Hog-Bipe Farmer
 

After reading several post on the hog bipe I couldn't wait to find one. I was lucky enough to find one at a local swap meet. I have visited fubarhill and read all the advise on what to change and not to change. I plan on putting a saito 100 in the front but would like to find a cowl to cover it. Any suggestions on were to find one that will fit. I also like the ideal of the two servos in the wing. Is this two in each wing or just two on the bottom wing? Has anyone tried two in each wing or is this needed? I'm new to tail draggers, I like the sound of moving the gear forward. Not real clear on the distance. Is the measure from the nose or the front of the wing? With the saito 100 will I need to add much weight to the tail if any? I plane to balance with the radio gear if possible. Any comments or advise would be appreciated.

Two servos in the bottom wing only should be fine.

I moved the landing gear foward by 1/2 inch and have had no problems with nosing over on a grass field. Just be sure to hold up elevator when starting to taxi.

My Hog has a Saito .91 and balanced perfectly without adding weight. The battery is in the forward compartment under the fuel tank and the receiver is in the main compartment just behind the battery. Your Saito 1.00 should weigh about the same, so I doubt that you will need to add weight. With a cowl you may find that the battery and receiver will need to be placed further aft.

I needed to add down thrust and right thrust to the engine mount to improve flight characteristics. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I have a Saito 100 in mine and it balanced fine with the battery behind the fuel tank. I didn't use a cowl so no help there, sorry. My main gear is in the stock location requiring up elevator for taxiing in grass. I definitely recommend the 2 servos in the bottom wing setup.

This plane is a handful on the ground. You will want to move gear forward 1/4"-1/2". I left mine stock until they got ripped off. Left in stock position I had to taxi and take off with full up or plane would nose over. Moved it to front 1/4" and what a difference, works great. The more you move up the more stable it is on takeoff and taxi but will start to bounce real bad on landing.

I made a cowl from balsa and side mounted engine. make a ring to match spinner, glue to spinner back plate with CA and mount your engine. Then start gluing balsa back to firewall. Remove engine when there is enough pieces to keep cowl straight. Carve, plane and sand to shape. Make sure to leave enough room to remove engine.

If you want to 3D you'll need to add some rudder at least 3/4". Mine will hold a knife edge but won't knife edge loop.

Definitely use the two servo option

You'll have good fun with this plane.

Stan's Fibertech has cowls for the Hog Bipe. I tried to upload a pic of mine so we'll see how that went.

I tried some fiber glass work for gear doors on my Giant
P-51 a few years ago. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought
I would. I have just purchased a sheet of blue siding foam to
make some cowls. Do a little research here & you will find
plenty of info. the nice thing about FG is that it's cheap to
work with. If you screw one up just do it again.
