Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
hey,
I just recieved a Tower Hobbies uproar 60 for christmas and since I have a habbit of rushing through planes I'm gunna start a build thread to maybe help slow me down. And for any questions I might have along the way. Luckily I also got a drafting table so I wont be working on the floor again. So far the plane is looking pretty good. The packaging was pretty good all the wood held togethor with rubberbands. So far the Instructions have not been even the slightest step, This bieng my second kit It will probably be a little bit harder because they skip a lot of steps that people with more expierience would know. I'v only got the stabalizer done and am starting on the aelerions. Here are the pics http://www.rcuniverse.com/gallery/ga...s/lg-11392.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabalizer2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tabalizer3.jpg |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I am also building this plane. I'm almost finished covering it. This is my second kit, my first was a Great Planes PT-60. I started my Uproar in June. Some days I spent several hours on it; some weeks I did not touch it at all. Spend a little extra time on the wing center section to be sure it comes out straight. Mine is slightly off which put a slight twist in the fuselage. I can compensate for my mistake when I install the tail feathers but wish I had been more careful.
I was taking pictures of the build. My house was burglarized in October and my digital camera and computer were taken. All of my airplane photos are gone. |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
well I guess im the only one who is interested in this plane, o well i gues all keep the thread going for others if they ever get the plane.
Over the past few days I'v built the Elevators, stab, rudder, fin, and aeleroins. The CA glue is drying a bit to fast for me so i think im giong to start using the epoxy. here are some pics of the progress.. *note, for all the future people, be careful when bulding the aeleroin. be sure to pin the wood down to the sheet or else it will trick ya. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...eraeleroin.jpg |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
looking good lets see the fuse and wings lol!
|
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
DON'T use epoxy! It's too heavy. Use a wood glue (many makers). That will give you very strong joints and time to get things positioned correctly.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I'm finishing a Dazzler kit and I'm told that it is nearly identical to the uproar. I just realized a mistake that I made. If the elevator halfs are connected with a torque rod like they are in the Dazzler, then there has to be a cut-out in the rudder to make room for it. I didn't find this out until after I had the rudder covered. The cut-out is in the plans, but it's easy to miss. Kit's looking good.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
alright thanx Im test fitting all the parts before I start to cover it. I probably woulda done the same thing,
anyways. I dont know how much im giong to get done today seeing as how i need a 13/64 in. drill bit, and a 1/4 in tap (i dont have either) but ill see if i can get to the hardware store |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Hi nitrobasher
I built this model 5 years ago. It came out heavy plane the rudder was modified ( bigger ) in order to do nice 3D you will need not less than .91 engine 2C . 4C are to heavy for this model. Make sure that you align the wings to the fuselage. You will like this model but be careful it is unstable on normal flight! It likes to do maneuvers no long straight flights Dov |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I just read that the wing is removable on the 60. Can anyone post a pic, or send it to me, of how it is attached or comes off? I looked at the manual Tower has online but it doesn't show how they are removed.
The only reason I didn't get a 40 was the wings don't come off. Thanks. |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
through the middle of the plane is a aluminum pole (hollow). It sticks out both sides of the airplane and when you want to attach the wings you slide them on to each side of the pole and screw em in with a nylon bolt...
update. I got most of the right wing done and it was pretty easy. except for the shear webs, I had trouble fitting them into the right space, if anyone has any advice please help me. thanx pics tommorow of the progress** |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
When I was building my wings I asked about the shear webs. I thought they had to fit between the spars and completely fill the space between the ribs. They actually glue to the front of the spars, so the length is not super critical. And, the info I got was that they do not have to completely fill the space between the ribs. Once I had that info, they were pretty easy.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Thanks Nitrobasher, I was thinking it may have been like the SSE. So it's actually more like the large scale planes, the wing is bolted on to the tube and not onto the fuselage.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
sorry about the delay guys, Iv finished the first wing and moved onto the second. Ive been busy with new years and all that.
pics tommorow, I also noticed that i didnt have half of the fuse side, so i'm going to call up towers to see if theyll replace it. |

