RE: I remember when......
I remember.... walking into the hobby shop and looking up at the shelves, completely full from waist level to the ceiling, with red & yellow kit boxes. All the way around the shop.
In 1994 I walked into the AMA museum, they had a little hobby shop setup, almost exactly the same way, don't know how they got all the red/yellow boxes! It was like I was in a 35 year time warp. I wonder if they still have it. Dave Olson |

I remember when build threads and arfs didn't go together:)

RE: I remember when......
Trying to get the miscut kit pieces to fit together for my Berkely Tri-Pacer. They looked great in the ads, though.
|
RE: I remember when......
trying to make a cox control liner fly was a prerequisite to starting in R/C

RE: I remember when......
I remember when I first flew a CL Wen Mac powered plastic ARMY Dauntless Dive Bomber, that dropped a bomb when you pulled a third line, and building my first balsa CL a Scientific Super Cub with the Wen Mac in it......and MacDonald burgers at 15 cents each!

I remember...
when I could get 90% of what I needed to build from the LHS and order the other 10%, now it's the opposite![:o] |
RE: I remember when......
I remember when I bought my first balsa model plane... a Sterling P-47. Of course I was only 9 when I bought it and up to that time I had only bought and built plastic kits. Boy was I surprised to open the box and find nothing but sheets of balsa wood and a rubber band, tissue paper and plastic wheels. I had no idea where to start so it sat there for about 5 years. Then I rediscovered it and built it using Duco cement. I don't think anything was square on it but I did manage to fly it and it did fly fairly well.
I also remember the first time I ever saw an R/C airplane and guys with their gold, red, blue and white colored transmitters and names like Cannon, EK Logictrol, Kraft, Heathkit and the cadillac of the time period Pro-Line. Four channel radios that cost about $400 back then, 1968. And oh, I forgot to mention that smell of castor oil permeating the air that turned out to be as addictive as heroine since here it is almost 40 years later and I still can't get enough of that smell when I'm at the field... reminds me of my youth. |
RE: I remember when......
I remember when the QSAA (Quarter Scale Asso. of America?) was the biggest deal in the States down in Las Vegas. Now even the AFR's are bigger than 25%.
|
RE: I remember when......
AFR's?

RE: I remember when......
I remember when you disobeyed your father and your "time out" was spent over his knee. I remember untangling the phone cord and getting up to turn the channel on the TV. I also remember the thrill I had when I built my first plane and watched it fly. Kind of like the first time I danced with a beautiful girl.................Dear Lord, I must be getting old if I got that much of thrill out of it.

RE: I remember when......
I remember when getting high off dope was ...was....was.....what was I saying? Oh yea, I remember when dope was something you used on airplanes;)
|
RE: I remember when......
Put a "Tiger in Your Tank". Hey I remember that as a kid. Esso is still Esso in Canada.
Every transmitter at the field was either a "Kraft" or "EK Logictrol". ORIGINAL: housedad ORIGINAL: dignlivn I remember Sinclair gas stations and Gas Wars. Bob "There's a Tiger in your tank" and the commercials with a tiger tail hanging out of the fuel door. "The commercials where the guy drove around without a car, just a steering wheel. Remember when Exxon was named ESSO? When the Idea of bolt on wings was a novelty? When someone got you one of those godawful Cox plastic C/L airplanes in a box that flew better with the engine off? And ripping out the engines as soon as possible to put them in the latest free flight you built? When the best thing there was for Monokote was a travel iron? Snoopy flying doghouse? Sterling models? |
RE: I remember when......
Flash back to 1985
When an electric plane was a glider stuffed full of nicad's and didn't glide all that well. When 1/4 scale planes with Quadras were fiddly hard to start beasts.. When my Gold Box Futaba was shiny and new.. Before Tower Hobbies owned the world and Byrons still made the best giant scale kits. When picking out the next kit to build was tough because you had so many to choose from. |
RE: I remember when......
Shell gas (100 miles to a gallon) 16oz RC,2-5cent bags of potato chips =20cents ,Hobby shop in almost every town. Jade East was the colone pub

When RC Modeler was a great magazine, especially some of the covers. ;) |

I remember when....
Drive-in restaurants still had "car hops" and trays that attached to your car door. Drive-in movie theaters. Speaking to a jack in the box at Jack in the Box. 25¢ plastic airplane models in plastic bags hanging on racks at the local mom and pop grocery. Putting vegetables in brown paper bags at the market. Pumping gas, while checking the oil, and washing the windows at the gas station I worked at during the summer. Boones Farm. Spanada. Kool Aid in soft plastic bottles that you chewed the top off to get the drink out. Wampum. Tiny-Nailors. 5¢ Phone Booths Phone numbers with names like HO-50797 (Hollywood 50797) Glass oil bottles at the gas station. Richfield gas. Connies loading passengers at Lockheed Air Terminal. :D |

I remember my first radio (A four channel Kraft Gold Medal Series) Cost $350.00. So, a few things weren't better way back when!
|
RE: I remember when......
I remember most of the things you all have mentioned including the unflyable wen mac dive bomber! I miss the easy acess to flying fields, Sky King on the black and white, safe neighborhoods for kids to play in, cops that were able to correct kids for small offences, teachers that were in control of the class room. It sure is a different world now.[sm=drowning.gif]

WOW !!! Reading this is bringing back a lot of memories. What about watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show ?? or the Honeymooners ?
That's it - I'm officially old. Put me on that chunk of ice and push me out into the water.[sm=cry_smile.gif] |
RE: I remember when......
the castor oil smell still takes me back to the late 70's/early 80's going to an airfield to watch planes. rc was so far out of reach then all i could do is watch.

Don't forget "The Eagle has landed" on TV. Bob |
RE: I remember when......
I remember those clear plastic ovals we put on car windows so the window wouldn't ice over in the winter and my "Jim Walker" U-control handle.
|
RE: I remember when......
Balsa gliders packaged in boxes of breakfast cereal. Man, I ate a lot of cereal back then!

RE: I remember when......
I remember when I could see decently, and hear even better. Of course, in those days gas was $.20/gal, $5.00 filled the tank, bowling cost $.20/game and movies were $.25
I also remember when I WASN'T the only person in the county who knows how to silk & dope a plane. Dave |
