This kit continues to both impress and disappoint. I've been fitting the wing to the fuse, and the first thing I noticed was the excellent fit in the saddle. The only gap is a small one on the right side at the leading edge, and that will be easy to correct using a bit of filler. Less impressive are the tapered balsa trailing edge root blocks, which are fit the to wing as it is sitting in the saddle, then glued to the wing trailing edge. The blocks themselves are too short, ie they are not as thick as the wing trailing edge itself. I opted to glue them down first, then build them up by fabricating a filler block from 1/8th balsa sheeting, and feather that to make it seamless. This whole structure winds up under the belly pan, so you'd never see the misfitting pieces, however because these blocks are the wing hold down mechanism and are right at the root, I wanted a smooth structure to glass over with no obvious stress raisers.

Wing mounting complete! Pretty self-descriptive actually. Also got the servo hatch covers glassed. Next stop: wing glassing!

I assume you also ran the cloth over the fiberglass wing tips - right?

RE: Yellow P-47 Build!!

Yeah, the cloth overlaps about 1/2 inch onto the tips.

RE: Yellow P-47 Build!!

Not sure if this build thread is still active or not, but I have a question that I was hoping someone could answer. I am in the process of mounting a DA-50 to my P-47 and I do not see anything in the instructions on adding right thrust when mounting the motor. It does not look as though any right thrust is built into the firewall. Is this something that should be built into this model or not?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I've set aside the P-47 project for the flying season, but it's about time to pick it back up again, so should have some updates for this thread soon.

As for the right thrust, I checked my firewall, and like yours, it seems square. I didn't include any right thrust in my mount, and as you know the instructions don't seem to call for any. However now that you pointed this out, if I were to do it again I would probably include 2 degrees just for good measure.

Regards,
George

RE: Yellow P-47 Build!!

George,

Thanks for responding. I thought it was unusual not to have some right thrust. It has been included in every other plane that I have built. I asked the same question on RC Scale Builder and one of the guys that has completed one indicated the he did not include it and his plane and does not think it is needed. I will probably call Yellow just to make sure.

I am looking forward to you picking up you build again so that I can follow along. It has been very helpful.

Thanks,

Mark

RE: Yellow P-47 Build!!

Hi again!

Long time without updates, but now the flying season is right and truly finished here in New Jersey, so it's back to the P-47 project! Today's update is on the lower gear doors. This is a fussy and difficult part of most builds, and the P-47 is no exception. The kit parts are nice, but require a lot of fabrication of the mounting hardware out of plywood. My only real complaint is that the wheel wells are slightly too large for the provided fiberglass gear door covers. This makes the fit and alighnment very critical. I might ring the door with a lip of 1/8" balsa to give the covers more purchase when closed.

Regular updates should be forthcoming now!

-George
