RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Tom,
Great idea on gluing the Monokote to the pattern. I'll have to do that next time - should save some time for sure. Your covering job came out great - I hope it flies as good as it looks. Uncle Sam would be perfect for a pilot! |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Uncle Sam... that's gonna be great!:D

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Status update...
I'm almost done!! So close I can almost taste it. I need to iron down the edges of the covering on the wing, install the aileron control horns, connect the aileron push rods, balance both side to side and front to back. After that, I think all that's left is programming the transmitter. I checked the weight again tonight. Right now she's at 9 1/4 lbs. I will probably drop a few ounces from the nose when I balance her because I added a second receiver battery pack in the nose. (I now have two 1100 mah nicad packs in parallel. I really don't like how low the voltage drops when moving multiple Spektrum servos at the same time! I suspect that had something to do with the loss of my Tiger 2.) I have a heavy brass prop nut on the nose under the spinner, which I'll probably end up removing. However, I'm beat for today. Gonna get a good nights sleep, go fly my SuperStar and Stryker tomorrow, then finish her up this week and do the maiden next weekend. (Assuming I don't get too anxious and slip out early from work one day this week!!) -- Tom |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Well, it was a short day at the flying field!! I got up feeling pretty good this morning, so I took a few hours to finish everything up. Took her out to the field. Engine started up on the second flip. Thought that was a good sign! Played around and got the engine running good. Then taxied her out onto the runway and did my takeoff run. Came up to speed great! After one bounce, she took off, then started banking to the left, back toward the flight line. And here's where it went south!! I over corrected and she rolled onto her right side, came down and caught a wingtip into the ground and she did a very tight cartwheel. I can now say with authority that the nylon wing bolts did NOT shear off and save my fuse! The fuse is now in two big (and a few small) pieces. The engine mount DID do its job and broke both beams to save the engine. (I think! Still need to check it out thoroughly.) The fuse broke right behind the canopy, which I believe is a known weak spot. The good news is that the wing is almost completely intact! About five minutes worth of work and the wing would be flyable again. Although there's a ding in the leading edge I'm going to have to strip covering, fill and recover. I figure about an hour of work total to get the wing redone. So, I'm taking a breather for a bit, then I'll get to work on getting her fixed back up. Still don't know how I'm going to rejoin the fuse, but it should be too difficult. I just want to avoid adding too much weight back there. My friend was shooting video with my camcorder and captured the crash. I'll post a link as soon as I figure out how to get it transferred to the computer and uploaded somewhere. -- Tom |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Oh man! What a bummer [:o] I'm sorry to hear about your crash. Hopefully you can get her fixed again and have a successful maiden.
If the ding in the wing isn't real bad, you can try injecting some water into the wood under the covering with a needle and heating it with the covering iron. That will make the wood swell back into shape. Also, when you glue the fuse back together (hopefully it was a clean break), you can glass over the joint with fiberglass to make it strong. I've done that before with good success. I wouldn't worry too much about adding a little weight there since it's not that far back. |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Thanks!!
Great idea on the water injection! I do woodworking as another hobby and should have thought about water raising the grain. That ding isn't bad at all. Only about 1/4 inch deep, so that idea might work well. As for the fuse, unfortunately, it wasn't a clean break. However, I think I can trim it up, splice in some replacement stock and then maybe glass those joints. Another good idea. -- Tom |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Hi Tessex
Don t dispair , I ve already broken my Tiger , not once , but twice . The whole section behind the canopy is new . All 4 sections were rebuilt , and I reinforced it with fiberglass . I did it on my third flight . fortunatly I was on vaccation at the time and had it back in the air 12 HRS later . All was pilot error , came in too slow . my wing was in great shape , and my nylon bolts sheard off . my greatest worry was keeping it straight . Unlike ARFs we have plan,s and thats exactly what I used to make sure that it came out straight I m not a very good flyer , so makeing repairs is like second nature to me :):):):) . My Tiger has about 100 flights on it now and Im still flying it . Ive now moved on to an ARF Mustang 40 with a 60 size engine . This is a prelude to my winter project , which is , the TF GIANT MUSTANG with a DA-50r [sm=biggrin.gif] . I ve learnt how to land very fast . When I m over the runway, I hit the flaps and kill the engine to idle . Lands like a butterfly , but it took a whole lot of practice, and never use my ailerons on landings , just rudder . The guys at the field told me to stop putting holes on the runway :):):):) My Tiger came out very heavy , at 10.8 LBS it has retracts , which are s.....t .Its covered in dope . I have an OS91 fx and it flys great with an APC 14x8 prop modified to 13 inch . I love flying it . Every time that I crash , I learnt something . Mike ;)[8D] |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Tom,
I'm sorry about the crash. It was heartbreaking to watch/record it. [sm=cry_smile.gif] (You know how much I love that plane!) Anyway, I know it will be flying-high soon. Take care friend. Love, Rita |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Hi guys, Im building the Tiger 60 too, the most important thing is that this is my first kit I do since Im in the hobby (4 years), I have 8 planes (glow and electrics) but all are ARF, this my first build, Im little nervous about, I started one month ago with the wing panels per instructiions, and I think Im in the rigth way,,,,

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Has there been any talk of a kit of the Tiger 120 ? I have a 4 Star 120 which I love but I like the looks of the Tigers better.
Another question, I have had a lot of troube with the nose gear bending on two non-Goldberg planes. The Sr Falcon has not bent. The one that came on my Nexstar was the worst, so I put in a Fults, which was a major disapointment. The upper shaft is stout (had to drill out the motor mount for it) but the two wires that come down to the wheel bend way too easily and not necesarily the same amount, but still an improvement over the stock part. I am thinking the Goldberg hardware is superior and you Tiger guys would know for sure. Thanks. |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
I have decided to make mine into a tail dragger, no nose gear!

