Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Or is my stock of CA too old? Lately it seems to glue balsa OK but not plywood. What do you all think?

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
NO! Just use wood glue, I found that any joint made with CA on plywood results in parts comming apart. Someone out their with give the ultra scientfic answer.

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Medium and thick CA works well with ply, but not thin

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Thanks Mike and iflyg450. I'm about to start glueing the fuselage of my CG Tiger 60. The manual says to assemble the parts with rubber bands, then glue it when everything is adequately lined up. I can't open the joints and put glue on the mating surfaces. Will it be strong enough if I just apply a fillet of yellow glue to both sides of each joint? This my second Tiger 60 but the first one crashed on its second flight so I didn't learn how strong the fuselage was!!
I did learn how strong it wasn't! ;) ;). Frank |
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Yep, that'll work.
One thing - before you glue, be SURE that the tail-end of the fuse is square (I've had to take apart more than one Goldberg Fuse because it wasn't [:@] ) |
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
I've actually added 1/4" square stock to the inside of my tiger II, with wood glue in all the corners, once set-up, it made it stupid strong and the bonous was that it allowed me to really round the edges instead of leaving a small radius on the corners.

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Thanks for the heads up, Mike. I hope I got it right after that guidance. It's now partly glued, still lined up on the plan drawing, hopefully enough to keep it straight when I turn it over tomorrow to get to more joints

Hi PB66
Interesting thought. I guess I built my Tiger 2 according to the plans without mods. It's still hanging in my shop, unscathed, because my wife won't let me fly it after totaling the T-60 on its second flight. |
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
I have good luck with CA on plywood if I rub the plywood with baking soda prior to assembly. It seems to dry the natural oils in the wood and kick off the CA.

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
CA does work, but it flashes way too fast to be able to soak into the woods fibers like it does in balsa wood, regular wood glue will soak into the ply and saturate the joint much better. Just my own preference and experence using CA and wood glue on various materials.

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Come on Fishin Geezer! Be a man, walk in there & tell the wife "you agree with her 100%" you probably shouldn't fly that plane. Then, "secretly" buuild another" just like it & just fly the snot out of it. You can always keep the extra plane" in a buddies garage. If she catches you,all ya have to do is Own up & be truthfull & explain " nah, that's not mine!! Joe just wanted me to fly it for him !!!!

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
It wouldn't work outdoorhunting. She knows that no one, not even Joe, would let me fly his airplane :) :).

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Yea,I figured as much. I've been married to mine for 45yrs. We have been finishing each other's sentences for yrs. I'm a lucky guy, she has never given me any grief about my hobbies. On the other hand, I've never taken advantage of her either.

Great covering job Geezer! [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Good for you, outdoorhunting. Sounds like a really great relationship! We've only got about 35 years behind us in our house and I have gotten away with a lot in the way of hobbies. I could actually fly the Tiger 2 if I really wanted to but I've decided to yield to her preferences this time.
safeTwire Thanks for the compliment. I think it turned out pretty well. To a great extent I was trying to follow the guidance of MinnFlyer on changing colors on the wing at an angle, not just straight fore and aft. It was pretty interesting. Frank |
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Youre welcome Geezer! The layout is great, and I absolutely love the colors!

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Hard to beat red, white, and blue, isn't it!!
|
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
titebond wood glue or, epoxy, or west systems epoxy, just rough up the ply first

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
I'm about ready to cover my Tiger 2 and I did it by the plans and used medium and thick CA in the corners with a spritz or two of activator to set it. Seems to have worked great.

RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
OK, I did it. With it lined up straight and square I applied Elmers carpenters glue to what horizontal joints I could reach. I used the Monojet syringe I saw Minnflyer use in one of his videos. Let it dry overnight, then turned it over and repeated on the other side. Then repeated for the sides. It took a couple of days to complete but it looks pretty good and feels solid. And I'm not suffering from my reaction to CA!!
Thanks all, Frank |
RE: Does Thin CA Work With Plywood?
Hi!
Any Ca glue (thick, medium or thin) works good on Finnish airplane plywood (Fur three). Light plywood is best glued with something else though , even if ca glue works ... |
