RE: Which Cub to build
After re-reading my post, as well as looking at Sig and BUSA'a info on the J-3, a .91 most likely will fly the plane okay. I'd really like to see one knife edge with a .91, and maybe a 2-stroke would do it. I don't even consider 2-stroke glow engines for this plane, a Cub just needs a 4-stroke or gas.....my own prejudice. Plus, a Cub doesn't look right with a smaller than scale prop, and a .91 just won't turn a 18 incher very well. There are three 1/4 scale Cubs in our club, all with either a 1.20 or G-26 (one is clipped wing). I know what kind of performance they have, which is plenty, but I think I'd want that much, because you can cruise at such low settings, but have plenty on reserve.
Edwin-- take a long look at your L-4 plans when you get them, see what you think about the top of the center section, and modifying it for a full greenhouse. I'll be very interested in your build pics. My BUSA Cub project is down my list a bit, got several WWI projects and a BirdDog ahead of it. Unless, of course, I wrap my 1/5 scale around a fence post or tree[&o]. The side outline on the BUSA L-4 windows is pretty close. I have the fortune of a recently restored full scale at a nearby grass strip, and I've measured it and compared to BUSA's plans. I don't know what it is about the L-4, or J-3 for that matter, but I'll always have one in my hangar. |
RE: Which Cub to build
Well it wouldnt hurt to try out the .91fs. Its what I used on a world models 1/5 arf I got for a real good deal. At 1/3 throttle it looked and sounded so real it just sticks in your mind. If I end up buying a engine it might be the saito 1.00, sounds like a good balance. My favorite menuvers were just idling back and hanging in the wind and side slipping down the runway. Nothing looks finer than a cub side slippin to the centerline. <g>
And will do, khodges. Edwin |
RE: Which Cub to build
I'm really considering the Balsa USA 1/4 scale for my winter project. I will have to decide on an engine tho. I really would like to go gas... Is a 26cc gona be enough? I would like to fly it scale but I would like to have a bit more when I wanted... Maybe a 32?

RE: Which Cub to build
I'm thinking about using the new Saito 1.25 in my Sig 1/4 scale Cub. Should have power to spare.

RE: Which Cub to build
Question to all you Cub enthusiasts...I want the most scale kit I can find. Is it the Balsa USA 1/4, the Sig 1/4 or the Sig 1/5. I'm thinking it's the Sig 1/5.
2nd question...Any idea who has the most scale plans available for a scratch build project. Thanks for your help. |
RE: Which Cub to build
Sig 1/5 scale will do fine. As for plans, you can try Wendell Hostettler. They list a 30% scale J3 which you can scale the plans down if you wish.....
http://www.aero-sports.com/whplans/cub.html There are probably other sources for plans, but this one came to mind. Scott |
RE: Which Cub to build
I have the Sig Cub. The WS is 85". powered by a Gimini ll 1.60. the weight without fuel is 16 lbs. I have been flying it with a 16 X 8 Dynathrust. It flys ok but am looking for more speed and climb ratio. What can I use for a prop that will do the tric? Tks Ooops, I entered the Q twice. sorry.

RE: Which Cub to build
I got my BUSA kit and L-4 plans yesterday. Now I changed my mind. I'll build the kit up stock J-3 and cut out parts to build the L-4 at the same time. Really like both of them. Will start in a couple months, have to get over a little health issue first.

Been doing some research on the mechanism that holds the upper window door open. Cant find any pictures anywhere on this. Can somebody enlighten me?

It's a simple latch; I had a picture of it but lost the hard drive temporarily. I made a simple tab for my plane that just rotates on a screw mounted in the spar, it holds the window open even in flight, if I want. You may also want to consider a latch to hold the window closed. Mine flapped in the propwash, so I made a couple of tabs for the door mechanism that latch the window closed as well as the door. You can still unlatch the window to open it without unlatching the door.
1st pic is the tab to hold the window open, the others hold it closed: |

Exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for the info. I saw the engine plans on the cub den, think I'm gonna do that too.
