In the time in which I have been ACC Rep -coming up to three years now. The subject of fees has not come up at all except in respect of the overall reduction caused by the cutting of the ACC budget in response to the revision of the FAI national fee structure.

Before that, Richard is your best source, but I recall that at the time of the last revision a new formula was proposed which was not unfavourable to MAAC.

I have no idea where the $40K came from. The total ACC budget is around that! Somebody likes to write pure fiction. And certainly somebody enjoys spreading absolute nonsense.
My apologies if I've mixed up the numbers with that "past ACC" disucussion. Regardless, I'm now very interested in checking back in my email bank to find out where that memory came from. If my brain is fogging or if I have a crappy source, I'd like to know. [>:]

I guess I'd better hunt down copies of the ACC minutes to satisfy my own curiosity.

..........man, are we off in all directions on this one!

True but if you listened to a word I've been saying, one of my repeated assertions is that there is a vast, untapped market segment that maac doesn't appeal to. My business may not have the same dynamics as Scotiabank, but I kinda doubt maac does either.
I truly believe MAAC has less than 10% of Canadian flyers in it's membership, and that there is a distinct possibility that MAAC wil suffer a membership crisis as the respected elder modelers age. You can take this as an attack (as you have done) but I would hope that you see that these issues cocern me because I truly care about the future of R/C flying. I think that the best thing that could happen to our hobby would be for it to become mainstream. Imagine if we had the fan base of this stange hobby called "golf" how many flying sites we could choose from. Heck we could even have caddies...hot ones....no wait that's going too far....but seriously, I think that kind of growth is possible in our hobby. There is, however upheaval and change in any revolution.... [8D]

Based on what?
Most of the retailers I have dealt with in Canada palace the figure closer to 40% to 50% are MAAC members, although I know the assocation thinks closer to 80% ... optimistically.
MAAC sees about 2,000 new members each year ... over 50,000 have joined the association since I first joined. The first issue to address is better retention for long term mebmbers ... new members that leave are an expensive member to have. (In magazine sales, subscription sales typically don't break even until the third year)

And likely never will. It's not sound economics to try to appeal to all consumers, you must choose your demographic wisely.

It's those kind of statements you have to back up with some facts before you will have any credibility. I live in one of the most populace areas in Canada and am very active in the modelling community. There are very few hobby shops in Southern Ontario that aren't on my speed dial and won't open the door after hours if I call. Given that background, I simply don't see anything supporting your claims....

Wrong again, the only attack I've seen is your characterization of those who have already tested some of your ideas....

Nice fantasy. I'm more of a technical person than a visionary so, that may be at the root of our inability to communicate, you strike me as more of an artsy type and I've never had much success in communicating with that particular demographic. I'm afraid I have little faith of ever seeing the day where RC challenged golf, I just think it takes a rather peculiar personality mix to create a dedicated modeller....:D

I am glad that you're concerned though....please feel free to try to make you fantasy a reality, I certainly won't stand in your way... unless your efforts begine to detrimentally impact the hobby I enjoy in my reality.;)

80% may have been an accurate figure 25 years ago, I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that this is the case today....that said, the 10% comment is not realistic either......

I don't know what you are talking about. I have never sided with the ACC against MAAC. Somebody has been feeding you outright lies. But remember that 75% of the ACC membership are MAAC members. If we demonize the ACC, we are demonizing ourselves.

The ACC is nothing more or less than an association of Canadian aerosport groups. It performs a function that assists us and others. The people involved are almost all volunteers.

As you can't substantiate it, I would appreciate it if you would withdraw your accusation.

Frankly don't believe anything Ken Kalynuk or Marc Sharpe say about the Aero Club. They only provide misinformation. Ken has an axe to grind - he does not believe MAAC should be involved in international competition and opposes any link with the FAI.

Quite Frankly Mr. Larkin, you can go to hell. [:@] I haven't put anything down here about You or about the Aero Club that warrants a blanket attack like that. You have a beef with Ken, deal with it. Your credibility has taken a big hit with Mr Lebel's post on the other thread and I notice you haven't bothered to respond to that. Nor, have you responded to a ligitimate debate issue I posed on that thread, instead deciding to go for a personal offensive because you don't like the line of questioning? It's cowardly.

Let me tell you another thing, I will track down the minutes of the ACC meeting a couple years back when you were in attendance with then President Bransfield and I will at first opportunity speak directly to Mr Bransfield and I will find out the facts of any motion that had MAAC paying anything more than the established formula and where you stood on any such motion. Furthermore, I will be more than happy to post those findings and retract anything that I have said that contradicts anything I have posted.

