RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
Well my electric was a RTF, and I just recently lost it to the wind and a chain link fence, so atleast now it wouldnt be my first destroyed plane.
I will be getting instruction starting Tuesday using the club trainer (since I'm not a member, yet, I might not get too if they have a busy night) But I dont plan on building this and heading out to some field and trying it myself! Ken, when you cover, do you have all of your hinged surfaces glued together already before you cover? If so, is that easy enough to do as a beginner? |

KC,
Yes, I attach all of the control surfaces and then I will cover them. Start off with sealing the gap first, and then cover the rest of the area. It's not any harder doing it this way than coverin them and attaching them. Look at the pictures and you'll get an idea of what to do. Ken |
RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
KC: That's a pretty neat trick! I think I will try that on my next build.
|
RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
I have always covered the pieces separately, and then hinged them. What I think would be the best way, is to cover the hidden areas first, install the hinges and attach the surfaces, then cover the remaining areas. What this buys you is complete coverage, smooth operating hinged surfaces, and most importantly, if using CA hinges, no CA dribbled all over the finished monokote. If I am using hinge points, I definitely do all the covering before assembly.

RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
krossk speaks the truth on this matter!:D

RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
Hhaha, a new kit wouldn't do me any good if I wasn't alive to build it :P

RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
SIG to the rescue, what a way to redeem themselves. They offered to eat half the cost of Overnight Saturday delivery. (I really want this wing kit so I asked them to just overnight it to me, I didn't ask them to eat the cost). As well, they are doing the usual, crediting me for my cost to ship the fuse kit back to them.
Makes me feel mostly better about the whole situation! |
RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
It's been my experience that Sig will go the extra mile to take care of their customers. From your experience it sounds like they are still doing that
Ken |
RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
I have never heard anyone complain about Sig kits. I've built a few, and they were all a pleasure. Never had to deal with customer service, but it sounds like they are on the ball.

RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
Had to work all day today, but the kit did arrive, and its the right one this time!!
I'll get started on it right away tommorow after church! |
RE: First Kit Build - Sig Somethin Extra
Maidened mine today. GMS 47 and APC 11-6. I left the tail wires off, but it's nose heavy, so I'll be adding them. This one is a little weak in the rudder department for KE, but that should improve with the cg shift. It's just ahead of the spar with a full tank. Noticeable down required for inverted flight. The model really moves out, and slow rolls are the best. It's light enough that I have unlimited vertical, and it hovers very well. Harriers are an excercise in controlling the wing rock, and it won't flat spin. I pranged it on the last flight and ripped the gear off it. I was coming in for a low pass and got 2 inches too low. The left wing also took a pretty good whack. It skipped like a rock on a lake. If the engine hadn't quit I'd have kept going. The prop was shortened by about 3" per blade. The coolest part of this flight is that my wife was there to see the whole thing. I was showing off for her, and she really got a show. Remember I said i like the simple color schemes because I knew I would break it? Well, I didn't think it would be so soon.:D

Not24, congrats on the maiden, too bad you were just a touch too low, I assume all the damage is fixable?
As for my build, I got the other wing built and the wings trued up to the side of the fuse. Heres the pics! |

"sigh" I remember my SE. It was a wonderful plane to build and fly. But, alas it was lost to a power line that was over the runway at a flying field I was invited to. Havent flown there since. But anyway here is a picture of it.

dragonov3: wow man, sorry to hear about your SE, did it cause alot of sparks? or did it just get torn up?
As for my plane, I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted to today, but here's the progress. I screwed up on F7 and put it in backwards, so I had to drill new holes thru it and then cover/patch the other 2 holes, seems to be alright otherwise :) Beginners night at one of the local clubs tommorow, so I won't get any progress done tommorow probably, but I hope to get some time in on their trainer!! |
