Hog Bipe Build Thread

This is my first thread, but my third build. The first two were the Somethin Extra and the Four Star 60. I Started with the firewall of course......i used the OS 61 out of my four star as I don't know what engine i'm goin to use yet, either an OS 91 Surpass or a Saito 100. Both have the same mounting dimentions as my OS 61, so I don't need to make my mind up just yet. As for mods I'm going to do the dual Aileron mod that came with the kit for sure, and the jury is out on the cowl, depends on weather or not I end up with that beutiful Saito! And i'm considering doing a "Stearman mod" on the rudder, though i've read it doesn't improve performance, I think I was just thinking it would look cool. so as soon as my supplies come in {i'm out of everything} I'm gonna roll on this puppy.

Heres some pics of my progress, installed mounts on firewall/marked laser cut parts........

Go for the Saito 100, it's a perfect match! The plane also balances perfectly with the Saito 100.

I was looking true my kit last night, I don't see anything about the dual aileron mod, I looked thru the instructions twice, I know how to do it, but wondering if there is any recomended locations for the servos. Did I miss that section, or is it just a given and builders choice on it?

Thanks

Jon

RE: Hog Bipe Build Thread

If I remember correctly the dual aileron mod comes in a small plastic bag with an instruction sheet in the bag.
It is a couple of bass wood sticks and two plywood servo mounting plates / covers.
I don't remember if the manual has anything in it about the mod or not.
If you have managed to get an old kit that was produced before the mod was included, I bet Sig would send you the mod for free if you called and asked them nicely.

Well, I finally got my order in so i could get rollin............so far i've worked on the fuse.......the tank that i ended up with is round, not to thrilled with it but i think i've secured it enough to keep it from moving around in flight. I attached some double sided tape to the tank, then slit the tank floor on both sides so i could slide the velcro thru and secure it. the double sided tape worked nicely I don't think it'll budge. Otherwise things are pretty standard, except that I can't feed the throttle tube thru yet as I don't have the engine and i'm not sure where the throttle will end up, but from the looks of it i'll be able to feed it thru later. Well back to the grind :D

Wow, looks like you are moving right along to me.
Love the build threads; lots of Hog Bipes have been built, so there is an audience here.

Is there a removeable hatch conversion for these to remove the tank at will? Still new to the game but as a aircraft mechanic I like having access to things.

I did think about installing a hatch, but in this case, with the ribs right over the tank it may be tricky so i think i'll just keep building and if by chance I need to get at the tank later I guess I can always install a hatch then. Hopefully I'll never see the tank again.........unless i look real hard-lol. Here is my progress from last night, It's not all that much fun sheeting but it's done..........

I've never looked through a Hog Bipe build thread before....that fuselage looks remarkably 4*ish to me. Actually if Piper had just left it a mystery I would have thought 4*. Guess Sig is getting good milage out of what Bruce Tharpe designed all those years ago. I planned on building one of these myself...soon as the Warbird bug stops giving me itches to scratch I probably will. I'll be following your progress Piper :D

JCB , I have to ask you how you cut out those blue stripes!!

Sorry, i haven't been paying much attention to the threads...

I used ultra coat and cut uniform lengths (about 3" if i recall correctly) from the roll, so i ended up with pieces that measured 3" x the width of the ultra coat roll. Then i found the center of one of the 3" ends and used that mark to cut a diagonal to each of the corners on the other side, making a LONG triangle. I used different thicknesses for the top and bottom, both of which were right around 3" - I also rounded the point of the triangle to make it a little easier on the eyes.

Bottom line is that i started with rectangular pieces, which are easier to work with when cutting from the roll, and then cut angles in them as needed. I did the same for the leading edge blue piece as it also has a slight angle in it.

BTW: if you want a higher res pic of the hog, lemme know!

Piper, I realize this wasn't directed at me, but I outlined how I did this in my Hog Thread [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=7266776]here[/link]. It's a different method that JCB uses and one that has worked well for me.

Yet another fun night of building.........I didn't get real carried away tonight, just wanted to wrap up the fuse so i could move onto the wings this week-end.
Alex/JCB thanks for the tips. I like the idea of making a sheet out of pieces, just one question......I understood building your sheet with your plans under glass but I'm not clear on what the sheet of plastic is for. Well heres a couple of pics, now onto the wings!!

Hey Alex guess i could've just kept reading in your thread and I would've found the answer huh? I will definately revisit your thread when i start the covering phase

Well another week-end in the hole...........back to work tomorro. My progress this week-end was pretty good, the one piece top wing went together easy enough, my trouble was with my building surface, before a got to the critical "this is the shape your wing is going to be phase" I notice my surface wasn't up to snuff level wise....fixed that problem and moved on, no biggie but i'm glad i noticed. Seems like I should be moving onto the tail section now, but alas i've another wing to build! The only mod i'm doing to my bipe is the dual aileron conversion, oh and a honkin Saito 100 hangin off the front!

The construction went pretty well, no problems....wing tips were somthing new to me, nothing but a little sanding.
heres a couple pics of my progress.........can't wait to cover this one!

Wow, I am envious.
12-25-08 still in the box and 1-11-09 the fuselage and top wing are complete.
Very nice work too.

Here's some pics of my progress from this past week-end, half the bottom wing to go and i'm ready to cover........oh wait that pesky tail section.......thats right.
I'm really enjoying building this kit, even though it's the first kit for me that all the parts weren't laser cut, it's going together pretty ez.....but i'm sick of winter and ready to fly!

It was alot easier to keep the botttom wing straight as it's a 2 piece. Looking forward to flyin this one!!

Bottom wing is not flat on the bottom? curved? Pic is bit hard to tell from. I assume curved since no bottom sheeting in the first pic.

Piper, nice work. Keep going, you're gonna love the way if flies. Here's a pic of mine, built about 10 yrs ago. The HB is a plane that really lends itself to being "bashed" as we say, or customized to look/perform as the builder wants.

The airfoil is symetrical.
