em - chashint - you takin' a shot at MasterAlex with that "speedy" comment? :D:D:D:D:D
I've used the "panel" approach on several planes. I cut the pieces on glass. I assemble and seal them on glass using a flat-based trim iron on low heat - just enough to activate the ultracote's adhesive. I then use a covering iron at 220 degrees to ensure full adhesion. Let the covering cool and it peals off the glass very easily. Don't let it cool - you'll find out that you need to let it cool. [&o]. Only downside with paneling ultracote is that the covering is not totally opaque and the seams show through. I've used true red, bright yellow and orange. The seam shows through irrespective of the top color. They aren't truly opaque. Maybe Monokote is better in this respect. I just finished a 4Star60 covering using a base / trim approach using ultracote white, pearl blue, true red and bright yellow. The resulting job shows no seams. Cost? 4 hours to lay 4 pieces of trim over the wings. Time included lancing many bubbles. Finished covering job has no visible bubbles. pic 1: white base with blue/yellow/red trim applied on the plane pic 2: SSE tail - panel assem - all pieces cut-n-assembled into a panel on glass pic 3: SSE wing top - panel assem pic 4: SSE wing bot - panel assem pic 5: SSE fuse - panel assem Panel assembly is one heck of a lot easier!!!!!!!! It's lighter. Less expensive (less material used). Downside are visible seams. (edited) In retrospect I would create a blue/white/yellow/white panel on the 4Star60's wing top. Then add the red bolt as a piece of trim. Time savings of 4 hours. |

I'm still looking at a naked fuselage. Maybe this weekend I'll start getting her covered. Piper ... keep up the good work! -MA |

I built one of the first kits back in 1993 (?) I forget the year. It was one of the first laser cut kits and boy was I spoiled! I put an OS 80H two stroke in it that probably has the same power as a Saito 91, maybe a 100 I don't know. At that time the engine was mounted upright. After flying it for a few years I crashed it due to a bad receiver that had killed another plane (slow learner). In the process it crunched the nose, bent the cabanes, and damaged the OS. No other damage going straight down at idle from about 40 feet! Anyway, because I had it, I put an HP61 in it sideways with a Pitts muffler and built the fiberglass cowl you see in the picture. It wasn't enough power so I hung the model up for another 5-6 years. Over the last few weeks I found the parts for the OS and swapped out the engines. I had to rework the cowl some and then paint it. I did two flights on it today with sucess, that is I brought it home in one piece but boy am I rusty. Here it is as it looks today. Original Coverite and Randolph dope, painted on trim. It has a checkerboard bottom on the lower wing. Fun plane and a really fun build.

Thanks for sharing av8djc. I like the lines of the cowl & offset engine. I have a SIG Sun Dancer cowl for my Hog Bipe project. According to SIG the Bipe & Sun Dancer firewalls have the same dimensions. My plan is to use a Hayes AL60 motor mount at 90 degrees offset like you did. With the AL60 I can swap an OS61FX, OS91FX, Saito 91 or Super Tigre G90 if I keep the throttle cable common.

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
ORIGINAL: SeamusG Well chashint - I'm starting a Hog Bipe thread - you may get your opportunity for revenge fairly soon [sm=47_47.gif] My hog Bipe barely saw its first birthday before it returned to mother earth on its own free will, but during that year I really enjoyed the plane. Someday I will build another one, but there are other projects ahead of it. I thought it was a nice straight forward build and a very nimble flyer. There are very few complaints about this plane, mine did have a lot of down coupling with the rudder which I had not figured out how to compensate for knife-edge before the fatal flight but otherwise I have no other negative feedback on flight performance. I never had a nose over problem with the landing gear in yhe stock location, I did replace the landing gear with a Dubro super strength gear because the one Sig supplied in the kit is to soft. On the advice of a fellow club member with a Hog Bipe I did not use the plastic push rods that came with the kit, he said he had to retrim the plane almost every flight. Other than the pushrod change I glued it together per print with the dual aileron servo mod. When I build the replacement I will use two aileron servos but I may put them in the center of the wing instead of in the wing panels. |

Heres my progress from the week-end, it's gonna be pretty, just hope it flies that way. Not much time here, sorry i haven't done much with the step by step, but I kind of have a one track mind on getting it done!!

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
I really like your treatment of the headrest. Is that paint or covering? If covering, how long did you take to work it out? What kind of iron heat will the headrest accept?
|
RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Piper looks great! How'd you cover the tail section? Is it all white then re-covered with purple? How did you secure the plastic headrest?
-MA |
RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Gotta ask - you guys assemble the tail section on the fuse before or after covering?
|
RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
if im using plastic film, i will assemble after covering, but with koverall, i always assemble then cover

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Hey all! My fault for not posting step by step pics.......{the whole point of a thread} sry. I ended up covering the headrest and fixing it to the fuse with canopy glue......hope it holds cause i worked on that cover job for ..lets just say a while...lol I used high heat, and finished with the gun, seemed to work. The tail section i used the Alex Method.....I give him credit cause i never saw it done that way before reading his thread....I plan on doing the same with the stab, i'll post pics as i go this time.

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
All of these Hog Bipe builds are great.
I like the colors Piper. |
RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Hey guys..........haven't got the time to post pics, but i wanted to tell you about the "headrest incident".....I did use covering on it, turned out ok, but the covering kept bubbling up, i tried to use my heat gun carfuly to smooth it out, not careful enough, it melted the plastic. fortunately it was on the front of the headrest so i cut it off moved the front into place, glued it, sanded it and painted it. i t turned out beutiful, i'll never cover plastic parts agian..........lesson learned. I'll post some pics tonight.

Not alot of time, i have to get to work, but here are some pics of the Alex method I used to cover the wings, I re-used the plastic from the wing and just traced the stab half from the plans on it, seemed to work pretty well

hey all, I've been busy so i haven't had much of a chance to post anything, but i did manage to get everything pretty much covered. I put it together and took a few pics. I'm not sure if i'm going to put any striping on the fuse sides or not, i kinda like it the way it is. Now of course it's on to the landing gear, push rods, engine and radio gear..........hey i's an arf!!! lol. Thanks for hangin on my thread, not near done yet, but it's finally a plane!!

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Wow, looks great. I wish I could build and cover as fast as you! I started on mine around Thanksgiving, but I also slappeded an ARF together and helped my 6 yo boy build his first "kit" too, an AMA Cub. I went with purple and white on mine too. Took me a big chunk of last weekend just to get the wings covered, but those are a major hurdle. I'm gonna try to get the fuse and tailfeatheres done this weekend.

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
Looks nice ... can't wait to see it fly! Should we throw a link to a youtube video on the build thread when you give it a go? I'll take video of your first flight, if you want,..... or maybe you don't?

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
I am in the middle of building a hog bipe to. what kind of paint did you use? my color choice is purple and sky blue. thanks mike.

i purchased an 0s 91 from my friend Tom, have a couple pics of the beast, also decided to recover some of my first build , the SSE, i'm not done , i plan on doing a checkerboard on the rudder and some black trim on the leading edge of the wings.

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread
OK... I'm going to show my lack of engine knowledge here...
Was/is there an OS .91 four stroke that ISN'T a surpass??? Just kind of curious, sometimes I hear different combinations of the terms... Now... for a slightly different topic, would the Biplane Police throw me in jail for putting a 3-blade prop on Hog Bipe???? And if a 3-blade is acceptable.. about what size prop would one bolt onto the front of an OS .91 FS (surpass :D )... Just speaking hypothetically of course... :) |
