GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

Just starting to build the Ultimate.
I have a Magnum FS52 fourstroke for it. The plans reccomend this size 4 stroke . Says unsupassed power, guess time will tell. LOL
Will post pics as the build goes.

I'm working on the same kit. Almost finished. Just have to make the fin
Are you going for the single aileron servo or double?
I'm using a 0.46AX or yhe FL-70.
Good luck

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

I have`nt decided which way to go on the alieron servos. Was it an easy mod? Did you use Micro or standard size servos?
I have the magnum FS 52 already, but we are having a big RC auction Sat so that could change. Hope to pick up a few used 4 strokes.
Good luck with your build, let us know how the maiden goes.

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

I guess I'm going with one standard or maybe high torque servo. Some say two is better and other say two is a crowd. According to greatplanes one will do.
Maybe this is a good thread to start a build log on the Bipe .40 from GP since I haven't found anything yet on this one.

I`m going with the one servo. Heard it works just fine.
Have`nt started the build yet. darn Cub is taken a little longer than I thought. But by this weekend. I am going to post pics and keep a build log here as I have`nt seen one yet on this plane yet. A couple of short reviews on manufacture web page.
Got any pics please post them.

Only the stab and the fin and we're off.
First wing was fun, second wing a little less fun. Ha ha

Looks like your well on your way. Have you decided on your engine yet or color scheme ?
I`m going to start the build in the next day or two and will post pics as the build progresses.

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

I'm probably going to try with my spare os fl70.
The colours are still a big question but since I still have 10metres transparent I maybe cover the top of both wings transparent and the rest with yellow and black.
Any suggetions are welcom.
And what about your colours?

Maroon metalic and gold metalic. I do custom motorcycle painting, so I may break out the airbrush on this one.More than likely flames. But every time I do a build I seem to change my mind. I get as far as you then I`ll have to make up my mind . LOL
This LT40 started out all white like the pic on the box, but got a little side traked.

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

I'm in the final stages of assembly on my Ultimate and have enjoyed most of it. The only real issues I have had with the kit have been the sheeting provided for the trailing edge has been very brittle breaking easily. I should have changed it out for something a little more substantial.
The fuse sides are heavy dense wood on my kit but should hold up forever. I have decided to go with a ST 51 for power. I need to get out and finish the rudder hinging and then get to sanding it all. I haven't decided on a covering scheme yet . Life keeps getting in the way...

Here are some pics of my completed GP Ultimate .40. I used a Saito 72 4 stroke engine. The only mod I done to this plane is installed to servos for the Ailerons. These were built with 1/16 lite ply. I felt that moving four surfaces with one servo was a bit much.

Hey Insanemoondoggie,

Did you ever turn this stuff into an airplane? I am thinking of this for a winter project and I just started searching for build threads. Let us know how it turned out.

Insanemoondoggie,

I have built two GP Ultimates (still have #2) and also own a Magnum 52FS. I think you will be disappointed with the performance of a GP Ultimate with the Magnum.

I had a Saito 65 in my first Ultimate and the current one has an OS46FX which flies it very well. If you are going 4C I suggest you try and get hold of a 65 or 72.

BTW, can confirm one servo is OK.

Regards

Terry

To be honest, the bipe has was put on hold , while busy flying this summer. Right now I`m building a new build table and am going to start the build back up.
I also made two right fuse sides and had to order new pieces . Ops! But have them now. Have aqiured a very strong running Saito .72 for it. I`ve been flying a GP Skybolt with a Saito 1.00 and really like the perfomance .
I`ve just about got the shop set up to finish the build, and will take pic`s as I go.
Redback, thanks for the info , did you use the Cowl and wheelpants that come with the kit ?

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

IMD,

I used the wheel pants but tossed the cowl for ones from Stan's Fibretech (think that was the name, believe it's now under new ownership.

Saito 72 sounds like MUCH more fun!

I just got back from our club's annual Swap & Sale meeting. I picked up an unopened kit for a Northeast Aerodynamics Bel Air .40, about 20 years old. It looked to be about the same dimensions as the GP Ultimate, so I figured I would give it a shot. I'll post some pictures when I get around to starting it.

Well ? Have a few other builds out of the way . Just finishing up the covering on a Slowpoke , then I intend to finish this kit.

Did get the fuse glued up and now it`s time to glue the tailfeathers and and fit the wing ,stab and rudder square to fuse and each other.

As you can see by the pics , I had to get pretty agressive with the fuse . But I have resigned myself to the fact , that this is my build from Hell and dues are going to be paid every step of the way. lol!

Robbie,
This is an easy decision. Two wings = 4 cylinders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

Thanks Ken .
The only reason I concidered a larger 2 stroke , this thing is built like a tank . After replacing a lot of the wood , it still feels pretty heavy .

The saito .72 has been one of the strongest running engines I have , so it may do the job fine.

My goal this year , is not to have any ARFs . I found out last year , that my kit built planes are much better than the ARFs and I dont have much respect for the ARFs and tend to smuck them on a regular bases . All my kits builts , survived last year , but I`ve got a nice pile of ARF parts , lol

The only exception , will be my SkyBolt arf . Replaced the firewall and beefed it up in the areas that needed it. The SkyBolt arf weighs over a pound less than the kit , is why I went with it.

May try a scracth built , but have a US .60 and a Sukhoi I want to build first .

I really wanted to go with after market cowl and wheel pants , but the wife says I need to cut the spending a little , so I`m going to give the cowl that came with the kit a try . Everything I`ve read about the plastic parts , says dont waste my time with them, but hopeefully they`ll last a few flights if I mount it right.

Cut the cowl out and used CA to glue the 3 pieces together . Went over the seams real good , then sanded with 120 grit and applied a coat of lite body filler . Then sanded down with 80 grit folewed by 120 . Came out pretty good , I`ll give it a couple of coats of sanding primer and it should be ready or paint.

And the kit has remained true to form , went to cut out the wheel pants , and they gave me 4 inside right halves, lol [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] It well just have to live without any.

I might end up doing the color scheme that's on the kit box , don't really care for it , but having trouble coming up with something else, any ideas ?

Getting close , still need to pick up a Sulivan tailwheel and install the lower wing ailerons , `could`nt get the warp out f them` have some new stock coming.

Went with the Saito .72 instead of the Magnum. Weighs 6 lbs. 1 oz.

[sm=bananahead.gif] I must say , this has been one of those builds , I had to make myself finish , but I`m glad I did , it broaden my building skills .

Think she`ll fly ?

Nice looking plane. I used to have a .40 size ultimate (World Models ARF) and it was a blast to fly. You just had to make sure you didn't let it slow down too much on landing.

Insanemoondoggie 02-18-2008 07:40 PM

RE: GP Ultimate Bipe.40 build

Thanks Chuck , I`ve been flying a SkyBolt , and like the way it lands .

Been flying the Ultimate on G.3.5 , just to dang cold for the maiden , not to mention all the snow.
Started the Sukhio today, may do a build thread . if there is any interest.
