Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Could you please suggest an engine for my Tower Uproar 40 kit?
E, i must mention that i want an engine that has enough power for hovering! Thank you all & sorry for any engine that is not listed, just mention your option! |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Hey, I usally don't chat on RCU but this one caught my eye. I would strongly suggest the ThunderTiger Pro .46. This is a perfect match with an incredibly reliable, strong, and cheap motor. It will have great pull-out power with an APC 12.25x3.75. I just finished my third uproar with the modifications that I've incorperated over the last 8 yrs of flying the Uproar. The other reason I suggest the Thunder Tiger Pro 46 is it's midrange with no lag, it's perfect! I can post some pics of my lastest with the mods for 3Ding if you'd like. God Bless, Jay

Here's some pics. I modified the ailerons so there is more air over them. I put a dorsal fin on it because the tail seemed to be to washy for my liking. I put counter balances on the elevator and rudder and squared them up. To much elevator makes it high speed stall and spin, so be careful with the throw, it recovers as soon as you let go of the stick, though. I also put gates on the wing tips. The thought here was too give it better knife edge capability but that will never happen. I could not get it to knife edge without and exteme coupling problem, however it did give the plane more stability and one wickedly flat inverted spin, almost climbing at full throttle! It wouldn't do a good blender but if you stand the plane on end and shove both sticks to the right or left it would lock in to the coolest flat spin ever. I love this plane and will always have one in my hangar, it's also great on water with .20 size floats.

My choice wasnt in your list: OS .32SX. Light. Screamer. Reliable as all get out. HS225MG servos for all control surfaces. I would increase the rudder size from stock. I plan to do this with mine eventually. Mount the engine sideways. Will keep the plane a LOT cleaner.
For some reason RCU wont let me upload my picture. Guess I have to link to it on my site. BUGGER!!! http://fubar1.net/rcimages/UproarOne.jpg |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Those are some cool mods there, I have a Dazzler ARF (Hobbico version of the Uproar) that was crashed on maiden by another club member so I offered to fix it for him (A real nice elder man in my club) Well anyhow I fixed it and covered the repaires with some covering I had left from other projects and when I met him at the field with it he then told me to put some gear and an engine in it and it was payment for fixing it for him, He said it was too much for his old hands to handle so I put a old OS 46FX on it and the 46 is borderline too much power on it, I use a 12x4 and vertical is nonstop.

E,isn't it better to buy a cheap OS 40-46LA to try and then buy a better engine with bearings?Just a thought ofcourse. Also, your Uproar hovers with the TT on half throttle?Or what? RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Very good to hear this.
But, the 46FX descontinued and now they sell the 46 AX,pretty the same. :D:D |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Thunder Tiger 36 is more powerful than the plain bearing 40s and very light--11+ ozs--ideal for a plane this size and weight. Under 70 bucks from Radical RC. Try an 11x4 on it for vertical. Jim

RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
The TTPro is a good choice. I have a SuperTigre .45 ABC on mine. This plane just screams for a good BB ABC engine.
theradioflyer - is correct with his prop selection. A good BB ABC with a 12.25x3.75 APC is the perfect choice for this plan. I was reviewed in Airplane News with an OS46AX but the prop used was an 11x7. This plane has so much airfoil it will fly excellent at 40-50 MPH and just crys for a big flat prop for verticals. I can point mine up and on high rates spin at about 3 revolutions a second until it almost out of site. Don't have the hovering stuff down yet and its not a great design for 3-D as the verical surfaces a shy -- for 3-D it could also use a little more control surfaces -- but it one of my favorite fun flyers! |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
I have flown all of mine with the 46 LAs and it's A good match but maybe not A good choice for 3-D. I broke in an MDS 58 on an Up-Roar and when it finally broke in it was way too much power. The MDS engines have junk for A carb and don't like to run so don't even give them A thought. From what you are showing then the TT 46 is the best choice, we use them A lot for racing and it's A good engine. Cheap for what you are getting too.

RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Hey Kostas1, like Gray Bread said, it's cheap for what your getting. I have three Thunder Tiger pro 46s. My nine year old, and first, still runs great, that's what you get from a ball bearing engine. If you go cheap expect your motor to run great for three years and then have problems. What ever motor you chose make sure you don't go to cheap, you'll pay for it in the long run. Just my two or three or four cense:D

RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
I also have to say that this is a very light airplane with a beautifully thick and stable airfoil that makes it a wonderful plane to fly with no bad tendencies. Throttle back with a .46 and try things out with plenty of altitude. It lands like a dream. I have my C.G. at 6 1/8 inches off of the trailing edge forward, not from the leading edge, it makes it easier to measure. The Uproar is kind of touchy on the elevator at this point but if you use -60% expo you'll have no problem. I also balance my planes up side down, not right side up. This plane slows up so well that I usually land with the tail wheel first!

RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Oh, my Uproar has many flights with the .32SX engine. Will hover at around half throttle. Still playing with diff props for it. I have had good sucess with the APC 10X3 on my Pizza Box powered by a GMS .32 (also a very good screaming engine, by the way). I plan to try the APC10X3 on the Uproar this weekend. Will post results.
|
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Flies great with the APC 10X3! Wish I had found this prop sooner. Now I find I need to modify the vertical fin and/or rudder. Not sure whether to just increase the rudder size both in height and length and adding a counterbalance (easiest fix) or trim down the fin a bit, keep the rudder the same height adding a counterbalance and length.
Guess I need to see what others did with theirs. Definitely need more rudder tho! |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Counter balances will do wonders for the authority. Moving the balance point back helps also. Don't count on it doing knife edge, all of mine wouldn't!
|
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Not so concerned with it doing knife edges. In a hover tho, it has plenty of control authority fore and aft with the elevator but once it gets a few degrees yaw the rudder just wont recover it. Tail wont wag, it just hammerheads over.
Good thing is that since I got it in my head to re-do the rudder I also got the bug to return to building and dug out my mostly built Kaos and got back to work on it also. Finally figured out why I wasnt interested in building lately. I recently moved into a different apt. Got a pretty nice garage to build in but it is separated from the neighbor's garage by corrogated sheet metal. Needless to say any sounds from either garage sounds like its in the same garage. The neighbors teenaged kids (gangbanger types) hang out in their garage every time I go out to do some work on my planes. All I hear is them yakking in spanish, snorting speed, and non stop making the most gawdawful gagging, hawking, snorking, and spitting sounds. Sounds like a hayfever convention over there. I mean this is non-stop for hours. I assume its hours cos I can only take about an hour or so before I bail back upstairs and give it up for the day. Needless to say it very much detracts from any enjoyment of building. I plan to take my camcorder out there next time and record em. Rant over. |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
So,you all vote to the TT 46?
You know, all the engines i've tried so far are OS and YS 53FZ-S. So i am not sure if it good to try another company????What do you think? |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Kosta1, I really have three 46 pro's, My first is at least eight or nine yrs old and runs great with no maintance. My newest one has the new carb that has the needle tilted torward the back. I've run this one four times now and it has a ton of power but I'm still running it on the rich side. With the Thunder Power you get more bang for the buck. I heard years ago the the Thunder Power engines are designed by an engineer that let O.S. Just My2Cents:D

RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
I have a the TT46 and ST51. My 46 could not pull the 12.25x3.75, but the 51 just rips with the same prop. But I have seen another TT46 rip with that prop and the Tower muffler. I may have damaged mine on breakin, ran it sloppy rich. I'm not positive, but I thought the ST51 was a touch lighter. Both engines have been reliable and easy to tune. It looks like ST has gotten away from the bolt through muffler, I hate that setup. With some file work, it looks like the Tower muffler would fit the ST. Will try that some night.
theradioflyer and Fubar1- Those are both sweet looking planes! MikeB |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
WMB, Great Falls Montana! You Lucky SonOF aB, oooopps. That's my jealous side coming out! I have relatives that live in Bear Creek. I got a chance to get out there last year and soak it all in. I LOVE MONTANA:D
|
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
Yes,
me too,i don't like the ST setup. Let me ask you sth else. What do you prefer, the ST 51 or the TT 46? I haven't own any of them, nor i've seen them running! |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
It looks like ST redesigned the cylinder and muffler attaching method. Considering this, I would personally go with the ST over the TT. Mine has run flawless inverted and sideways. TT runs great, didn't have the muffler problems, but did not run flawless inverted or as much power. Like I said earlier, I may have broke it in wrong and that may account for it's less than standard performance. Both engines have been on my 4*40, inverted and sideways.
Monana is home for us. My great grandparents homesteaded at the base of the Big Belt mountains south of Cascade. Spent a lot of time there as a kid and ended up moving to Great Falls. Great place for the kids to just run around and not watch tv. MikeB |
RE: Tower Uproar 40 kit needs and engine!
But this setup counts on weight, right?
