KW Flying Dutchmen 36th Annual Scale Rally
Whew!
Excellent weekend! I can't begine to describe this event, it just keeps getting better.
I arrived Friday afternoon and set up camp to the sound of 5-6 aircraft limbering up for the big weekend. Beautiful view from the hill as I was setting up, I remembered all my flying and camping equipment but the camera case I packed was empty. []
No harm, I noticed pictures showing up on their website: [link=http://www.kwflyingdutchmen.com/scalerally/]KW 2005 Photos[/link]
I was very impressed with the size, quality and performance of the electric aircraft I saw, electrics have definitely arrived.
Very friendly environment, the campsite was as alive and buzzing as the flightline, especially after hours....
The night show .... well, I'm simply going to have to stop saying it can't get any better because it gets better every year. Scott and Rob's heli demos were amazing, the electric night flying too (what was his name? Devon McGrath?. Sorry the pa was a bit muddled from my vantage point).
The noon show (actually starts at 1pm) was superb, and went off without a hitch. I almost missed out participating due to engine problems but several modellers helped me solve the problem in time to make my cue.... true modeller behavior exhibited by all, special thanks to Pete Sturgess, Hank Uroda, Al Horner, Walter Ernstberger & Ted Leblanc for helping a fellow modeller in need.

The KW rally lots like a lot of fun, congrats to them.
I see in the photos quite a few RV's parked.
In our neck of the woods, in the last few years we are noticing more flyers arriving earlier in the week, camping at the field and making a mini fly-in vacation out of the event. One field has a dedicated camping area with RV plugs. RV& RC a growing combination.

Well, the morning dew soaked my feet on the way to the flightline for an early morning (electric) flight.
But no, no aircraft wound up in the pond to the North.
Actually, for such a large, multi-day event, I only recall one (non combat) crash.... and a couple hard landings.[8D]

Was it an actual judged event or one in which your plane had to be some form of a scale subject?

Yes, scale subjects (or reasonable facsimile) only for the regular portion of the show, there was some featured heli 3d etc during the noon show.
This is a pretty laid back, yet well organised, very social event with a long history. Pretty well a tradition at 36 years running. Amazing that they seem to always get the weather right too. Sunny and hovering around 30c with light steady winds mostly down the runways all weekend.[8D]

You missed my crash ...
You missed my crash ...
Wouldn't have heard it, I'm told my snoring can drown out anything, especially with a few beverages in me.... glad to hear your beverage was unharmed though.
You missed some entertainment by the fire, someone was doing a credible Foster Brooks impression ... without acting. He passed out before you got there.[8D]
Oh, and I christened 'Angus' with a new first name ... 'Cunnell'.

RE: KW Flying Dutchmen 36th Annual Scale Rally
Hi,
We are in the process of setting up this event for this year and came across this thread. Thanks for the kind words.
The event is meant for fun, no competition, just a bunch of modellers getting together to have a great time and show off their scale, semi scale and stand off scale aircraft.
This year we expect campers and trailers to start arriving about Wednesday, and we will set up a float fly before the weekend if there is enough people.
Friday evening will be the wine and cheese and corn boil. Saturday noon will be the flying demonstration show with the candy drop for the kids. This year we will be having a pig roast on Saturday evening, advance ticket sales form will be available at our web site at www.kwflyingdutchmen.com for those who would like to order, Followed by the Saturday evening night flying display.
I hope to get a chance to see old friends again and to meet new friends.