Hi Salty,
I've just ordered the kit with some Tower gift certificates I had gotten for Xmas. I don't have the kit yet, but it seems from the manual that the wings halves are mounted to the Fuselage with nylon bolts into the fuse not the wing tube. I'll let you know for sure when the kit arrives, but from what I can tell from the manual, it looks like its an aluminum tube with nylon bolts and two dowels which fasten to the fuselage. I don't see any real problem with this type of attachment. It should hold up just fine I would think. Courtesy of the Tower manual.... |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Wydah, you are correct. The aluminum joiner simply 'floats' in a cardboard tube through a bunch of ribs.
The nylon bolts go through the ribs in the wing center section and you put nuts on the inside. There's a removable hatch on top of the fuselage for access to the nuts and radio equipment. It's a pretty simple design and looks very sturdy. |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Thanks, for confirming the wing attachment method. Be sure to post pics of your plane when you get it finished up. Have you decide on a color scheme?
|
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Thanks Wydah for clearing that up for me. Like I said earlier the only reason I didn't get the 40 was the wings didn't come off. I like to take two or three planes with me when I go to the field, hard to do with the 40.
I think I'll have to get one of those kits and start a build. But then I have so many kits where do I start? ;) |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I finished covering my Uproar last weekend. I covered the fuselage and wing center section in white Ultracote. I used purple pearl Ultracote for the wing panels, tail feathers, and all control surfaces. I ran a white stripe that's the width of two rib bays from about 2 inches under the leading edge, over the top, and to the trailing edge of each wing.
The purple really just looks black from a distance but it looks really good up close. "Everyone" seems to have planes that are red, blue, yellow, white, or orange. My camera was taken in a burglary so I cannot post a photo. |

Hi Nitrobasher,
Any pics of your build? I just received mine on Friday. I've got the Tail sections competed, and am now just starting the wings. The tail took a bit longer than I figured. With it being constructed totally with sticks it took a while to complete. Got a flight pack on the way from Servocity. What are you guys using for servos? Thought I would go with Hitec 475's for Ailerons, and Elevator, with a 635 on the rudder. That should be a decent setup I would think. So far it seems like a nice clean build and I expect it to perform well. Will update you on my progress. If your done please share your pics with the rest of us. |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I'm installing Hitec HS-425s in mine. I hope they're enough. The instructions recommend 'standard' servos.
I modified the design of my ailerons slightly. I made the angle at the root end 45 degrees, like the tip end, to mke the cuts easier. On everything else I've stayed as close as possible to the plans. I have not made a final decision on the engine yet. I have two to choose from, an ASP 61 two stroke and an OS 91 four stroke. The OS has never been run, the ASP has about 20 minutes of bench running. The weight of the engines (with muffler) is very close to the same, so choosing one based on what it needs to balance doesn't help much. For this plane, does anyone have a strong preference regarding the two/four stroke choice? |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Dov,
Just curious if you've tried 3D with the Uproar 60? Would I be crazy to try a GMS 1.20 on this plane? -Les |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
I would consider a .90 two-stroke to be "normal" power for the Uproar 60, and 1.20 to be the first degree of over-powered--meaning slightly over-powered, but nothing outrageous. If by 3D you mean hovering, the Uproar can do it. If you mean the full repertoire of 3D, then you need a lighter plane, lots of side area, humungous control surfaces and extreme throws. The Uproar 60 with GMS 1.20 would give you a lot of fun, as a classic Fun Fly model.

Hi,
I've just finished mine a couple of weeks ago. I don't plan to do any 3D, just all around fun fly type flying. Still waiting for the opportunity to maiden it. The weather has just not been cooperating. I'm using a Tower .75 engine. My plane came out a bit on the heavy side at 8.5lbs. I added a canopy, wheelpants, and sheeted in the first two root rib bays of the wings. With the .75 engine/muffler and the battery/Rx located as far back as practical (just behind the wing center section), I still needed 2 - 3 oz of lead in the tail section right under the servo mounting locations. Seems like a great little kit for the $49 Tower price. Can't wait to see how it flies. Good luck with yours. Be sure to let us know how the 1.20 works out if you decide to go that route. Regards, |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
Hi,
The Uproar 60 is my first kit, and so far, it has gone together very nicely. I have it almost ready for covering, but I wonder if I should substitute metal bolts for the nylon wing attachment bolts. They do seem kind of wimpy. Also, I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to cover the vertical and horizontal stabs before attaching them to the fuselage. Any comments/recommendations? |
RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 60 build
The nylon bolts are more than strong enough for the task. Nylon wing retainer bolts are used on 1/4 scale and 1/3 scale planes. Steel or even aluminum would add unnecessary weight. One of the easy weight-saving tricks with most ARFs is to take out the metal bolts/screws/tee-nuts and replace them with nylon fasteners and threaded wood blocks. The only nylon fasteners I've ever had break off were on the landing gear, in situations where they were designed to release the gear to avoid damage to the fuselage.
If it were me, I'd cover the tailfeathers before gluing them to the fuselage. Saves lots of time and maneuvering. |
