Astro Hog Pics.
Well I have started my Winter build (Asto Hog) and looking for Ideas on covering. As of now I am leaning toward Coverite Fabric. I have never used it, so i'm looking for ideas and opinions. Thanks, Bob |

Here's the one I built back in the mid 90's. Went with the "Gee Bee Model D" scheme. Powered with an OS 91 4-stroke.

RE: Astro Hog Pics.
I haven't any pics to share.. But back a few years ago when more than one guy in our club flew the hog, they would build them with a little less dihedral than the kit called for, I always thought they looked better that way as well. I don't think it hurt any of the flying properties...

Thanks for the info. Terry, Nice looking Hog,did you ever encounter problems with your main gear ? I'm going the tail dragger route too. Bob |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
My Astro Hog was covered in Ultracoat and was as close as possible to the red/white pattern shown on the box. It was a tail dragger and I knocked a gear block loose in one wing on the first flying day. I mounted a Dubro composite gear in front of the wing and that worked well.

RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Just about got all of the parts cut out for my plan build Astro-Hog. Have built three prior Hogs and they all flew great; didn't really matter how much dihedral was used. I've built 'em with the 6 degrees and the 3 degrees dihedral and prefer the 6 degrees 'cause it looks more like an Astro-Hog. I will give the red and white taildragger color scheme a go this time around.
Will add an extra dihedral brace on the rear of the wing spars (both made from 1/8" aircraft plywood), sheer webbing on the wing panels, landing gear supports are cut from 1/8" Lite-Ply and go on both sides of each LG rib, the Stab doubler is made from 1/8" aircraft ply, will add tri-stock balsa at all fuselage/doubler joints for reinforcement, have carved the headrest from a balsa block and will pin the Elev. joiner via wire. Plan to power mine with the O.S. 75AX. Will get to gluing parts together within the week! I really enjoy cutting my own parts out as I can select the wood for each application and the parts turn out great. Once I start the build process everything is ready to go and the construction goes along pretty fast. Good luck on your Astro-Hog project this Winter and soft landings! |

Thanks Carrell and Squeakalong, That is some good pointers you both made. I was thinking about the Dubro gear also. It is on my GP 40 Stick and works great. Bob |

Carrell, do you download your digital pictures to an Internet pic program like Photobucket or can I download them to My Pictures on my desktop? (Darn, it's embarrassing to ask....[:o])

Thanks for the information! Nice "HOG" you have there...I believe I'll do the red/white box scheme, too.

Beautiful Planes, Thanks for posting. I have the R. wing together, and started the L wing today. This is a "Craftsman Kit" for sure. Bob |

Bob,
I swear by Ultra Cote from Horizon Hobbies. The stuff is great. Pretty easy to work with and does curves very well. You project can come out wrinkle free. Below are picture of my Aeromaster, a similar plane to the Astro Hog Biplane. Good luck. |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Chevelle, Great looking Bipe, Is UC similar to Coverite Fabric ? This is my fourth build and have only used MC in the past. First 2 builds where in the 80's when there was not many choices . Bob |

Chevelle, Thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward a fabric and I have never painted a Plane. So Coverite Fabric is appealing to me so far. I have had some good building weather this weekend, wind, rain and a bit of snow. Bob |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Hey guys, I was watching epoxy cure last night on my wing, while studying the fuselage plans. I noticed there is NO offset for the firewall ? The plans say 0 degrees L/R & U/D? Curious about the Thrust set up ? Bob |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Hi, Bob. I've built and set three of these Hogs up per the plan and the model flies great. I'm plan building another one for myself right now and it's set up the same way. Have fun on yor build..it's a neat 'ole plane!
BTW: Do you know how LOOONG it takes to make your own tapered ailerons, rudder and elevators from standard balsa stock........I do! :) They turned out great though. Soft landings. |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Thanks squeakalong, Yea there is just a bit of sanding to do with this Kit lol. Bob |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
There's a WHOLE lot more sanding to do when you make your own parts for a scratch/plan build...probably spent 4 hours or so making up my own tapered ailerons, elevators, and rudder by the time I traced the parts on sheet stock, cut out the parts, set up the appropriate music wire rods to sand the taper on each side, actually sanded the taper on each side using three grades of sandpaper, located each hinge line and put in the hinge line bevels on each of the five pieces required for the Astro-Hog. Whew!! Nearly wore me out just writing it....:) Lots of fun for me though!!
Soft landings. Joe |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
Hey guys, Well the wings are near completion. I have a conflict between the Manual and the Plans ? Th plans show 3 hinges per Aileron and the manual say 5 hinges per Aileron. Also, I am going with 2 Servos for the ailerons. Do I do 3 or 5 hinges ? Any input will help, Thanks Bob |
RE: Astro Hog Pics.
I'd split the difference and do 4 :)
