Yes, doped silk is fine too. My dad would be proud :D There is only one product that you should stay away from (for this type of structure) and that is 21st Century iron-on fabric. When writing the instructions, I guess it was just easier to say "no fabric" - sorry for the confusion.

My local hobby shop recommended an Ernst mount instead. Any recommendations? It looks like the web on the Sig mount will interfere with the throttle arm. Joe Use the aluminum mount. You are going to fly 3D with this model are you? Plus, you said you would have to move the Saito out on a mount in order to get it to balance. Using the aluminum mount eliminates this concern. Worry about weight on 3D or competition models. Don't waste the effort worrying about such things on sport models. This hobby can be fun if you don't obsess on weight for common sport models. I haven't built my V60 yet so can't offer specifics but I have tried the nylon bolt to mount LG and threw in the towel. Doesn't take much of a bump to shear them clean off and I was becoming skilled at cutting a groove or drilling a hole and using a flat blade screwdriver or forcing an allen wrench in the hole to back the resulting studs out. (10-24). Not sure 1/4-20 would do much better either. Personally, I suggest T-nuts and allen-head cap screws. Regards, Clay |

If you cannot seem to be able to cover with Monokote, try Ultracote from Horizon Hobby instead. It goes on much easier.

If one started out using Super Monokote in the Seventies and stayed with it as it evolved over time, then it isn't that bad to use. Just starting out with it can be tough. I like the Oracover derivatives except that their colors aren't as deep and sharp looking as those used by Monokote. I really like the transparent colors of Oracover/Ultracote.

I find said black bolts at Ace Hardware.
And memories of the old days back when men were men and MoneyCoat was thick and stiff. ;-) Used to apply the original MoneyCoat with the wife's steam iron. Got some nice burns that way. On me I mean. But steaming will really shrink the old MC. Tom |

Perhaps moving up to 1/4" bolts would have helped with the shearing. I was concerned that if it didn't work out using 1/4" metal bolts would be much too heavy. Guys at the field were interested in it and after reading about it thought the nylon bolt deal sounded like a good idea; especially for training and trainers. All it did was train us in the resulting nylon stud removal after anything less than greasing one in. Truly I believe the problem was the shear strength, not the tension strength of the nylon. Here's an old LT-40 ARF that was converted to tail dragger. It has four bolts instead of two because that was the way the Super Stick 60 gear was drilled from the beginning.

to all of you talking about nylon bolts for the landing gearthis planes lands so easy you really have to be asleep at the tx to land hard plus the two piece gear is hard on the bolts afriend did it but it likes to shear bolt to early it land better with the wings shortend
have flown them both ways full wings will float right by you on landing-shortend wing by 1 bay was a great mod. highly recommended love mine as a every day flier-have pictures in my profile |

Like the previous post said - I don't think the two piece gear and Nylon bolts would be the most successful thing one did. If you are going to use nylon bolts for break away gear, then you will have to toss the cheapo two piece gear.
I like the gear breaking away instead of tearing out the bottom of the fuselage on a chuck hole. To be honest, the nylon bolts on the LT-40 have never broken away. That landing gear used to be on a Big Stick 60 and they never broke away on that plane either. The plane got shot down by someone turning their transmitter on. I also have had several Ultra Stick 40's and the nylon bolts never broke away on them either. I guess I never hit a chuck hole? The planes just got old and fuel soaked and I gave them away. |

I, on one hand, agree with w8ye concerning two piece landing gear. There are to many el cheapo planes sold with cheap two piece landing gear. In addition, they generally have weak mounting points. However, there are many planes that use two piece landing gear successfully. These will have two attributes. First, the fuse mounting point is strong. Second, the landing gear material is designed sufficiently strong. I believe that for this discussion the Venture 60 will fall into the later category:)

I had some problems with the two-piece gear on rough fields, too, so I switched to a 4-star 60 one-piece gear. That's been fine, because it has more give than the original gear, but it's just a little weak for a plane this size. Next year I may try Goldberg's composite gear, which has worked well for me on other planes.

I think part of the reason for the two piece gear is because it is swept back, and you could use the same fixture in a press to punch the left and right side, and know they are exactly the same size. Also, when setting up a press to bend the gear pieces you could use the same set-up for left and right bending. If it is a job shop doing the work, the set-up time and cost for fixture work is significantly reduced.
