My GP ElectriCub Kit project
1 Attachment(s)
My current project is a Great Planes Electic Cub Kit, an I would like to share some photos with you, hoping for some feedback on my progress. Any hints/tips along the way would be great.
While the kit suggests a brushed geared engine and NiCad batteries (its an old kit), I would like to go brushless/Li-Po, and I was wondering if anyone have a suggestion on what kind of engine (how powerfull) I need to get this thing flying. Im not looking for extreme performance, but enough power to pull get me out of dangerous situations. Here are some pictures. I got plenty of building time now as the summer holiday is not over yet. I got the kit just a few days ago, and already im done with the tail feathers and 90% done with the wing. |

That is looking very nice. I am currently building the
same kit and i'm working on the fuselage. I also asked about a brushless motor direct drive. joonorway gave me some great advice, it is posted under pattern flying section. Bob dignlivn I am new at getting Old. |

Hi
Forgot to update this post for a while. The Cub is coming along nicely. But the summer vacation is over, so its back to work now. Im done with most of the woodwork, and started covering the tail feathers. Ive brought a Hyperion Z3019-12 brushless engine that I hope will do the trick, and later Im gonna buy a Hyperion 50amp controller and 3S Lipo in the 3200+ range. Need to find a way to mount the engine, though. |

Great pics, I'm stumped on setting the incidence for the Horizontal Stab ? So I have not attached it to the fuse yet. What part of the Stab is @ 3 dgrees + incidence to the aft deck at 0 degrees ? TIA Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Have you tried putting the Cowl in some very warm water? Bob |

brsseb Have you choose your servos yet ? Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
ORIGINAL: dignlivn brsseb Have you choose your servos yet ? Bob Ive brought the flight pack, a Hitec 6ch mini rx and tree Hitec HS-81 servos. Ive also brought a Hyperion Z3019-12 brushless motor and trying to find a way to fit it to the firewall. I dont think the included motor mount kit is gonna fit, so i must either make a custom one from scratch or buy a mount for it somewhere.. |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Hey, My build slowed down to, due to chest pains. I'll prpobably have the same motor mount issues, when I reach that part of the build. Bob |

this is my GP elec Cub I covered it in clear and then painted the front yellow fading it out past the cowl. Flies great with a 7 cell 2200 MAH Nicad. I use a master airscrew 500 with a 2.5 to 1 gear on it. will soon be making it run on lipo. Only mod I did was the top of the turtle deck i cut a few holes in it to lighten it a little. It will ride a thermal [img][/img]

Any Progress on the Cub ? Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Its moving very slowly at the moment. Lots of other work to do. (also might be because I absolutly hate covering... I got an iron and a heatgun and seen lots of articles and videos, but no matter what I do it never looks good...)
Still waiting for my hobby dealer to ship me the replacement cowling. Should get it this week. In the mean time, ive found a engine mount that fits perfect: http://aircraft-world.com/prod_datas...FRTMNT-ALL.jpg Im gonna mount my Hyperion Hyperion Z-3019 (12-Turn 904K) as an innrunner. Ive test-fitted it with the broken cowl, and i think it will fit nicely. Need to drill new mounting holes in the firewall, figure out how to fit the new cowl in place. |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Interesting mount, is it heavy? I know what you mean about Covering lol. This Cub will be my 3rd build, the other 2 where 20 years ago. I still have my Iron from back then. I've picked up some new tools for covering also. Keep us posted. Bob |

Sorry for the long wait. Havent had much time for the project this month, but got a few hours work today and yesterday. Here are some shots of the fuselage and the cool engine mount.
Almost done with the pushrods. Just need to make sure they can operate freely. Might have to shave off some balsa at one of the rear formers, as the elevator pushrod is rubbing against it, but otherwise it looks good. Gonna cover all tail feathers and glue their hinges so that I can properly test the pushrods, then Ill move on to covering the fuselage itself. The wing is still not covered (I dont look forward to that job...not with the cubs round wing tips...[:'(] ). Then I need to pick a ESC and battery pack. Im currently considering a Hyperion 50A ESC and a 3s lipo pack in the 3200mha range. No clue on the prop size yet. Anyone got any tips? |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
I just covered the tail feathers and ailerons. Starting the pushrods tomorrow, also putting off covering the Wing lol. Need to order my Motor,Esc and lipo soon. I've read somewhere that a 10x6 prop might be a choice? Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
How did you measure the Down thrust ? TIA Bob |

brsseb I'm slowly getting back to it after surgery, here's a couple pics. I hope Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Good to hear you are feeling better. Your Cub looks good.
Ive gotten a few more hours work yesterday, the tail feathers are now covered and the hinges glued in place. Need to shave off some wood from the formers, the elevator and rudder links cant move freely yet. I havent measured down thrust yet, Ill check the plans further and see if the prop is at the correct downward angle. If not, ill add abit of plywood under the two bottom engine mount screws to tilt it upwards abit. When all this is done, ill cover the rest of the fuselage and the wing. Then its time to order ESC and battery. Ill keep you posted on the progress. |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
brsseb Well I got the motor, now I need to work on a mount for it. I've also started covering the wing, it's been a long time since I covered.lol Did you use the servo tray that came with the kit ? I'm still thinking about making 2 rails for the 2 servos instead ? Bob |
RE: My GP ElectriCub Kit project
Yeah, I used the included servo tray for the rudder and elevator servos. Thinking of covering up the hole where the throttle servo should have been and use it as a place for the reciever. Got the brushless BEC now, a Hyperion 50 OPTO regulator, a good match for the Hyperion engine.
Next on the schedule is covering the wing. Btw, are you going to use a seperate 4.7V battery for the flight pack, or do you draw power from the main battery pack? Looks as if it will be pretty heavy if we need two packs of battery in that small aircraft.. |
