Finally cooled off enough to get some work done. Finished the wheels and painted the hubs. Mounted the tail feathers.
Working on the struts now.
A couple of suggestions for the wheels. The tubes seem to work best when inflated to about 9". They don't deform and stay firm.

1) I suggest cutting an inch off the width of the cardboard tubes. The tubes don't seal against the rims if they are only inflated to 9".
2) Cut a slot in the cardboard tube for the valve stem.
3) Get a valve stem extension. It makes it MUCH easier to fill the tubes.

More to come.

Painted the tail feathers, installed the elevator, elevator servo and push rods.
Paint on rudder is drying. Rudder install is next with a pull-pull servo.
Finished the tail struts. I used 1/2" stramlined bass wood for the struts.

Progress has been slow. Too many other projects. Mounted the rudder. Will post some pictures soon of the fuse. Just about ready to mount the engine.
Got started on the wings. Cut out the ailerons. Lined the aileraon cutout and leading edgo of aileron with 3/16 x 3/8 and 3/16 x 1/4. Glued 1/4" dowel on the wing leading edge. Added 1/2" tubes for servo wires and glued flat part of ribs to wing. Used 1/4 x 1/16' on the aileron trailing edge. Will do the sa,e to the wing when it is done. More to come.

jsilver & Greg - I recently saw that Dubro is making 7" and 8" wheels to be used with a 1/4" axle. Could these be used on the Mud Duck?

You can use any wheel. In my opinion, the inner tube style wheels are more appropriate. They are part of the Mud Duck charm.

Made progress on the wings. will post some pictures soon.

Sure, you could use them, but at $30+ (7") and $40+ (8") EACHhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...spinnyeyes.gif, and over 20 oz (1.25#) each,I would like to point out mine are much cheaper (~$20) and much lighter. They are a good choice for a scale application but why bother on a Duck?

You would have to change the axle, either add 1/4" steel axles to the 1/2" dowel axle, or go entirely with a 1/4" steel axle (if you wanted to keep the functional bungee suspension), because a 1/4" dowel would likely snap quite often.

I share the same opinion... A duck with out the innertube wheels just doesn't "look right"... but I respect individuality and encourage everyone to build their Duck the way they want and will enjoy it the most.

Looking forward to the new photos.

jsilvers & greg - I agree, the "Mud Duck Look" would not be the same. I was aware of their cost, but didn't realize they weighed so much. Won't be using those any time soon!

Thanks, Ron

Wings just about complete. Install ailerons, aileron servo and linkage next.

Haven't done much lately - TOO HOT.

Built the wing struts. Fitted the wing to the fuse. Installed aileron servos in wings.
Next will paint ailerons and install and mount motor.

Unfortunately to the RC Community and more, our dear friend Joel has recently passed away. Hopefully we will be able to find a good home for his collection, the mud duck is an interesting and cool airplane
