Sig Kougar Build
 

I started my Kougar over a year ago but I haven't gotten very far - I started it with the intention of adding retracts which was the biggest hangup. It just was sucking too much time out of the project and with my other responsibilities in life I couldn't make the time for it.

So, I ordered a couple of new wing cores and decided to start over. This is the thread to watch this thing get built.

Today I sheeted one of the wings, I'll do the other tomorrow hopefully, hoping to have them assembled by the end of the weekend.

I'm building mine for electric power and ready to sheet the wings. I purchased some 10" wide sheeting from Balsa USA and plan to use aliphatic resin and iron on the balsa sheeting. The tail group has been lightened by adding holes to all areas. I will also remove some weight by removing some of the fuse balsa as well.
An Axi 2826-10 and either a 4S or 5S lipo pack at 3800Mah should provide more than enough power if I manage to keep the weight down.
I had to start another fuse as the old one had been damamged and the balsa was dried out a little too much.

I've built three previously - I'll have to scan the few pictures I have. This is my forth in 25 years, I'm really contemplating a King Kobra for later in the year with retracts and an OS 61 SF.

I've been using 3M spray on adhesive for the wing skins and it has never failed me.

I'll second the 3M adhesive, that stuff is strong!!! Makes skinning wings a piece of cake.

Yep. Keeps the residue under the wing where it doesn't try to migrate through the saddle into the radio compartment.

Sheeted the second wing this evening; tomorrow I plan on doing the leading and trailing edges (I think that's what the instructions say is next...).

Sheeting is trimmed, leading and trailing edges are attached, probably tomorrow I'll work on trimming them, adding and trimming the wing tips and the gear mounts.

I have a couple of things in mind but typically I do things simply. I am considering a blue/tan stripped camo scheme. That's what I had purchased originally for it and what I would like to do but my skills with the monocote are not that great.

I tend to rush through that part but will make a special effort not to do that here.

You might want to consider.

After 500 flights and numerous repairs I put the canopy on a Kougar with screws, which turned out to be a much neater installation. Also did the same with a King Kobra that I have not flown. Now when the pilot panics and looses his flight glasses they can be fixed without adding more canopy glue.

Today I worked on the leading and trailing edges some more but only for a few minutes. Hopefully I'll have a little more time later this evening to get the wing tips started.

Here's how I covered mine. YS .45 with a pipe under the belly. (Not yet installed when this photo was taken.) The pipe really makes the engine come alive. Dry weight 5 pounds 7 ounces with the pipe, Robart fancy gear, and an extra nosewheel servo. Essentially unlimited vertical.

As has been said many times, you will love your Kougar. Good luck with it.

Been a bit of a busy week, wife threw her back out so I've been unable to get down to the garage. I'm hoping to do a little work mid-day today. My next task is shaping the wing tips.

Nice snow-birds covering job, looks real good.


I too wish there was more room for retracts.

Thanks J, she's just laid up on the couch so I have to manage the little one.

I got a little done while they boy napped today and I think I will be able to get down there a little more tonight, hopefully I will be able to get the wings joined.

Try to get them as straight as possible from fornt to back. It will make it stay in a loop better...

Submikester, in retrospect I wish I had put seperate aileron servos instead of using one servo with torque rods.

I built my second Kougar a few years ago when I was laid off from work. I had a new kit that was lying around for a few years along with all the radio gear and a new K&B 65 Sportster( about 5 years old but new, never run). Man, this thing is a rocket with the K&B 65 in the nose. Guys at my field love it when I bring out and fly it. I looks like a jet in the sky. My Kougar is a blast to fly and has almost unlimited vertical. It lands wonderful, just set it up, bring the throttle down and it practically lands itself. No bad habits. I can post pictures if anyone wants to see it. The covering job is nothing fancy. It's done in jet white with red and blue stripes on top from the leading edge of the wings and horizontal stab.
