Hi there,
Just rejoined MAAC after 5 years or so out of the hobby. Anyone else in MAAC not part of a club but that still flies? Unfortunately the closest club to me is about 5 hours away in Grande Prairie, AB. I would love to make it down to their flying event in May or June. That's when I believe it takes place.

Hey Drew,
I now live in Airdrie and have the choice of a couple of clubs, but I used to live in Leduc then Edmonton and flew at the old Sunset R/C field out by Millet. No club there, just a flying site open to anyone who could follow a few basic rules. What are you wondering about? Just looking for kindred spirits?

Well it would be nice to have a flying field nearer to me but I don't think that'll happen anytime soon. The guys up here just go out flying near a farm or sometimes on the side roads because it's such a low population area and a lot of open fields.
I would however like to get down to some of the events happening at the Slave Lake Club or Grande Prairie, Etc... Maybe at some point I can go see the fun fly in Edmonton or something.

Hey Drew,
If you want a real R/C field and the social aspect of it, why don't you start one yourself? Someone has to do it...
Given the amount of unused land you have (I've been to High Level, there is certainly lots of open space), it should be no problem to find a landowner who will let you use a corner of a field for next to nothing. You don't have to be fancy with it, just get a semi-smooth grass surface in place and see if you can find a few like minded folks to split the mowing duties with. I've been involved with a couple of start up clubs and the biggest problem we had was noise complaints with the neighbors at one and finding a farmer who would let us use a corner of his field for a site at the other. You should be able to solve both of those and the rest is just putting up a few posters around town and attracting a bit of interest. You might be surprised who pops out of the woodwork once the ball starts rolling.

Maybe down the road I'll do that. My boss would love that. I'm in radio and there's nothing bosses like more then to see their announcers get out and get into the community.
But for now I'm going to hold off. I'm going to give it a couple years before I do anything like that. I just moved to High Level, got a woman to marry and a child to be born this year. Life is a little too hectic to take on something else now.
By the way, if you're ever up this way, look me up. Maybe we could get out flying.

You never know. My work is likely changing in the next few months and the new stuff may take me up that way some day. I'll keep that in mind if it looks like I will be in your area. Thanks for the invite, Drew.

Been there, done that. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, nothing nearer then about 5 hours away.