Your ongoing judgemental attitude toward many people you have decided were not "up to the job" is quite revealing.

Merry Christmas.

XO

more typical spin!

I fully support all competition in maac, should we be funding 50% of the ACC budget at MAAC expense for 200 or so FAI MAAC competitors.

There are no axes to grind, we are trying to debate the point of views that has been put on the web on the Rick Rick - ACC - Dave Larkin era in MAAC.

As more of the former board members come on line, like Louis Lebel, all of the information will be presented and current maac members can judged for themselves whether the action taken by Mr. Larkin outside the board and undermine the maac president Rick Reid were in the best interests of maac or done for the best interest of the Aero Club of Canada or both! Time will tell.

I donot support personal attacks on the web, most of us here are debating current and past issues on maac.

RE: Ex-Prez sighting

By all means track down the ACC minutes. I was there. As I've said before, the suggestion that MAAC should be expected to pay $40K in fees is ridiculous as the ACC total budget is usually in the $40-45K range.

The reason I haven't responded to Louis' post is because I haven't seen it. But remember - I proposed Louis for the MAAC Executive. Subsequently I regretted this as during the ACC crisis, he absolutely refused to take any constructive part saying that he would wait and see how it turned out.

Any time I have provided you with information, and accurate information, you have always rejected it. Usually the response has been "That's not what I want to hear" or "That's not what my people want to hear". You have frequently been insulting to me in correspondence, implying that because I am older than you I'm not relevant. I keep my email files too.

Meaning... anyone not supporting a particular view is automatically suspect and subject to personal attacks.

The simple fact is, those who were there know what what they witnessed formed their own opinions based on that aspect. The rest of us will likely never know. It's very silly to debate it now, you can't change the past, only opinion of what may or may not have happened depending who you believe (or maybe want to believe). I have to ask .... To what end? What are we hoping to accomplish here? Is it even possible. It sounds like a house very divided at the time, how are we to expect regurgitating this after all these years (ad failing memory) is going to benefit anyone?

That is a fairly wild stretch. [sm=thumbdown.gif]

Aside from that, at least the posts from RB & DL can actually be read -- there is no confusion (intended or otherwise) about what they are saying.

I am still intrigued by Cessna206a's comment in response to the first quote - an ambiguous and indefinite insinuation that presumably has some dubious meaning -in his mind, anyway.

Richard Barlow may well have been the SAA at that meeting, as he has been at many previous AGM's, and I've never heard any complaint about his handling of same

Does 'Cessna' have a problem with that? Sir, if you have something to say .. say it.

What does it have to do with the subject of "Ex-Prez sighting" anyway ?

Two fair statements.

Dave Larkin and I were both at the '96 Agm, and yes, we are in basic agreement. There are never any absolutes. Both sides of the issue had their points of view. Rick Reid likely felt that his course of action was the right one. I do not doubt that for one second. Others amongst us felt equally strongly that breaching the constitution and bylaws of MAAC is no way to solve problems. Our hobby tends to inflame strong passions because all of us love what we are doing, and none of us wants our particular interests threatened.
Let it suffice to say that, as most of our modellers are RC sport flyers, the primary duty of the MAAC Board is to provide insurance, protect frequencies, investigate new technolgies that affect RC, fight for the retention of flying fields and keep our members in touch with one another via our magazine. All that is a given. That said, MAAC was founded by, and for, competition flyers who wanted the right to represent Canada in World Championship competition. This was the founding principle of MAAC. I will never stand by and watch that right compromised, any more than I would watch our frequencies invaded, despite my primary interest being free flight.

'96 was the mother of all AGMs. Regardless of which side one supported, the nasty taste in the mouth remained. Let us finally forget that fight and move on. Our insurance is solid, our frequencies are safe, our fields (I hope) are secure, our position with ACC is favourable to us, and radios are cheaper and better than ever. ARF's are a quantum leap ahead of the old ones and good balsa is available. Heck, I even have a reasonable supply of pink Jap tissue.

I hope that 2006 brings a peaceful and cooperative sprit to MAAC. There is no reason for the fighting. A hundred years from now it will all seem pretty stupid.

Politically correct or not, I wish everyone a happy and blessed Christmas. The true spirit of this season arrived in the form of my most treasured Christmas greeting. It was a proper Christmas card from a Jewish modeller in Israel, who is my friend.

That says it all.

Richard Barlow
