Side Mounting Engine Question
This winter I plan on trying to modify my 4*120 to side mount the engine and enclose it in a cowl. What are the principal concerns/considerations when performing such an operation? Any tips/advice would be appreciated! Carlton Campbell

Side mounting is basically the same as you have it mounted now. If you are going to use a pitts type muffler, you need to make holes in the cowl for exhaust exit. You might have to reconfigure your throttle pushrod and fuel tank lines. Depending on the type of motor mount that you are using you may just be able to remove it and turn it 90 degrees. If you are using the Sig mounts you will probally have to redrill the mounting holes. With a cowled engine, cooling is always the main concern. Good Luck, Dave

I mounted the engine in my 4*40 at about 45 degrees so the muffler would clear the side of the plane and then build the cowl around it. Here what it looks like.

This may not be a problem, but if you are using the standard muffler, make sure it will clear the gear. The 4* probably has a nose long enough so this won't be a problem, but it never hurts to check.
I side/angle mounted a .91 in a 4*60 modified and cowled. Worked great. Turned out fast. The muffler shown is a Performance Specialties Ultra Thrust tuned muffler. |

it also depends what engine you want to use.
a standard 2 stroke carb..simple with a rear need ..depending on how the intake barb sits. you might wanna rought the line a little differnent to minimize the bends of the fuel line. |
