomorrow, I decided to stay late after work and wait for the primer to dry so I could bring the fuse back home with me. As I said previoulsly, last night I taped off the three forward panel lines andthis is how I did it.

While at the local hardware store buying a few needed items, I saw a new type of tape called "Frog Tape". Its claimsof "keeps lines sharp and keeps paint out" sounded interesting, and always looking for new things to try I bought a roll for my panel lines. This tape is green in color and looks just like the old blue painters tape. As I applied the tape making note of which side of the tape I wanted to fill with primer so as to have thepaint edge going in the right direction. I adjusted the nozzle of my spray gun from a wide fan pattern to one that was a bit more concentrated. As I sprayed the primer I was trying to lay the paint to fill the edge between the fuse and the tape edge. After the paint had cured I took some 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sanded the top of the tape, specifically the edge of the tape that was nearest the fresh paint. My intent was to sand the top edge clean to help get a clean crisp line whenremoveing the tape. The results are very suttle but one that I was hoping to achieve.

Tomorrow I will tape off the next and last few panel lines.

Ah, very clever. Do you have to do anything special to keep future coats of paint from obscuring the line or pooling up against it?

No Tim, as Robert correctly stated when the color goes on it will become more visable. The rivets will go on flanking the edge. After all that sanding it did feel wrong to purposely create a visable edge...

I just saw an ad for Frog Tape on TV. The ad said the glue on the tape has a polymer what reacts with water and instantly turns to gel, stopping bleed through. Did it work good? Wonder if the same effect will be achieved with solvent based paint.

The sales guy took some water and poured it onto a cup of the polymer, then turned it upside down with no drips.
From one of their ads:

Dont know if it was the "paint block technology" or just good contact- it seemed to work real well, the paint edges are very crisp. But now that you mention it, I did notice what I thought was a sticky glue residue left on the surface which I thumbed right off. Similar to rolling up rubber cement when you were a kid at school.

FYI...The guys I know who have used Frog Tape moistened the edge with water before painting. They reported a very god result.

I haven't tried the overlap method yet. I always use the Chart-Pak tape but I like the look you achieved.

They are calling for .2" of ice here tonight. If that happens I may have to stay home and work on the Waco:D.

Good Tip, just a damp rag ran along the edge before painting would do the trick. I wiah they made a tape that would do compound curves.

Robert, not real sure where and how to use that liquid masking, could you elaborate more. I like to learn about new products and incorporate them if they work well.

Raptureboy, seeing how pronounced the raised edge is with just one layer of tape I would be concerned that <u>two</u> layers would be <u>too</u> much (no pun intended, ok maybe a little).It certainly is more convenient to use the spot putty than paint however I'm wondering if the inconsistant thickness of putty spread over the tape will show through the paint? Would be interested in seeing it in paint.