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Well it has been awhile. sense checked in but the thread has been most helpful. I am just about finished with my Tiger 60. Went with a taildrager, and an os 61. I am working on my painting and covering skills that i can lter aply to scale kits. I have covered in Nelson and painting with the same. I used this before with my 1/4 scale cub and am still very impressed. I have just finished my paint schem on the ?Fuse and about to install the engine. Wings will be painted in the nexst day or two and i will be breaking in the engine and setting my control trims. Pictures will be forth coming. I am reallly happy withthe build, this is my 3rd kit and I think i will be ready for maiden this weekend.

Wow, what a great plane. Maiden flight went great. got about 5 flights out of here before I decided to put her awayfor the day and make sure nothing was vibrating lose and all held up. she is a kick to fly i am a newbie but this was easier than my trainer (pt 40) and definitly easier than my ultra slow cub (sig 1/4 CW) that needs lots of rudder. This is definatly a great next step ion becomeing a better flyier. My bench is empty for the first time sense i started this hoby in June. I am looking forward to my next build. And gaining my skills as aflyier on the Tiger.

Hi
Congragulations Mike |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Nice!
They are fun, aren't they? My T2 was a piece of cake to fly after my Avistar. |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Congrats on the maiden!! My T2 also flew great until I lost it over the trees. I have my T60 almost rebuilt. I picked up new servos today, I need to get them installed, finish up the hatch, install the batteries, fuel tank, spinner, re-balance, program in some differential in the TX, and she's ready to go. Weather permitting, I hope to get her up this weekend!!

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Congrats tagore! That's a nice looking paint job you did on your Tiger.
I flew mine for 5 tanks today as well - have about 25 or so flights so far. Was doing snap rolls and spins today and having a blast. My Tiger sure snaps fast for such a big wingspan! This is a very nice flying plane and the Magnum 91 is still going strong - woo hoo! Tom: Good to hear it's almost done. Good luck to you on the re-maiden. Make sure to put some expo on there with those huge control surfaces. |

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
hello everyone,i have been following this thread with great interest.i'm nearly finished with my tiger 60 deluxe was curious about the final weights some have come up with.mine is heavy at almost 11 lbs.it has retracts and an os 91 4 stroke, will be using 15
% cool power and a 13x8 zinger prop.any ideas or comments on how it will possibly fly,if at all thanks , freddy |
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
should fly great my weighed in at 9pounds and am using a os 61 and handles great for me i amjust free of my trainer so i don't want mmorem than i can handle, but his is a kick and myuch easer to fly than my trainer. Have fun
|
RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Okay!!! She's ready to go again!! Weighs in at 9 LBS 10 OZ, only 6 OZ more than before the crash, and 3 oz of that is additional weight for re-balancing! I've dialed in dual rates and differential for the control surfaces, so hopefully I can avoid a repeat! The weather is supposed to be a bit cool (low 50's), but no rain and practically no wind. So, assuming I can get to the field, I should be able to fly.

RE: Tiger 60 Build Thread
Woooohooooooo!!!! She flies!!
Had a hard time starting the engine today, finally resorted to the starter. She ran a bit rough, but I figured that'd work out. Taxied out and did my takeoff run. I did a downwind takeoff this time because I wanted to have the room afforded by the land dropping off right of the end of the runway. The engine was still running pretty rough and I really should have aborted, but got her in the air anyway. Got her out about 50 yards or so and decided to bring her back in. Did a 180 followed by a hard landing, broke the prop, but didn't see any other damage. (It turns out the broken prop must have bounced caught the fuse right below the engine, but that's only cosmetic.) When I put her back on the table, fuel was pouring out of the muffler. Obviously way too rich!! Changed the prop, closed the needle valve (four full turns!!) and opened her back up about three turns. Started her up, leaned her out until the speed started to drop, then richened up about a quarter turn. Much, much better running engine!! Did my take off run this time, and she took of just as pretty as can be!! Nice and straight. Got her up to altitude but had to put about 12 clicks of up elevator to get her flying level. Did a bunch of loops and rolls/spins. She flies great!!! On high rates, she rolls like she's on an axle with bearings!! The one problem I did find is that she's a pretty twitchy when coming in for landing. I think that's a result of chopping the dihedral. If I were to do it again, I'd only cut about 1/2 as much dihedral out of her. But I love the way she handles anyway!! And the twitchiness will just force me to become a better pilot! I do highly recommend to those who haven't flown yours yet to set up your dual rates and put some differential in the transmitter. After observing the behavior between my high and low rates, I think I had way too much throw the first time, which is what caused my crash. She spins so fast, I'm going to have to practice coming out of the spin so I can get the timing right to wind up right side up. -- Tom |
