As I recall, it is the same cowl they use on the Sig Kougar?

I got a fiberglass cowl for the Kommander a couple of years back from Fiberglass Specialties.

www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com

I see they still have it listed on their web site.
The cowl is an SK-23 for $24.00.

Charlie's Hobbies (Tampa FL 813-882-4007) has a Sig Komander cowl. I was looking at it today. I loved the looks of that plane but got into the hobby too late to get one. I'm sure Charlie would ship it to you.

Hmmm...I'll go by there tomorrow at lunch. I saw it last week. It has to be there. They do have a ton o' stuff though and the Monday guys may not know what to look for.

Isn't the Kommander the forerunner to the Kavallier?

AdrianM 07-13-2004 10:34 PM

RE: SIG komander cowl??

They were out at the same time. The Kavalier was a 35-46 size plane and the Kommander was 46-60 size.

Sure enough someone bought that cowl...sorry..

The Kommander is a nice looking kit.

RE: SIG komander cowl??

I've built three Komanders. Great second plane choice or everyday sport flyer. Nice looking and nice flying, while looking a bit more spiffy than the Kavalier, imho. There is a definite weak spot with the canopy though in that the back of it is unsupported where it sits over the wing. Mine all would develop cracks at the edge where the canopy was glued to the fuel tank hatch. Might be an issue for someone if Sig no longer stocks them.

RE: SIG komander cowl??

I don't know which I would have built if the Kommander were available. The Kavalier main gear will probably last longer even though I like wire gears better.

Do you still have a Kommander?

I always wanted to build a Kommander and do it up in a late 60's Navy scheme. Unfortunately they were discontinued before I was old enough (had enough $$) to get into the hobby.

RE: SIG komander cowl??

Never had a problem with the Komander gear legs when flying off a decent flying field. They'd rake back a bit after a few grass landings but that was easy enough to straighten. My first Komander died on its first flight thanks to a deadstick in high winds. The second was sold after 3 years of heavy flying and some pretty bad fuel creep under the covering. The third was sold four years ago. I was flying off a cow pasture then, and had changed the landing gear to a dural blank mounted on the fuselage after I had cartwheeled because of catching one of the gearlegs in a gopher hold on landing.

My brother has a Komander Mk I kit in his basement that I just might take from him one day.

RE: SIG komander cowl??

OK...Thats it....next project is a Kommander MkIII:

Low drag symmetrical airfoil wing with bigger ailerons
Bigger built up stick vertical stab and rudder
Built up stick stab reworked to move elevator hinge line forward
Move elevator down in fuse to reduce pitch coupling
OS .91FX
Retractable gear

I have a buddy with a foam cutting rig that will cut cores, I can carve a plug and make a nice fiberglass cowl...

Construction begins as soon as my Little Toni Arf is done.

What do you think?

Adrian, I have only one thing to say to you, PICTURES!! That would be a very worthy project. Well worth the effort. Just share it with the rest of us SIG fans. Good luck with it.

Sport Flyer,

I thought they were yours from your comments here and on the website. Those are very nice looking planes.
