Jig to keep ribs square
 

I have seen these plastic jigs that hold ribs square while the gule dries, but I can no longer find them on line (Tower, etc.) If anyone knows what I am talking about, can you please point me in the right direction?

I think you are looking for the House of Balsa "Up Right". I just checked their website and they list for $1.49. I have 3 of them because at any time I might find one too work with.

Thin CA glue and a plastic square has always worked for me. After all the rib's are set Ifollow up with a medium thickness CA to make sure the strength is there. I'll use Titebond wood glue and lots of pins, weights and tape to glue the sheeting on. When joining the panels it's always 30 minute epoxy on all surfaces to be glues together.

Been building this way for many years and it has worked without failure.

Imade my own jigs.Go to Lowes and by 90° extruded aluminum. Cut them into 1" sections. Use a bandsaw, hacksaw, or chop saw to cut them. You can drill a small hole in them to put pins in to secure them in place. Them simply place the piece next to the rib, pin it in place, and put a small clamp on it to hold the rib securely to the aluminum piece. For less than $10 Imade about 50 or so, as best as I can remember

The ones Iuse have been converted for a magnetic building board, so you can see the magnet on the bottom of them. But you get the idea from the picture

I too have those orange ones they sell, but my problem with them is that the ribs (pending size of wing)are sometimes too tall to allow the jig to sit on the building surface. I did make some taller ones, but when I'm not using ca glue, I use my aluminum ones I made. I did just as RC Ken has done. Allows me to pin things down tightly while glue dries. At times, ca glue fumes mess me up & thats when I'll use slower alpa-glue for a build. Bill

For those on the cheap, I'm in the prossess of building the herr p-51 and was looking for something to use. I just grabbed a box of 3/4 plated coarse nuts which are square, heavy and sit on the build board.
I suppose if your building a bigger plane, you just get bigger nuts. LOL.

(Ps: I'm new at building and flying and to fly a large plane would take bigger nuts!)

music CD cases are also nice and square
cut them carefully with a hacksaw or slow jigsaw then stick onto a base

I use my socket sets. One on each side.
