RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Hi flycfii, I am getting very close to finishing my mini plane I will try to attach some pics, it has moved on a little since the pics. I expect to have it finished in about a month. This is a month of someone with three children a.l under 6. Not bad going. All that is required is rx setup. Decals, wheel pants. Got a great tail wheel graupner.

here's a couple pics of my mini. i was going with a clear covering with insignia blue over the sheeted parts so you could see through to the bones of it, but after flying a time or two, i decided it was a little difficult to see the orientation of it well enough. so i stripped her and am now going with john deere colors and custom cut decals from extra covering material. i cut out the logos printed out from my computer and glued them to the backing on the covering then took an exacto knife to it to cut them out. they actually turned out pretty nice. this is all i have covered so far. the wings will be yellow with the green trim and logos as well. i wish i could get ahold of some green paint to match the moneykote, but oh well. the cowl and wheel pants will be yellow.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
hi, I need to buy some stuff.
Where can I find the N-Struts? in the MINI PLANE CABANE STRUT SET??? [6 PCS TOTAL/KIT] What is the differences between the HARDWARE PK #2 SMITH MINI PLANE-MACHINE PACKED and the HAND PACKED? http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmar...Kit_20Parts_01 |
RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
I just got this kit, and plan to convert it to electric. I know others have done the conversion, and wondered if any one has any recommendations? My biggest concern is that the cabane struts mount right where I need to put the battery hatch. I would really love to know how others solved this problem.

They are just straight pieces of wire and this brass sheet. You have to bend the wire yourself, cut the mounting plates from brass, and then bind and solder. The shape is done with balsa glued on, filled, sanded, and them glassed. The patterns are on the plans, but you will need to make them in position on your wings to get a perfect fit. Keep an incidence meter handy to keep it all straight! |
RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Rooster, I just saw your posts. I measured with a 2200 3S flightmax battery and the battery compartment is very tight. How do you get everything connected in such a small space?
|
RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Hi Kaziki, The two batteries will fit fine...the wires that connect to the esc are long enough so that they can be connected to the Y harness outside the fuse. When the batteries are connected its just a simple case of tucking the wires into the fuse to allow the batteries to push all the way in, you will see in my pics that there is a a gap between the alloy angles...this is where I tuck the battery wires when inserting the batteries. There is ample room for the batteries to fit between the undercarriage wires, the limiting factor is the length of batteries. Having said that when the batteries are inserted and the wires are tucked neatly there is no problem....the problem arises when you insert your batteries without neatly tucking the wires as a big ball of wire under the batteries will prevent the batteries from full inserting. I hope this helps :)

Been a little quite on this thread, so thought I would provide an update - Got all my servos mounted and control rods. Just have to make a couple hatch covers and ready for covering. Project has been on/off for the last two years so getting excited to finish her up.
Wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Marko |

Hey guys...hope you are all busy building or flying. Making some progress on my SMP. Fuse is almost completely covered and starting wings. Some pics for evidence.....

Nice job! I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks Roger. Will gets some more pics up as I progress.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Lookin' good, rc! I do love the building season, but haven't had time to heat up the shop lately :(

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Marko,
Your Smith is looking good. I can't remember (and too lazy to go looking) what covering material are you using. |
RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Thanks Dope Fiend!
Hi Rick, Good to hear you back on this thread! I am using good old Monokote for the main parts of my little SMP. The bottom of the fuse and tail feathers are done in Ultracote black and white checker film, as will be the lower wing. Man....much easier than the old days of having to cut those little squares out!!! Have been using Monokote for many years now and prefer it over other films, maybe just cause I am used to it. However, I just about popped a gasket trying to do the top section of fuse in one piece with the red. Not sure if I was just having a bad night, but that darn red does not seem to work with the heat like the other colours. I recall having a similar experience last time I used red a few years back. Usually I am able to get it pretty tight and wrinkle free prior to using the iron or heat gun for a nice finish, but this piece was not co-operating with heat. It did turn out good in the end, but caused much frustration. Tried last night to cover the headrest piece, but I could not get it to where I was entirely satisfied, so am going to have to paint it. No biggie as have to paint the cowl and pants anyways, but thought I would try this piece in covering for kicks, but no luck. BTW - The WACO will get treated to fabric!!! No Monokote for it! So how is your Pro coming along? Any progress? Mine is still in the container it came in from the manufacturer..... aka "The Box". Cheers, Marko |

Marko,
Nothing wrong with doing up the Smith with MonoKote. It’s crazy but I still do my squares the old way. Cut them out and put them on one at a time. My old Smith certainly was/is not scale. Happily retired and taking it easy as a hanger queen. Lots of sentimental value in that thing for me. It was just a strait up good sport plane. I loved flying it. Don’t misinterpret that to mean it was easy to fly. It made a better pilot of me for sure. None the less it was a blast to fly. When you can perfect getting this plane off the ground at about 1/3 throttle without weaving all over the place you can call yourself a tail dragger pilot. I remember in the early days I would hammer the throttle and hang on till it was in the air. If you have seen the video’s of me and mine - you know I did tame that process down to be very nice and scale like. The “Pro” is still untouched. There have been many projects pass by that fuse though. It still sits at the back/side of the table reminding me every time I go in there. It will be covered with “SolorTex”. I think that’s what they call it. Iron on fabric from Balsa USA. Like you, when I do the Waco, it will be cloth and paint. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing pictures of yours all dressed out and ready to go. Maybe you can get some video of it once it’s flying? Just because I can- here is a couple more pictures of mine. In the silver was about 1985 when I first finished it. In yellow was around 2008 long after I recovered it (1990 or so). The third is at a fly in pictured with my son’s decathlon. |
