I made a tapered shim from 1/4" maple ply to angle the gear back a little

Brilliant!

I'm going to use a shim to angle the gear forward a degree or two to lessen the threat of a nose over.

I'm thinking of adding a pipe to this engine in the future and my muffler is hanging pretty low with the extention......

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

The Four Stars are generally not bad about nosing over unless they are nose heavy

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

My main gear is not in the stock location. I put gear out on the wings mounted to hardwood blocks just forward of the main spar. At that location I could see a landing in the grass off of the runway causing a nose over.

w8ye 01-28-2009 04:26 PM

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

The closer to the main spar the easier they are to land but also they tend to be more prone to nose over the closer to the main spar the gear is

The sweet spot is the leading edge of the wing.

I put the tapered side of the regular gear to the front with the shim underneath the mount. The wheels were still in front of the sweet spot but it landed good.

Yes, build it to fly, not to crash.
lite flys right.

i've got the left wing pretty much done. i have to sand out the area for the dihedral brace, but otherwise its done. I'll take pictures when i get home. What kind of glue did you guys use to glue the wing tip on? I know some of you made your own, but did anyone use the die cut one provided in the kit?

i used thick CA......

godofcable 01-29-2009 09:05 AM

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

ok, cool. I used the same, and then clamped it. it should be nice and dry when i get home. My goal for tonight is to get this wing finished off, and get a jump start on the other wing. I'm sure glad i listened to a very wise man and used wax paper. It was almost like i already covered the wing, it was stuck to the wax paper all over. I pulled off as much as i could, and the rest came off with very light sanding. No biggie. But imagine how bad it would have been if those were the plans it was stuck to!!![:-][:-][:-]

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

If you've got that much of the wax paper stuck to the wood, then it might be an indication that you're using too much CA and it's running down between the wood and the paper. Not a real big deal until you have to sand that CA soaked wood and it is hard as a rock!

Here's another tip you'll thank me for someday- when you're working with CA, have a small fan off to one side blowing across your work area. Some people develop an allergy to the fumes after awhile and can't use the stuff anymore.

Did you get your engine?

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

yeah...a fan would be a great idea......your eyes will thanks you

i forgot the wax paper.....only got stuck one or two tiny spots though.....i just used a little thin to glue the parts then went over everything with thick later.......

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

I should have used a dab to get the parts to stick at first, because i ended up going over them again anyway after I took the wing off the board.

I picked up the engine on Saturday. I was up there for a B-day party and swung by Dave's house afterward. I've got the conversion kit already as well, and I picked up the larger carb last summer. I will probably have some questions for you when that time comes too. Still haven't decided which prop to start with. Jag says anything from a 16x8 to a 20x10 I think, but where to start? and what kind of clearance am i going to have...all questions I have to figure out when i get there.

I stopped at the new hobby shop in Chenango Bridge. He has decent prices on stuff. Haven't priced glow fuel though. I'm stopping there today for some weights for my kids pinewood derby car, so I'll find out.

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

I'll bet my Giant Super Sportster is similar to your 4*120 and I found that a 16x10 prop worked the best. I think I tried an 18x6 on the first flight and it barely had enough forward speed to stay in the air. So I'd try the 16x10 at first, you've seen my Super Sportster fly so you know you'd have at least that level of performance for the first flight. Plus the 16" prop will help with any clearance issues you might have.

I didn't realize there was a new shop in Chenango Bridge, tell me more!

Here are pictures of the completed left wing. Well almost. I need to do the dihedral brace.

Looks great. I don't use much c/a anymore. I find it is hard to work with and I just like the wood glue the best. I still use epoxy and Gorilla glue. Love it for hinge points.

I have been using Titebond II but went to the store and all they had was Probond, It seems to work well also.

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

Well, I also use Tightbond 2, but not for everything. I'm going to stick with the medium and thick CA for the other wing. I'd hate to have one wing weigh more than the other because of the glue. When i get to the fuselage, I'll use more tightbond.

started the right wing last night. Pictures will be up in a few hours.

RE: 4*120 Build Thread

If Your going to use Tightbond remember to keep things clamped down or weighted down for at least one hour.

Hey guys. No action for a couple of weeks on here. Whats everybody doing, are you all done???

Well I guess I'm just as guilty. I've slowly been working on the right wing. A lot going on right now with work and all. I just came upstairs from sheeting the bottom sections of wing, next step is to cut off the excess spars and sheeting and sand her smooth. I'll post those pics when I'm done with it in a day or two.

gorilla glue makes a wood glue now. its pretty cheap (affordable) and the bottle says its water resistant. ive built my plane only using that and epoxy. its pretty good stuff, and doesnt require as much clamping. I always wondered how much an ounce of wood glue weighs once its dry. I am almost done my seniorita, and have got about 3/4 of a bottle in it now...
