Lookin Gooooood!!! Can you give us a little insite in to your covering job? What Kote are you using, Mono or Ultra? Are you cutting your own pin stripes? Is your checker board pattern store bought or home made? Tell us your secrets to such a fine job, it's not good to be this jealous so early in the morning. Keep up the good work and please keep the pic's comming.

Its Monokote.
Stripes are cut from Monokote.
Checkerboards are Monokote.

I use a piece of glass to cut on. I take my iron and basically iron a piece to the glass, measure, and then make the cut for whatever I am doing at that point. The piece wont really adhere to the glass but it stays in place well enough to cut.
The checkerboards were cut out of black and laid over the white base. It didnt come out perfect but its good enough for the bottom.

Is the whole thing covered in white and the red laid on over it? What I'm asking is, at the leading edge is there white under the red or just a really clean seam with a small overlap? I ask because my covering skills leave a lot to be desired and when I see a nice job I can't help but to probe into how it was done. Thanks.

Wow Wayne!! That looks awesome!! I love the color scheme... I'm going to copy it on something down the road.. Is that paint up front on your engine bearers? How did you keep the Monokote to Monokote from bubbling?

Hi Guys,

The only monokote over monokote is the black checkers and the stripes on the top of the wing. The bottom has a white base and the black squares are laid over it. The white on the bottom is overlapped 1/4" by the red.

On the top the white is done first and stops 1/4" past where I want the red to be. That way I have a 1/4" seam under the color break.

To do the Monokote over Monokote I mist the surface with windex, put the pieces in place, squeegee out the excess and iron with very low heat. Its hard to get it done without any bubbles especially over open areas where there is no support under the Monokote. Sometimes I will use a woodpecker to put tiny holes in the base coat prior to laying another piece over it.
But, this is a Fun-fly and its on the bottom so perfection isnt that important.

Oh yeah,

Yes, thats paint on the engine compartment. Its Pactra formula U brush-on. Its the first time I have used it. I generally just use thinned epoxy.
The Formula U seems to work pretty good. It took almost 3 days to harden up completely though.

Wgeffon,
That SuDo does look good. I just want to show mine as well. If somebody here is interested, and they are willing to pay what these planes are worth, well then mine is for sale. What would you say one of these, less engines and electronics is worth?

DK,

Yours looks great.

What are they worth? If you went through the trouble of putting the darn thing together I'd say they are worth more than anyone is probably going to pay. What a horrible kit.

How do you like how yours flies? Is that a YS up front? Which one.

Wayne,
Yeah, that's why I said if anybody is willing to pay what they're worth. Actually I built min in one week, and covered it in 1/2 week, but I was unemployed and motivated he he. Yes, that's a YS91AC in the nose, with a Zinger16x6 prop that I modifiied and love now.
Mine has a little bit of battle scars now, but only in the covering. When it was newly built, I would ask $300 for it, now $250 would take it, which is close to what it costs to build it.
I want to build a Jerry's Spoiler, and I am also getting warm on The Great Knife for an OS BGX-1 I have, and apparenntly can't even giive away ha ha.
It flies well, funny thing how the engine mounts to the right of center line, so I have about 1/16" under forward mounting holes for right thrust.
Mine needs a fair amount of spoilerons to do an elevator and harrier, and even then it is 'hairy' on a windy day. I only bring it down to a harrier landing on fairly calm days, others I bring it to within a foot and go up to a hover and torqueroll. I am finally getting to the point where I dont have to think about the rudder beeing reversed when belly in.
Here's another picture, I just did the lnding gear, but only saved in the neighborhood of 4-5 oz, but it looks techy he he.

Wayne,

It looks really great, except you should have used them SDK wingtips he he. I see you used a lighter red than I did, otherwise, they look very much alike. Did you say you put a Saito 100 on it, which prop will you start on? Let me know how you like it in the air, and what you find are its up and down falls. Best of luck with your maiden flight, whenever that takes place.

DK,

I used Missle Red Monokote. Yours looks like True Red or Dark Red.

I put a Saito 1.20 in it. Break-in and first flights will be on a 16x6

Do you know what yours weighs?

Boy you make me want to build this thing bad.... Let us know how it flys... What is the final weight? I've seen some cood composite gear made from carbon fiber that would take some weight out of the nose... Did you have to add any weight to balance?

Wayne,

Great job, what is the weight on yours? Can't wait for your flight report, I am waiting to see if you think the wing tips make any difference before finishing mine. Also want your views on the engine choice.

Paul,

Do you know who makes the CF replacement gear for it? I looked for some a few weeks back and couldnt find any.

I dont have access to an acurrate scale anymore so I havnt weighed it.

wgeffon 03-07-2002 03:29 PM

Su-Do .60 so far

Oh yeah,

I did add 3 oz's of weight in the tail as I was building it. I figured it would need somewhere around that much. I havnt done an accurate balance test yet but, from just picking it up at the balance point it seems to be ok.
The real balancing happens once its in the air and I can feel how it flies.

When do you think you will get it in the air?

Probably next week sometime. I start 5 days of flying tomorrow.
( yeah they make me work sometime )

Wayne - Some guy is fabricating his own CF gear using some kind of wet layup technique with alternating layers of CF... I searched for the thread for 1/2 hr...... I can't find it... But there's a guy that goes by Darrinc that teaches a composites class that could shed some light here... It didn't sound like it was very hard... Just makeing a foam mold and a vacuum bag...
